The spring 2020 campus closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic may have posed particular challenges related to the mentorship of science graduate students. In this study, science faculty mentors from one U.S. university report on potential delays to degree completion and their expectations of their mentees during this time. Nearly half of the faculty advisors surveyed expected their graduate student mentees to experience delayed time to graduation. Respondents also described making an effort to support their mentees through providing encouragement and identifying research-related goals students could complete remotely. One-fourth of respondents stated that they were not altering their expectations for their mentees. The respondents who did report having altered expectations varied between altering their immediate expectations and changing their overall expectations for degree completion. These findings relate not only to the immediate impact on graduate mentees, but also to the long-term impacts of COVID-19 on graduate education in the United States.Because of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, higher education institutions had to pivot rapidly to online remote learning. Many educators were concerned that the disparate impact of this crisis would exacerbate inequities in learning outcomes and student learning experiences, especially for students from minoritized backgrounds. We examined course grades and student perceptions of their learning experiences in fall (face-to-face) and spring (fully remote) quarters in an introductory biology course series at a public research university. Contrary to our hypothesis, we found that student course grades increased overall during remote learning, and equity gaps in course grades were mitigated for minoritized students. We hypothesize that instructors may have changed their grading practices to compensate for challenges in remote learning in crisis. However, spring students reported significant decreases in the amount of peer negotiation and social support, critical components of active learning. These findings suggest that remote teaching in crisis may have negatively affected student learning environments in ways that may not have been captured by grading practices. As a validated assessment, the Microbiology for Health Sciences Concept Inventory (MHSCI) is a valuable tool to evaluate student progress in health sciences microbiology courses. In this brief analysis, we survey MHSCI faculty users and report student MHSCI scores to determine the impact on student learning gains of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent quarantine in spring 2020. Although a majority of students reported moving to a fully online lecture and lab microbiology course in the spring 2020 semester, there was no statistically significant impact on student outcomes reported by the MHSCI, and by some measures, student learning gains increased in the semester students moved to online learning. Further research is necessary to determine the continuing impact of online lecture/lab courses on student outcomes on the MHSCI. Our analysis of data from spring 2020 shows that the MHSCI is still a statistically reliable measure of student misconceptions and overall difficulty scores for each item on the MHSCI was unchanged due to the pandemic.
Invasive aspergillosis is a prevalent fungal disease, especially in Asian countries with a high mortality rate. Voriconazole (VRZ) is the first choice for invasive aspergillosis treatment. Plasma concentration of this drug is unpredictable and varies among individuals. This variability is influenced by many factors leading to clinical implication. Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) may have a crucial role in the patients' treatment process. The HPLC method provides sufficient specificity and sensitivity for plasma VRZ concentration determination for TDM purposes of this drug.
Patients who initiated oral or intravenous VRZ for invasive aspergillosis were enrolled in this study. Demographic characteristics and clinical data, outcome, and adverse effects were documented. For each patient, the plasma sample was collected under steady-state condition and analyzed using a validated HPLC method.
A total of 22 measurements were performed. ALKBH5 inhibitor 1 clinical trial Fifty percent of patients were out of the therapeutic range. From them, 27.27% and 22.73% were in subtherapeutic and supratherapeutic ranges (<1
g/mL and >5.5
g/mL), respectively. There was a significant correlation between VRZ plasma concentration and treatment outcomes (
=0.022). Treatment failure was five times higher than treatment success in those in the subtherapeutic range. Adverse effects were observed more frequently in patients with supratherapeutic concentrations compared to those with non-supratherapeutic levels. Furthermore, the mortality rate in patients experiencing treatment failure was 2.17 times higher than those with treatment success.
TDM of VRZ plays an important role in better evaluation of efficacy and toxicity during treatment. Therefore, determination of the drug level may be of clinical significance.

Here, we report a case of newly diagnosed adenocarcinoma of the lung with a solitary brain metastasis and a biopsy confirmed adenocarcinoma in the tail of the pancreas. Cytomorphology and immunohistochemistry suggested the lung and pancreas tumors were distinct primaries. However, molecular analysis of the lung primary and tumor in the pancreas revealed the same mutations of functional significance in PIK3CA, NF1 and TP53, suggesting the tumors were clonal. A total of three cycles of single-agent pembrolizumab, and radiation to the lung and brain administered between cycles 1 and 2, resulted in marked responses in lung, brain and pancreatic tumors. Despite the discontinuation of the pembrolizumab after three cycles due to severe immune-mediated toxicities, the patient has had no progression 11 months after stopping all active treatment.
