Rice is one of the most important socioeconomic crops in the world. The tarsonemid mite Steneotarsonemus spinki is one of the most destructive pests for this crop and is restricted to some regions of Asia and America. The aim of this work was to map the risk of S. spinki invasion in rice-growing areas in the world. Presence data of Oryza sativa and S. spinki obtained from the literature and bioclimatic parameters from WorldClim were analyzed in the MaxEnt program to generate suitability indices and distribution maps for each species and for the two species together. High annual mean temperature associated with low temperature annual range were the most important environmental variables for the occurrence of O. sativa and S. spinki, and low rainfall favoring S. spinki. The model indicates that there are climatic conditions for the establishment of S. spinki in important rice-producing regions, such as western and central Africa, Oceania, Asia, and North, Central, and South America. Our results are useful for the efficient establishment of phytosanitary measures to prevent the dispersal of S. spinki to new rice-producing areas.Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare disorder with perinatal, infantile, childhood, and adult presentations. Severe forms are autosomal recessive with an early onset, whereas milder forms have a later onset. The underlying cause of the disease is a mutation based on a genetic disorder of the tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP) gene, leading on the one hand to decreased activity of the TNSALP enzyme, and on the other hand to accumulation of TNSALP substrates. Symptoms like non-traumatic and non-healing fractures, musculoskeletal pain, chondrocalcinosis, seizures, premature loss of fully rooted teeth or delayed development of milk teeth, respiratory insufficiency, and calcinosis in muscles, kidneys, and joints occur. Supportive treatment is important for HPP patients, including mechanical ventilation, accurate fracture treatment, physical therapy, dental monitoring, and follow-up care to avoid subsequent problems. A causal enzyme therapy replacement with asfotase-alfa was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2015. Asfotase-alfa improves respiratory insufficiency, bone mineralization, and long-term survival, and has a very good safety profile.INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES To evaluate the clinical relevance of high-resolution hand and wrist ultrasound (US) findings and their possible associations with anti-citrullinated peptide antibodies in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). METHODS Ninety-seven consecutive pSS patients (American-European Consensus Group, 2002) without meeting the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria (1987) for rheumatoid arthritis (RA); 20 RA patients (ACR/European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) criteria, 2010); and 80 healthy individuals with comparable age, gender, and ethnicity were enrolled in a case-control study. Disease activity was assessed by EULAR Sjögren's Syndrome Disease Activity Index (ESSDAI). US was performed by one expert blinded to anti-CCP, anti-MCV, and IgM rheumatoid factor tested by ELISA. RESULTS Frequencies of grade 3 synovitis (9.3 vs. 0%, p = 0.004), tenosynovitis (36.1 vs. 3.8%, p  less then  0.001), and erosions (27.8 vs. 7.5%, p = 0.001) on US were higher in pSS patients than in healthy controlindividuals.• Numbers of synovitis and tenosynovitis on US were correlated with ESSDAI values.• Most pSS patients with erosions on US were negative for anti-CCP, but anti-CCP ≥ 3× cut-off value was associated with the presence of erosions in this disease.• Erosions in pSS were mainly small size contrasting with moderate/large size in RA, and positive power Doppler synovitis predominated in RA.Although theoretical studies on Anesthesia Information Management Systems (AIMS) have proved their benefits, much less attention has been paid to researching the actual adoption of AIMS. Only a few studies from the USA and Western Europe have been published up to now. The purpose of this article is to assess the adoption, motivation for, and barriers to, usage of AIMS from the perspective of early Czech adopters of these systems. A questionnaire was used to gather adopters' views on motivating factors, benefits encountered after introduction and obstacles perceived to adopting AIMS. Data about usage, costs and functionalities of each of the AIMS was obtained using semi-structured telephone interviews prior to sending out the questionnaire. Five AIMS from three different vendors in four academic hospitals (20% of Czech hospitals of this type) were identified. Improved clinical documentation and convenience for anesthesiologists was reported from every site. Lack of funds, however, was identified as the primary barrier to further adoption. The cost of introduction of AIMS per operating room varied between 1000 and 40,000 US dollars. Although the number of AIMS in the Czech Republic is limited, findings suggest that benefits have been experienced on every site. Findings corroborate previous studies from the USA and Western Europe.Yarrowia lipolytica is an oleaginous yeast species with the ability to grow on a number of substrates types, especially industrial wastes. This paper concerns the statistical optimization of fermentation parameters and media to ensure consistent and improved Y. lipolytica protein production. A strain of Y. lipolytica A-101 was observed to be proficient in producing single cell protein, amino acids, and vitamin B12 while utilizing biofuel waste instead of a complete YPD medium for yeast growth. A1331852 A fractional fractal design experiment was then applied, and the two fermentation parameters of temperature and pH were recognized to have a significant effect on the protein and amino acid production. Subsequently, the response surface methodology with a three-level complete factorial design was employed to optimize these influential parameters. Therefore, five different measuring systems were utilized to construct a quadratic model and a second-order polynomial equation. Optimal levels of parameters were then obtained by analysis of the model and the numerical optimization method.
