To report the surgical outcomes of antegrade balloon dacryocystoplasty combined with pushed-type monocanalicular intubation as a primary surgical treatment in patients with congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

A retrospective cohort study was conducted at National Cheng Kung University Hospital. The medical records of all patients with congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction who underwent antegrade balloon dacryocystoplasty followed by pushed-type monocanalicular intubation as the primary surgical treatment from January 2018 to July 2020 were included. The monocanalicular tube was removed 1 to 2 weeks after intubation. Eltanexor ic50 Surgical success was defined as resolved epiphora 1 month after the tube was removed.

A total of 62 eyes of 48 patients were involved in this study. The mean age of the total population was 24.1 months (range 12 to 66 months). The mean duration of the tube indwelling in the nasolacrimal duct was 9.5 days (range 4 to 15 days). A total of 60 of the 62 eyes (96.77%) reported surgical success. Early tube loss occurred in 2 eyes (3.23%); however, epiphora was not reported afterward. No complications other than tube loss was recorded. There were no recurrences in patients who had undergone successful surgery observed up to July 2020.

To determine the knowledge and awareness about vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and factors affecting the practice and compliance with treatment in caregivers of children with VKC.

The study was conducted in a tertiary care pediatric hospital in northern India. It was a hospital-based cross-sectional study in which 65 caregivers (parents or guardians) were interviewed regarding their knowledge about the disease and attitude of caregivers.

Of 268 children with VKC visiting the ophthalmology department during the study period, 65 children met the inclusion criteria; 53 (81.54%) were boys and 12 (18.46%) were girls. A total of 69.2% of caregivers were not aware of the symptoms of the disease and 83% of caregivers were unaware of the side effects of eye drops used. A total of 24.61% of caregivers considered VKC affected school hours and other recreational activities of children (
< .001). Compliance with treatment decreases with more episodes of VKC and longer duration of symptoms.

The chronic course of the disease affects compliance with treatment and follow-up with an eye specialist. Proper education of caregivers of children with VKC can influence the compliance with treatment.

To evaluate the effect of an eyelid speculum on intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements in newborns.

A total of 54 eyes of 27 newborns were involved in the study. The IOP measurements were obtained under topical anesthesia with the Icare PRO (Icare Finland Oy) before and after inserting the infant type of Barraquer wire eyelid speculum. A paired
test was used to compare the measurements.

The mean IOP without the eyelid speculum was 9.04 ± 2.13 mm Hg (range 6.00 to 13.20 mm Hg) in the right eye and 9.26 ± 1.59 mm Hg (range 7.10 to 13.00 mm Hg) in the left eye. With the eyelid speculum in place, the mean IOP was 11.91 ± 2.23 mm Hg (range 9.10 to 15.80 mm Hg) in the right eye and 11.70 ± 1.89 mm Hg (range 8.40 to 14.50 mm Hg) in the left eye (

To examine the incidence and initial presentation of sports-related ocular injury in youth.

This retrospective case series study was performed at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Boston, Massachusetts. Inclusion criteria were visit dates between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2015, age 5 to 25 years, an ocular injury International Classifcation of Disease code, and a sports-related mechanism of injury.

The final sample was 223 patients, representing approximately 20% of all youth eye injuries (mean age 16.2 years (range 6 to 24 years); 78.9% boys, 21.2% girls). The most common diagnosis was hyphema (72.2%). Most injuries occurred with soccer (23.3%), baseball (17.0%), and basketball (11.7%), with a mean visual acuity of 20/40, 20/50, and 20/50, respectively. The injuries with the lowest mean visual acuity resulted from paintball (20/500) and airsoft gun shooting (20/200). Thirty-three patients (14.7%) required surgical intervention. The average number of follow-up visits within 1 year was five.

Approximately 20% of youth ocular injury visits were sports related, with male teenagers affected most.
