pulations.This article summarizes the vaping research literature as it pertains to tobacco quitlines and describes vaping assessment, treatment, and evaluation quitline practices. It also presents 2014-2018 registration data (vaping in the past 30 days, number of use days, use for quitting smoking, and intentions to quit vaping) from 24 public quitlines (23 states and District of Columbia) and 110,295 enrollees to employer-sponsored quitlines. Trends in vaping rates over time, by state, and by age group are described. Approximately 57,000 adult public quitline enrollees in the U.S. reported vaping at registration in 2018 (14.7% of enrollees). Most quitline participants who vape also smoke cigarettes and contact the quitline for smoking cessation support. Rates of reporting vaping and no combustible or smokeless tobacco use in the past 30 days are 0.5% of all public quitline participants ( less then 3% of public quitline vaping product users). Data are not systematically available regarding the number of quitline participants who are seeking help quitting vaping and only vape (do not use combustible or smokeless tobacco). Few quitline participants ( less then 1%) are youth aged less then 18 years, but more than a third (35%) report vaping. Although 72% of Internet users have searched for health information, online quitline registration is not universally available. In 2014, QUITPLAN Services (Minnesota's quitline) added options (Individual Services 2-week nicotine-replacement therapy starter kit, text messaging, e-mail messaging, quit guide) to the existing Helpline (telephone counseling, nicotine-replacement therapy, integrated e-mails and texts, quit guide) and online registration for all programs. Demographic and quit outcome differences by registration mode (online versus telephone) and program type (Individual Services versus Helpline) were examined.
A total of 4 years (March 2014-February 2018) of participants' registration and utilization data (N=55,817) were examined. Data were also studied from subsets of participants who completed the outcome evaluations conducted in 2014 (n=1,127) and 2017 (n=872). Select demographic and program use characteristics and quit outcomes were analyzed by registration method and stratified by program toreover, abstinence rates do not differ. Online registration may be particularly appropriate for nontelephone quitline services. Quitlines may wish to add online registration to capitalize on Internet use.
About 80% of the 1.1 billion people who smoke tobacco worldwide reside in low- and middle-income countries. Evidence-based approaches to promote cessation include brief advice from health professionals and referrals through quitlines. This study assesses cessation behaviors and the use of cessation services in the past 12 months among current tobacco smokers in 31 countries who attempted to quit.
Data came from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey, a household-based survey of non-institutionalized adults aged ≥15 years. Surveys were conducted in 31 countries during 2008-2018; sample sizes ranged from 4,250 (Malaysia) to 74,037 (India), and response rates ranged from 64.4% (Ukraine) to 98.5% (Qatar). In 2019, data from the 31 countries were assessed in June 2019, and indicators included self-reported current (daily or less than daily) tobacco smoking, past-year quit attempts, and cessation methods used in the past 12 months.
Current tobacco smoking prevalence ranged from 3.7% (Ethiopia) to 38.2% (Greece). Oveple quit smoking as part of a comprehensive approach.
Increasing the reach of evidence-based cessation services is a longstanding public health priority, especially for subgroups who may be most at risk. Little research has examined whether quitlines are reaching menthol cigarette smokers who may have increased difficulty quitting compared with nonmenthol cigarette smokers. This study aims to understand whether quitline services are reaching menthol cigarette smokers.
The study sample included adult smokers enrolled in Minnesota's quitline program, QUITPLAN Services, between May 2017 and April 2018 (N=10,999). Cigarette smokers were asked about the usual cigarette type (menthol versus nonmenthol). Reach ratios were calculated by dividing the percentage of program enrollees who are menthol smokers by the percentage of Minnesota smokers who are menthol smokers. Differences in demographic, tobacco use, and utilization characteristics between menthol and nonmenthol smokers were assessed using chi-square and t-tests. Analyses were conducted in March 2019.
Among QUITPLAN Services enrollees, 30.7% of smokers reported using menthol cigarettes. The reach ratio was 1.12 (95% CI=0.99, 1.25). Menthol smokers were more likely to be younger, be female, be Black/African American, be Hispanic, and live in an urban area than nonmenthol smokers. Although menthol smokers were more likely than nonmenthol smokers to enroll in text messaging, no other significant differences in service utilization were found.
The findings suggest that menthol smokers are proportionately represented among quitline enrollees. State quitlines should assess menthol smoking status at intake and allocate resources to reach and better serve menthol smokers.

Patients who use tobacco are too rarely connected with tobacco use treatment during healthcare visits. Electronic health record enhancements may increase such referrals in primary care settings. This project used the Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance framework to assess the implementation of a healthcare system change carried out in an externally valid manner (executed by the healthcare system).
The healthcare system used their standard, computer-based training approach to implement the electronic health record and clinic workflow changes for electronic referral in 30 primary care clinics that previously used faxed quitline referral. Electronic health record data captured rates of assessment of readiness to quit and quitline referral 4 months before implementation and 8 months (May-December 2017) after implementation. Data, analyzed from October 2018 to June 2019, also reflected intervention reach, adoption, and maintenance.
For reach and effectiveness, from before to after implementation for electronic referral, among adult patients who smoked, assessment of readiness to quit increased from 24.
