The Colpodea form a major clade of ciliates that are often found in environmental DNA sequencing studies. They are united by similar somatic ciliature, but differentiated by complex oral structures. Although there are four well supported colpodean subclades, there is disagreement in molecular phylogenetic inferences about their branching order. Using available nuclear SSU-rRNA sequences, we evaluated if the bursariomorphids or the platyophryids are sister to the remaining colpodeans. We inferred the "platyophryids-early" topologies using different alignment and masking methods, but constrained analyses could not reject the "bursariomorphids-early" topology. Both bursariomorphids and platyophryids clades have a similar number of nucleotide positions shared with the outgroup, and both are interconnected with the outgroup in phylogenetic networks. Based on these discordant results, it is hard to determine which clade branched off first, although the "platyophryids-early topology" is also supported by mitochondrial SSU-rRNA data. We also offer different reference alignments that can be used to phylogenetically place short- and long-read data from environmental DNA sequencing studies, and we propose some tentative evolutionary and ecological interpretations of those placements.Public awareness of language impairment in childhood (Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)) has been identified as an important determiner of research and clinical service delivery, yet studies directly assessing public awareness are lacking. This study surveyed awareness across 18 countries of Europe.
A questionnaire developed by an international team asked whether respondents had heard of language impairment affecting children, what they thought its manifestations and causes were and where they had heard of it. Respondents were also asked whether they had heard of autism, dyslexia, ADD/ADHD and speech disorder. The questionnaire was administered to members of the public in 18 European countries. A total of 1519 responses were obtained, spanning 6 age groups, 4 educational level groups and 3 income level groups.
Across all but one country, significantly fewer people had heard of language impairment than any of the other disorders (or 60 % compared to over 90 % for autism). Awareness tended to be lowest ining momentum, the findings of this study can serve as a baseline against which to compare future findings.
The study confirms that awareness of language impairment and knowledge of the breadth of its manifestations are low. It also suggests opportunities for how to increase awareness, including greater media coverage of language impairment and more efficient use of venues such as schools and healthcare. Ways in which cultural and linguistic differences may influence public awareness efforts are discussed, including the translatability of clinical labels and scientific terms. read more These may impact the acceptance of a common term and definition across all countries. In this study, a combined catalytic microbubble ozonation and biological process was developed and applied for efficient industrial phenolic wastewater (PWW) treatment. Catalytic activity of an iron-oxides (FeOx) doped granular activated carbon (GAC) catalyst (FeOx@GAC) in microbubble ozonation for PWW treatment was investigated. The results demonstrated that the FeOx@GAC catalyzed microbubble ozonation (O3/FeOx@GAC) obtained significantly higher reaction rate constant (k1 = 0.023 min-1) in TOC removal compared to the bare GAC catalyzed microbubble ozonation (O3/GAC, k1 = 0.013 min-1) and ordinary microbubble ozonation (k1 = 0.008 min-1). Destruction rate constant of phenolic compounds (k2) was improved from 0.014 min-1 (ordinary microbubble ozonation) to 0.025 min-1 (O3/FeOx@GAC). The 60-min pretreatment of PWW by O3/FeOx@GAC process enhanced BOD5/COD ratio from 0.31 to 0.76 and reduced the acute bio-toxicity by 79.2%. Screening and charact the main contributor to the biodegradation of phenolic compounds.Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are transported in the atmosphere, leading to both wet and dry deposition to the surface. The concentrations of 15 PFAS were measured at six locations in the Ohio-Indiana region of the U.S. during the summer of 2019 and compared to samples collected at a distant site in NW Wyoming. ΣPFAS concentrations ranged from 50-850 ng L-1, with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) being the dominant compound (~90%). Concentrations of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorosulfonic acid (PFOS) were similar to amounts observed over the past 20 years, indicating persistence in the atmosphere despite regulatory action, and the newer species HFPO-DA (GenX) was also widely detected in rainwater. ANOVA modeling and correlation matrices were used to determine association of PFAS concentrations, location, and functional group and chain length. Statistically significant differences (p less then 0.05) in PFAS profiles across sites separated by 10-100 km indicate that local point sources strongly contribute to wet deposition. This work introduces correlation plots for PFAS that allow rapid visual comparison of multi-analyte and multi-site data sets.Residual dissolved aluminum (Al) in drinking water is becoming a serious concern due to its high potential risks to human health. However, the mechanism by which residual dissolved Al forms is yet to be elucidated in detail. In this study, the effects of pre-oxidation by ozonation and chlorination on the properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and residual Al concentrations remaining in solution after coagulation were explored in a pilot-scale test. Changes in the DOM properties caused by the water treatment process were characterized by ultraviolet-visible absorbance spectroscopy. Theprotonation-active sites, carboxylic- and phenolic-type groupsof DOM were quantified by spectral parameter DlnA400 (differential log-transformed spectra at wavelength 400 nm) in combination with the revised non-ideal competitive adsorption model. The results show that ozonation and chlorination significantly affect the properties of DOM and the amount of residual dissolved Al in coagulated drinking water. This effect was associated with the changes in the carboxylic- and phenolic-type groups in DOM.
