Hypernatremia is common in critical care, especially in severely burned patients. Its occurrence has been linked to increased mortality. Causes of hypernatremia involve a net gain of sodium or a loss of free water. Renal loss of electrolyte-free water due to urea-induced osmotic diuresis has been described as causative in up to 10% of hypernatremic critical ill patients. In this context, excessive urea production due to protein catabolism acts as major contributor. In severe burn injury, muscle wasting occurs as result of hypermetabolism triggered by ongoing systemic inflammation. In this retrospective study, severely burned patients were analysed for the occurrence of hypernatremia and subsequent signs of hypermetabolism. The urea creatinine ratio-as a surrogate for hypermetabolism-sufficiently discriminated between two groups. Four of nine hypernatremic burn patients (44%) had a highly elevated urea creatinine ratio, which was clearly associated with an increased urea production and catabolic index. This hypermetabolism was linked to hypernatremia via an elevated urea- and reduced electrolyte-fraction in renal osmole excretion, which resulted in an increased renal loss of electrolyte-free water. In hypermetabolic severely burned patients, the electrolyte-free water clearance is a major contributor to hypernatremia. A positive correlation to serum sodium concentration was shown.Potential therapeutic actions of the cannabinoids delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are based on their activity as analgesics, anti-emetics, anti-inflammatory agents, anti-seizure compounds. find more THC and CBD lipophilicity and their neurological actions makes them candidates as new medicinal approaches to treat central nervous system (CNS) diseases. However, they show differences about penetrability and disposition in the brain. The present article is an overview about THC and CBD crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and their brain disposition. Several findings indicate that CBD can modify the deleterious effects on BBB caused by inflammatory cytokines and may play a pivotal role in ameliorating BBB dysfunction consequent to ischemia. Thus supporting the therapeutic potential of CBD for the treatment of ischemic and inflammatory diseases of CNS. Cannabinoids positive effects on cognitive function could be also considered through the aspect of protection of BBB cerebrovascular structure and function, indicating that they may purchase substantial benefits through the protection of BBB integrity. Delivery of these cannabinoids in the brain following different routes of administration (subcutaneous, oral, and pulmonary) is illustrated and commented. Finally, the potential role of cannabinoids in drug-resistance in the clinical management of neurological or psychiatric diseases such as epilepsy and schizophrenia is discussed on the light of their crossing the BBB.The objective of the study was to assess the effects of feeding sunflower meal (SM) and seeds (SS) protected against rumen degradation on carcass characteristics and composition and fatty acid (FA) profile of lamb meat. The protection of SM and SS was achieved by treating both feeds with malic acid at 150 °C for 2 h (MAH treatment) and in a previous study this treatment was shown to decrease ruminal degradability of protein of both feeds and fat degradability of SS. Two homogeneous groups of 12 lambs each were fed ad libitum high-cereal concentrates and cereal straw from 14 to 26 kg of body weight. The two concentrates differed only in the treatment SM and SS, which were included either untreated (control) or MAH treated. The MAH-fed lambs had greater thickness of dorsal fat (p = 0.016) and greater (p ≤ 0.016) values of the color parameters a* (redness) and C* (chromaticity) of the Rectus abdominis muscle. However, there were no differences in carcass measurements and in water-holding capacity, chemical composition, pH, color, or fatty acid of Longissimus muscle. In summary, the MAH treatment resulted in only subtle changes in meat composition and quality. We developed a procedure for fabricating movable biological cell structures using biodegradable materials on a microfluidic chip. A photo-cross-linkable biodegradable hydrogel gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) was used to fabricate arbitrary microstructure shapes under a microscope using patterned ultraviolet light. The GelMA microstructures were movable inside the microfluidic channel after applying a hydrophobic coating material. The fabricated microstructures were self-assembled inside the microfluidic chip using our method of fluid forcing. The synthesis procedure of GelMA was optimized by changing the dialysis temperature, which kept the GelMA at a suitable pH for cell culture. RLC-18 rat liver cells (Riken BioResource Research Center, Tsukuba, Japan) were cultured inside the GelMA and on the GelMA microstructures to check cell growth. The cells were then stretched for 1 day in the cell culture and grew well on the GelMA microstructures. However, they did not grow well inside the GelMA microstructures. The GelMA microstructures were partially dissolved after 4 days of cell culture because of their biodegradability after the cells were placed on the microstructures. The results indicated that the proposed procedure used to fabricate cell structures using GelMA can be used as a building block to assemble three-dimensional tissue-like cell structures in vitro inside microfluidic devices. This study represents a comparison of the border trap behavior and reliability between HfO2 and ZrO2 films on n-In0.53Ga0.47As with an Al2O3 interfacial layer. The effect of different post metal annealing conditions on the trap response was analyzed and it was found that the N2H2 mixed FGA passivates the border trap quite well, whereas N2-based RTA performs better on interface traps. Al2O3/HfO2 showed more degradation in terms of the threshold voltage shift while Al2O3/ZrO2 showed higher leakage current behavior. Moreover, Al2O3/ZrO2 showed a higher permittivity, hysteresis, and breakdown field than Al2O3/HfO2.Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious viral disease of both domestic (goats and sheep) and wild ruminants. Caused by a morbillivirus, that belongs to the family Paramyxoviridae. The disease is clinically and pathologically similar to rinderpest of cattle and human measles. PPR is one of the most economically devastating viral diseases of small ruminants. In April 2015, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) launched the PPR Global Control and Eradication Strategy (PPR GCES) with the vision for global eradication by 2030. There is a strong and lasting international consensus to eradicate the disease in order to protect the livelihoods of the world's poorest populations. As with any disease, eradication is feasible when, policy, scientific and technical challenges are addressed. Ten majors challenges are described in this paper namely understanding small ruminant production, facilitating research to support eradication, refining laboratory testing, improving epidemiological understanding of the virus, defining infection of wildlife and other species, optimizing vaccine delivery and novel vaccines, developing better control of animal movement, heightening serological monitoring, understanding socio-economic impact, and garnering funding and political will.
