Phosphorus (P) is a vital plant macronutrient required for plant growth which usually available in limited amount. P availability for plant uptake in highly weathered soil is controlled by soil erosion and high fixation. The availability of P applied from fertilizers depend on the soil pH, soil sorption capacity (PSC) and P saturation status (PSD), which determines P storage, losses, fixation, and additional P to be added with minimal loss to the environment. PSC and PSD are agro-environmental indicators used to estimate P availability and P loss to the environment. However, PSC and PSD of agricultural soils had been never studied in Tanzanian soils. This study was conducted to assess and estimate P availability, PSC and PSD and the risks of P losses in tropical soils from Usangu basin popular for paddy farming. In total, 198 soil samples from 10 paddy irrigation schemes were collected (November-December 2019) and analyzed for inherent P (PM3), metal oxides of Aluminium (Al M3), iron (Fe M3), and calcium (Ca M3) as main PSC and PSD determinant. The determined concentrations were in range of; P M3 014.9-974.69 mg/kg, Al M3 234.56-3789.36 mg/kg, Fe M3 456.78-2980.23 mg/kg, and Ca M3 234.67-973.34 mg/kg. Estimated PSCM3 ranged 5.62-34.85 mmol/kg with a mean value of 14.14 mmol/kg corresponding to high status, ensuring high P holding capacity for plant uptake. However, some soils had very low PSCM3 creating a risk of P loss to environment. Among soils, the estimated PSD M3 ranged from 0.01 to 17.57% and was below ( less then 24%), indicating low P loss risks to surface and groundwater, however, some soils were observed to have PSDM3 above 15% which correspond to a critical degree of phosphate saturation of 25% in a watershed using oxalate extraction method. Therefore some sites were associated with high P loss to the environment, immediate and precautionary actions for sustainable P management to increase productivity, environmental safety and sustainability are needed to be in place. The avoidance behavior is regarded as the method that provides first hand information about the behavior of an organism in the presence of contaminants in the soil. Very little data is found in literature regarding the effect of pesticides on tropical earthworms. Benzylamiloride cell line Two pesticides, acephate and atrazine which are widely used in Indian tropical area were investigated for their avoidance behavior on standard species, E. fetida (ISO 2007) and on a tropical species, M. posthuma. The avoidance tests are rarely replicated on tropical species, M. posthuma in comparison to standard species, E. fetida or E. andrei. The standard avoidance test (ISO 2007) was taken into consideration for two different species of earthworm. Significant difference in the distribution of earthworms in the control and test soils was found depicting that soil composition plays a vital role in affecting the distribution of worms. The results also show higher sensitivity of E. fetida in comparison to M. posthuma in terms of avoidance response for both the pesticides. For risk assessment, the soil types and indigenous soil species of earthworms must be taken into consideration for evaluation of soil contamination. Avoidance tests forms the basis to study the molecular mechanisms underlying the receptor proteins responsible for the process of chemesthesis in annelids. The large scale lignocellulosic biomass wastes could also be regarded as abundantly-available renewable resources, and how to convert them into value-added products via sustainable approaches is still a big challenge. In this work, we demonstrated a facile pyrolysis method to construct N, P-dually doped biochar materials from the lignocellulosic biomass wastes. The as-synthesized N, P-dually doped biochar samples could act as electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR/OER), showing excellent catalytic performance and long-term durability, as well as robust tolerance to CO and methanol. The unique hierarchical porous structure, favorable electronic structure modified by the N and P doping, as well as a variety of defect sites induced by the N and P doping into the carbon framework were identified as the main contributions to the prominent catalytic activity of the as-synthesized N, P-dually doped biochar materials. We expect this work would spur more efforts into developing advanced materials from the large scale lignocellulosic biomass wastes.Pesticides are chemical compounds widely used to combat pests in crops, and they thus play a key role in agricultural production. However, due to their persistence in aquatic environments, even at low concentrations, their use has been considered an environmental problem and caused concern regarding the adverse effects on human health. This paper reports, for the first time, the mechanisms, kinetics, and an evaluation of the toxicity of picloram degradation initiated by OH radicals in the aqueous environment using quantum chemistry and computational toxicology calculations. The rate constants are calculated using a combination of formulations derived from the Transition State Theory in a realistic temperature range (250-310 K). The results indicate that the two favorable pathways (R1 and R5) of OH -based reactions occur by addition to the pyridine ring. The calculated rate constant at 298 K is compared with the overall second-order reaction rate constant, quantified herein experimentally via the competition kinetics method and data available in the literature showing an excellent agreement. The toxicity assessment and a photolysis study provide important information i) picloram and the majority of degradation products are estimated as harmful; however, ii) these compounds can suffer photolysis in sunlight. The results of the present study can help understand the mechanism of picloram, also providing important clues regarding risk assessment in aquatic environments as well as novel experimental information.
Embolic stroke is a frequent complication of infective endocarditis yet lacks acute treatment as intravenous thrombolysis should be avoided due to high risk of intracerebral hemorrhage. Mechanical thrombectomy for large vessel occlusion may be a promising treatment but there is limited data on safety outcomes in infective endocarditis.
In this multi-center retrospective case series, we reviewed data from patients with infective endocarditis-related large vessel occlusion who underwent mechanical thrombectomy in 9 US hospitals.
We identified 15 patients at 9 hospitals. A minority presented with signs suggesting infection (2 patients (14%) had fever, 7 (47%) were tachycardic, 2 (13%) were hypotensive, and 8 (53%) had leukocytosis). The median National Institute of Health Stroke Score decreased from 19 (range 9-25) at presentation to 7 post-thrombectomy (range 0-22, median best score post-thrombectomy), and the median modified Rankin Scale on or after discharge for survivors was 3 (range 0-6). Approximately 57% of patients had a modified Rankin Scale between 0 and 3 on or after discharge.
