Defects in mitochondrial system lead to a variety of disease. Therefore, detailed knowledge of mitochondrial proteome is vital to understand mitochondrial system and their function. Sequence databases contain large number of mitochondrial proteins but they are mostly not annotated. In this study, we developed a support vector machine approach, SubmitoLoc, to predict mitochondrial sub cellular locations of proteins based on various sequence derived properties. We evaluated the predictor using 10-fold cross validation. Our method achieved 88.56 % accuracy using all features. Average sensitivity and specificity for four-subclass prediction is 85.37% and 87.25% respectively. High prediction accuracy suggests that SubmitoLoc will be useful for researchers studying mitochondrial biology and drug discovery. © 2019 Biomedical Informatics.Nipah virus (NiV) is an ssRNA, enveloped paramyxovirus in the genus Henipaveridae with a case fatality rate >70%. We analyzed the NGS RNA-Seq gene expression data of NiV to detect differentially expressed genes (DEGs) using the statistical R package limma. We used the Cytoscape, Ensembl, and STRING tools to construct the gene-gene interaction tree, phylogenetic gene tree and protein-protein interaction networks towards functional annotation. We identified 2707 DEGs (p-value less then 0.05) among 54359 NiV genes. The top-up and down-regulated DEGs were EPST1, MX1, IFIT3, RSAD2, OAS1, OASL, CMPK2 and SLFN13, SPAC977.17 using log2FC criteria with optimum threshold 1.0. The top 20 up-regulated gene-gene interaction trees showed no significant association between Nipah and Tularemia virus. Similarly, the top 20 down-regulated genes of neither Ebola nor Tularemia virus showed an association with the Nipah virus. Hence, we document the top-up and down-regulated DEGs for further consideration as biomarkers and candidates for vaccine or drug design against Nipah virus to combat infection. © 2019 Biomedical Informatics.Nitrogen (N) is an essential macronutrient for plants. However, excessive use of N fertilizer for cultivation is an environmental hazard. A good adaption to N deficiency is known in the Tibetan hulless barley. Therefore, it is of interest to complete the metabolic analysis on LSZQK which is a low nitrogen (low-N) sensitive genotype and Z0284 that is tolerant to low-N. We identified and quantified 750 diverse metabolites in this analysis. The two genotypes show differences in their basal metabolome under normal N condition. Polyphenols and lipids related metabolites were significantly enriched in Z0284 having a basal role prior to exposure to low-N stress. Analysis of the differentially accumulated metabolites (DAM) induced by low-N explain the genotype-specific responses. Fourteen DAMs showed similar patterns of change between low-N and control conditions in both genotypes. This could be the core low-N responsive metabolites regardless of the tolerance level in hulless barley. We also identified 4 DAMs (serotonin, MAG (184) isomer 2, tricin 7-O-feruloylhexoside and gluconic acid) shared by both genotypes displaying opposite patterns of regulation under low-N conditions and may play important roles in low-N tolerance. This report provides a theoretical basis for further understanding of the molecular mechanisms of low-N stress tolerance in hulless barley. © 2019 Biomedical Informatics.The study describes preliminary experience of the use of external fixators for limb lengthening and deformity correction in combination with flexible intramedullary nailing in management of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia. Patients and methods The retrospective study included 8 patients (mean age 11.6 ± 3.38 years; range 7-17 years) with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia operated on using external circular frame and flexible intramedullary nailing. Mean follow-up was 2.6 years. Surgical technique consisted of percutaneous osteotomy of a segment and application of circular external frame. The intramedullary nailing was done using two bent nails. Hydroxyapatite-coated nails were applied in three patients; five patients had titanium nails. Amount of lengthening (cm and %), amount of deformity correction, duration of external fixator use, index of external fixation, "nail/medullary canal at narrowest site" ratio, "nail-medullary canal at osteotomy site" ratio were analyzed. Results and complications were assessed accorramedullary nailing and external fixation in the treatment of limb length discrepancy and deformity of long bones in patients with PFD. This strategy ensures reduced external fixation time and high accuracy of alignment. Intramedullary nails left in situ, especially nails with HA-coating, seem to prevent deformity recurrence and stimulate remodeling in dysplastic fibrous zones. © 2020 Professor P K Surendran Memorial Education Foundation.
