The cancer was treated with TPOG-RMS-LR protocol, with vincristine, actinomycin, and cyclophosphamide. Magnetic resonance imaging scan, performed about 3 years after the start of TPOG-RMS-LR therapy, revealed complete remission of the cancer.
Although treatment with cyclosporine cannot be conclusively implicated as the cause the rhabdomyosarcoma in this patient, the association should prompt consideration of its use in the treatment of frequently relapsing nephrotic syndrome in children.

A structural phenomenon seen in certain lineages of angiosperms that has captivated many scholars including Charles Darwin is the evolution of plant carnivory. Evidently, these structural features collectively termed carnivorous syndrome, evolved to aid nutritional acquisition from attracted, captured and digested prey. We now understand why plant carnivory evolved but how carnivorous plants acquired these attributes remains a mystery. In an attempt to understand the evolution of Nepenthes pitcher and to shed more light on its role in prey digestion, we analyzed the transcriptome data of the highly specialized Nepenthes khasiana leaf comprising the leaf base lamina, tendril and the different parts/zones of the pitcher tube viz. digestive zone, waxy zone and lid.
In total, we generated around 262 million high-quality Illumina reads. Reads were pooled, normalized and de novo assembled to generate a reference transcriptome of about 412,224 transcripts. We then estimated transcript abundance along the N. khaseaf development. Of particular interest, the expression of class III HOMEODOMAIN-LEUCINE ZIPPER (HD-ZIPIII) and ARGONAUTE (AGO) genes were upregulated in the tendril.
Our findings suggest that N. khasiana pitchers employ a wide range of enzymes for prey digestion and plant defense, harbor microbes and probably evolved through altered expression of leaf polarity genes.

Up to 70% of septic patients develop a diffuse brain dysfunction named "septic associated encephalopathy" which is often solely based on clinical impressions. However, the diagnosis of septic associated encephalopathy is outcome-relevant due to an increase in mortality in these patients. Neuroinflammation as well as a disturbance of cholinergic transmission are assumed to be the causes of both delirium and septic associated encephalopathy. An alteration in cholinergic activity can be objectified by measuring the erythrocytic acetylcholinesterase-activity. Single-point measurements of acetylcholinesterase-activity are of limited value because individual and dynamic changes over time have to be anticipated. Therefore, the hypothesis should be tested whether a longitudinal analysis of acetylcholinesterase-activity in critically ill patients can help to diagnose a suspected septic-associated encephalopathy and whether acetylcholinesterase-activity differs in comparison to non-septic patients.
In this prospectl measurement of acetylcholinesterase-activity over several consecutive days revealed a change from baseline only in septic patients with suspected septic-associated encephalopathy. Therefore, longitudinal measurement of acetylcholinesterase-activity is able to diagnose septic associated encephalopathy in septic patients with delirious symptoms.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a form of therapy for end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), and peritonitis is a known complication. Mycobacterium (M) species associated peritonitis in PD patients is uncommon. Our experience of managing PD associated peritonitis caused by M abscessus in a middle-aged man with ESKD due to focal segmental glomerulosclerosis is shared in this article with a review of the literature on this condition.
A 49-year old man presented to our unit with symptoms of peritonitis and cloudy PD effluent. Initial analysis of PD fluid showed Gram stain was negative, with no organism grown. Empirical PD peritonitis treatment with intra-peritoneal antibiotics did not improve his symptoms and he required intravenous antibiotics, PD catheter removal and a switch to haemodialysis. Cultures of the PD fluid later grew M abscessus, and the antibiotic regimen was changed appropriately, leading to clinical improvement.
M abscessus associated peritonitis in PD patients is rare. It needs to be borne in mind when clinical improvement is not seen with standard broad-spectrum antibiotics, especially in situations where the PD fluid is initially deemed to be culture negative. PD fluid samples should be sent for acid-fast bacillus and if detected, should be further analysed with genome-wide sequencing to confirm the species of the Mycobacterium. Prompt removal of the catheter with peritoneal washout is critical for clinical improvement.

Antibiotics have been used for decades against Cutibacterium acnes (previously known as Propionibacterium acnes; C. acnes). Alarmingly, antibiotic resistance to this bacterium has become a worldwide problem in recent years. No studies are available on the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of C. acnes among Jordanian acne patients and how that is influenced by antibiotic use. This study aims to assess antibiotic resistance patterns of C. acnes clinical isolates and neighboring Gram-positive normal flora of the skin obtained from acne patients attending dermatology clinics in Amman -Jordan appraising the role of antibiotic consumption.
This is a cross-sectional study of acne patients presenting to selected dermatology outpatient clinics over a 6-month study period. Swabs obtained from inflamed lesions were cultured aerobically and anaerobically. Isolates were identified and screened for antibiotic susceptibility. In addition, all patients were asked to fill in a questionnaire that included questions about the history of antibiotic treatment.
