Gsr-KO lungs exhibited downregulated cell cycle and DNA damage checkpoint genes at E19, as well as lung lipid metabolism and surfactant genes at PND5. In addition to abnormal baseline lung morphometry, Gsr-KO mice displayed a blunted response to hyperoxia. Hyperoxia caused a more robust upregulation of the lung thioredoxin system in Gsr-KO compared to Gsr-WT. Gsr-dependent, hyperoxia-responsive genes were highly associated with abnormal cytoskeleton, skeletal-muscular function, and tissue morphology at PND5. Overall, our data in Gsr-KO mice implicate the GSH system as a key regulator of lung development, cellular differentiation, and hyperoxic responses in neonatal mice.Cryptocaryon irritans is an obligate parasitic ciliate protozoan that can infect various commercially important mariculture teleosts and cause high lethality and economic loss, especially Larimichthys crocea. Current methods of controlling or preventing this parasite with chemicals or antibiotics are widely considered to be environmentally harmful. The antiparasitic activity of some antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) attracted extensive attention of scholars. In the study, a novel piscidin 5-like type 4 (termed Lc-P5L4) excavated from comparative transcriptome of C. this website irritans - immuned L. crocea was identified and characterized. Sequence analysis shows the full-length cDNA of Lc-P5L4 is 539 bp containing an open reading frame (ORF) of 198 bp which encodes a peptide of 65 amino acid residues. The genome consists of three exons and two introns which exist in its ORF, and all the exon-intron boundaries are in accordance with classical GT-AG rule (GT/intron/AG). Multiple alignments indicate the signal peptides share hithe immune defense against C. irritans infection, and provided another proof that piscidins exhibit multiple anti- C. irritans features.Abnormal B cells, which produce antibodies against self-antigens, play a key role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). B-cell activating factor (BAFF) is closely associated with abnormal B cells and participates in B cell-mediated autoimmune diseases; thus, neutralizing BAFF is an effective method for treating these diseases. Our group designed a novel fusion protein, BAFF-Trap, that contains the BAFF-binding domains of two BAFF receptors (TACI and BAFF-R) and the Fc domain of human IgG1. In this study, we showed that BAFF-Trap significantly decreased the autoantibody levels, BAFF concentrations and B cells numbers in MRL/lpr mice. BAFF-Trap suppressed the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the kidney and decreased the frequencies of T cell subsets and dendritic cells. Furthermore, BAFF-Trap reduced proteinuria and IgG deposition, relieved glomerular damage in the kidney, and markedly improved the survival rate of mice. These results indicated that BAFF-Trap may be a potential drug for the treatment of SLE.The neural control of behavior is distributed across many functionally and anatomically distinct brain regions even in small nervous systems. While classical neuroscience models treated these regions as a set of hierarchically isolated nodes, the brain comprises a recurrently interconnected network in which each region is intimately modulated by many others. Uncovering these interactions is now possible through experimental techniques that access large neural populations from many brain regions simultaneously. Harnessing these large-scale datasets, however, requires new theoretical approaches. Here, we review recent work to understand brain-wide interactions using multi-region 'network of networks' models and discuss how they can guide future experiments. We also emphasize the importance of multi-region recordings, and posit that studying individual components in isolation will be insufficient to understand the neural basis of behavior.Phosphorus (P) can be retained in mineral association with ferrous iron (Fe) as vivianite, Fe(II)3(PO4)2 ∙ 8 H2O, in lake sediments. The mineral is formed and remains stable under anoxic non-sulphidogenic conditions and, therefore, acts as a long-term P sink. In laboratory experiments under anoxic conditions, we investigated whether P adsorbed to amorphous Fe(III)-hydroxide functioned as a precursor phase of vivianite when added to different sediments as a treatment. The untreated sediments served as controls and were naturally Fe-rich (559 µmol/g DW) and Fe-poor (219 µmol/g DW), respectively. The solid P binding forms analysed by sequential extraction and X-ray diffraction were related to coinciding pore water analyses and the bacterial community compositions of the sediments by bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. In the treatments, within a period of 40 d, 70 % of the redox-sensitive Fe(III)-P was transformed into redox-stable P, which contained vivianite. The mineral was supersaturated in the pore water, but the presence of Fe(III)-P functioning as a precursor was sufficient for measurable vivianite formation. The composition of the microbial community did not differ significantly (PERMANOVA, p = 0.09) between treatment and control of the naturally Fe-rich sediment. In the naturally Fe-poor sediment, the microbial community changed significantly (PERMANOVA, p = 0.001) in response to the addition of Fe(III)-P to the sediment. The freshly formed redox-stable P was not retransferred to a redox-sensitive compound by aeration for 24 h until 90 % O2 saturation was reached in the sediment slurry. We conclude that 1) Fe(III)-hydroxide bound P, resulting from oxic conditions at the sediment-water interface, is immobilised during anoxic conditions and stable even after re-oxygenation; 2) the process is feasible within the time scales of anoxic lake stratification periods; and 3) in relatively Fe-poor lakes, Fe dosing can provide excess Fe to form the precursor.Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water has adverse impacts on the water treatment process and is effectively removed by ion exchange (IEX). Some researchers have proposed the term biological ion exchange (BIEX) for the process of continuous DOM removal by ion exchange without the need for chemical regeneration that results in brine waste. Surface water with moderate dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations (4-6 mg/L) and high sulfate concentrations (80 - 120 mg/L) was fed to two regenerated and two non-regenerated columns for 12,500 bed volumes (9 months) with the goal of investigating the effects of chemical and possibly biological regeneration on long-term IEX operation. Chemically regenerated columns achieved between 60 and 80% DOC removal for the entirety of the experiment, while non-regenerated columns achieved steady DOC removal of ~50%. Inorganic ion analysis showed that biological activity had minimal impact on DOC removal, and the main mechanism of removal was secondary IEX between sulfate (SO42-) and fractions of DOC with high affinities for ion exchange.
