We aimed to characterize cortical superficial siderosis, its determinants and sequel, in community-dwelling older adults.
The sample consisted of Framingham (
= 1724; 2000-2009) and Rotterdam (
= 4325; 2005-2013) study participants who underwent brain MRI. In pooled individual-level analysis, we compared baseline characteristics in patients with cortical superficial siderosis to two reference groups (i) persons without hemorrhagic MRI markers of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (no cortical superficial siderosis and no microbleeds) and (ii) those with presumed cerebral amyloid angiopathy based on the presence of strictly lobar microbleeds but without cortical superficial siderosis.
Among a total of 6049 participants, 4846 did not have any microbleeds or cortical superficial siderosis (80%), 401 had deep/mixed microbleeds (6.6%), 776 had strictly lobar microbleeds without cortical superficial siderosis (12.8%) and 26 had cortical superficial siderosis with/without microbleeds (0.43%). In comparison to partical superficial siderosis may be at high risk for intracerebral hemorrhage and future neurological events.
Our study adds supporting evidence to the association between cortical superficial siderosis and cerebral amyloid angiopathy within the general population. Community-dwelling persons with cortical superficial siderosis may be at high risk for intracerebral hemorrhage and future neurological events.
We examined factors influencing anemia outcomes in rural children following implementation of a prevention program.
Mixed methods study of children, parents, and clinicians utilized statistical modeling and content/ethnographic analysis. Retrospective chart abstraction evaluated treatments administered and measured hemoglobin in children aged 6 to 59 months (
= 161). Prospective interviews/questionnaires examined parent (
= 51) and clinician (
= 19) perceptions.
Anemia prevalence decreased by 21.2%. GSK621 Predictors of increased hemoglobin were clinic visit number and age at first visit. Once anemia improved, children were likely to remain improved (
= .65). Despite favorable program perceptions, stakeholders emphasized ecological barriers, including social disadvantage and local practices.
Socioeconomic factors prevented guideline concordant behaviors. Persistent attention to intrapersonal, interpersonal, and community social determinants is a sine qua non for successfully managing the epidemic. The first step to provide culturally congruent care is to explicitly acknowledge that guideline-concordant behaviors are often complex.

Bivariate correlation analyses were performed to assess the association between age, sexual conservatism, sexual satisfaction, and sexual function. Mediation analysis with bootstrap samples was performed to test the mediating effect of sexual conservatism. Results Findings suggest a mediating effect of conservative sexual beliefs on the relationship between age and sexual satisfaction in a community-based sample of older women (F(3,102) = 9.31, p less then .001, R2 = .215).Conclusions The negative association between sexual conservatism and sexual satisfaction of the participants, and the non-significance of the direct effect of age in sexual satisfaction when including sexual conservatism in the mediation model, highlight the relevance of cognitive factors in sexual health in later life.Clinical Implications Results such as the mediating role of sexual conservatism on the relationship between age and sexual satisfaction provide opportunities for developing and testing sexual health programs based on the demystification of sexual beliefs. Objectives Ischemic stroke (IS) is often associated with long-lasting physical deficits, linked to emotional symptoms (ES) and lowered quality of life (QoL). However, recent observations raised doubts regarding the traditional perspective of solely impairment-driven ES. In fact, anxiety and depression were also reported after transient ischemic attack (TIA) with a per definition absence of infarction and thus lacking physical deficits. This study follows the hypothesis that TIA patients might exhibit non-physical symptoms affecting individual QoL.Methods In a prospective single-center observational study, IS patients (n = 73) were compared with TIA patients (n = 24) regarding their neurological deficit, ES and QoL, whereas the latter were evaluated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Short Form 36 Heath Survey (SF-36). Assessments were conducted six times within a one-year follow-up period. Results Overall, anxiety and depression decreased over time, while anxiety decreased more substantially. TIA patients showed similar levels of anxiety and depression when compared to IS patients. ES were detectable very early after the event and remained throughout the follow-up period in both groups. ES were associated with an impaired QoL including non-functional dimensions, while the strongest interrelations were observed for TIA patients, emphasizing interrelations between QoL and anxiety.Discussion This study indicates that ES after TIA are comparable to the emotional burden after IS. ES after TIA were associated with QoL, pointing out their crucial role for individual well-being. Although confirmation in larger studies is necessary, these data underpin the need for early clinical awareness regarding non-physical symptoms in TIA patients.Collaborative partnerships are a useful approach to improve health conditions of disadvantaged populations. The Ventanillas de Salud (VDS) ("Health Windows") and Mobile Health Units (MHUs) are a collaborative initiative of the Mexican government and US public health organizations that use mechanisms such as health fairs and mobile clinics to provide health information, screenings, preventive measures (eg, vaccines), and health services to Mexican people, other Hispanic people, and underserved populations (eg, American Indian/Alaska Native people, geographically isolated people, uninsured people) across the United States. From 2013 through 2019, the VDS served 10.5 million people (an average of 1.5 million people per year) at Mexican consulates in the United States, and MHUs served 115 461 people from 2016 through 2019. We describe 3 community outreach projects and their impact on improving the health of Hispanic people in the United States. The first project is an ongoing collaboration between VDS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to address occupational health inequities among Hispanic people.
