With the industrial development and progressive increase in environmental pollution, the mankind overexposure to heavy metals emerges as a pressing public health issue. buy SBI-0206965 Excessive intake of heavy metals, such as arsenic (As), manganese (Mn), mercury (Hg), aluminium (Al), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), bismuth (Bi), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe), is neurotoxic and it promotes neurodegeneration. Astrocytes are primary homeostatic cells in the central nervous system. They protect neurons against all types of insults, in particular by accumulating heavy metals. However, this makes astrocytes the main target for heavy metals neurotoxicity. Intake of heavy metals affects astroglial homeostatic and neuroprotective cascades including glutamate/GABA-glutamine shuttle, antioxidative machinery and energy metabolism. Deficits in these astroglial pathways facilitate or even instigate neurodegeneration. In this review, we provide a concise outlook on heavy metal-induced astrogliopathies and their association with major neurodegenerative disorders. In particular, we focus on astroglial mechanisms of iron-induced neurotoxicity. Iron deposits in the brain are detected in main neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Accumulation of iron in the brain is associated with motor and cognitive impairments and iron-induced histopathological manifestations may be considered as the potential diagnostic biomarker of neurodegenerative diseases. Effective management of heavy metal neurotoxicity can be regarded as a potential strategy to prevent or retard neurodegenerative pathologies.Parathyroid hormone (PTH) determination is of greatest importance for patients suffering from parathyroid gland disorders and for the follow-up of bone turnover in patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD). Two generations of PTH assays are simultaneously present on the market for PTH quantification. As these assays are not yet standardized, this results in a significant level of confusion in the care of CKD patients. One key objective of the IFCC Committee for Bone Metabolism is to improve this situation. In this position paper, we will highlight the current state of PTH testing and propose a pathway to ultimately overcome issues resulting from PTH assay variability.Random fiber networks constitute the solid skeleton of many biological materials such as the cytoskeleton of cells and extracellular matrix of soft tissues. These random networks show unique mechanical properties such as nonlinear shear strain-stiffening and strain softening when subjected to preextension and precompression, respectively. In this study, we perform numerical simulations to characterize the influence of axial prestress on the nonlinear mechanical response of random network structures as a function of their micromechanical and geometrical properties. We build our numerical network models using the microstructure of disordered hexagonal lattices and quantify their nonlinear shear response as a function of uniaxial prestress strain. We consider three different material models for individual fibers and fully characterize their influence on the mechanical response of prestressed networks. Moreover, we investigate both the influence of geometric disorder keeping the network connectivity constant and the influence of the randomness in the stiffness of individual fibers keeping their mean stiffness constant. The effects of network connectivity and bending rigidity of fibers are also determined. Several important conclusions are made, including that the tensile and compressive prestress strains, respectively, increase and decrease the initial network shear stiffness but have no effect on the maximal shear modulus. We discuss the findings in terms of microstructural properties such as the local strain energy distribution.Temporary epicardial pacing wires are universally used in cardiac surgery and are associated with very low morbidity and mortality. Although rare, serious complications can occur with pacing wires. We present a case avulsion of a saphenous vein graft side branch caused by removal of pacing wires and leading to pericardial tamponade. Our case favors the use of silk ties rather than hemoclips for occlusion of saphenous vein side branches and illustrates the importance of the location of pacing wires relative to the grafts at the time of coronary artery bypass surgery.IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) was first identified as a systemic condition in 2003 when extra-pancreatic manifestations were identified in patients with autoimmune pancreatitis. Its peak incidence occurs in the fifth or sixth decades of life. Isolated extra-aortic mediastinal involvement is extremely rare. We report a case of isolated extra-aortic mediastinal IgG4-RD encasing the superior vena cava (SVC), manifesting as SVC syndrome in a 25-year-old man with no personal or family history of autoimmune disease. Resection with SVC reconstruction was performed. We report on a 3-year-old boy with supravalvular aortic stenosis after aortic switch operation in whom the stenosis was successfully repaired using ascending sliding arch aortoplasty without using a patch. As patches were avoided, the growth of the surgical site is expected. Ascending sliding arch aortoplasty and longitudinal expansion of the pulmonary bifurcation are useful for relieving stenosis and preventing supravalvular aortic stenosis recurrence after ASO.Pectus excavatum is the most common congenital anomaly of the chest wall. Surgical management of this problem has evolved to encompass many modifications of Dr. Ravitch's initial groundbreaking repair to include the insertion of mesh, metal struts and bars to bolster the repair through open and minimally invasive approaches. We present the first reported case of Right Ventricular Outflow Tract obstruction from a dislodged pectus bar following a modified Ravitch procedure. Herein, we describe the presentation, diagnosis, and management of this exceedingly rare complication and provide clinical pearls and inspiration for future research directions based on our unique experience.
