The biomechanical influence of brace treatment for scoliosis is not understood. This prospective pilot study analyzed reliability of a system based on 100% textile sensors for measurement of pressure exerted by brace on trunk. Evaluation of modifications during changes in the location of the support zones and variations in amplitude of the pressure was observed in four patients, when considering three main daily positions mimicking day and nighttime wear. A calibration step allowed the determination of a conversion law between sensor data and pressure unit using a second order polynomial function with a high r2 of 0.99. This prototype is the first of a new generation. Experimental pressure distribution could be useful for the further brace development.Optimal treatment for patients with ischemic heart disease and severe left ventricular dysfunction is a debatable subject in the literature. The largest and only trial on the subject so far is the Surgical Treatment for Ischemic Heart Failure trial. This trial compared coronary artery bypass grafting with optimal medical treatment in one arm versus coronary artery bypass grafting with surgical ventricular restoration in the second arm. Recently, the 10-year follow-up data of various subsets of the trial have been published. This study reviews various pertinent clinical issues related to the trial and its sub-studies and their relevance in routine modern-day clinical practice.
Given the lack of information on the psychological impact of COVID-19 on people aged ≥60, we aimed to describe their psychological responses to this pandemic and lockdown situation and compare them with those under 60 years of age.
Secondary analysis of a larger online cross-sectional study designed to determine the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown across Spain. We analyzed a total of 1690 respondents aged ≥60 years and compared them with 13,363 respondents under 60 years of age. We employed the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale and the Impact of Event Scale to evaluate psychological responses.
In all, 52.6% of women and 34.3% of men were found to be probable cases of any emotional distress (
< 0.001). In both sexes, the most common psychological response was avoidance behavior (34.7% and 23.8%, respectively), followed by depression (28.5 and 14.2%). Older women and men were considered probable cases of any emotional distress less often than younger ones (women 52.6% vighlight the need for expert guidance in this age group, especially older women living alone.The field of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming almost every aspect of modern society, including medical imaging. Finally, AI-based methods to automatically segment organs or detect and characterise pathology have been translated out of the research environment and into clinical practice to bring automation, increased sensitivity, and new clinical applications to patient care, ultimately increasing the benefit to the patient from medically justified CT examinations. In the study described here, a catalytic synthesis of α,α-dihalo-N-arylacetamides from β-oxo amides was developed using zwitterionic catalysts and N-halosuccinimides as the halogen sources. The corresponding α,α-dihalo-N-arylacetamides were obtained in good to excellent yields, and no aromatic halogenated side products were detected. The reaction conditions were mild, and no strong base or acid was required.
