Upon systemic administration, nanoparticles encounter serum proteins in the biological system resulting in the formation of "protein corona" on the surface. Increased understanding of the relationship between nanoparticles' "chemical identity" and "biological identity" can contribute to improved clinical translation. Recent studies of protein corona composition on nanoparticles, including from our group, suggest that a strategic choice of materials can influence the types of protein adsorbed from plasma and lead to improved delivery efficiency. This mini-review reflects on the fundamental knowledge of nanoparticle protein corona and highlights the recent applications of protein corona on nanoparticles' systemic circulation, cell, and tissue-specific delivery. A major limitation of tissue- and blood-derived tumor markers is the lack of spatial resolution to image tumor heterogeneity. Tissue markers derived from tumor biopsies usually represent only a small tumor subregion at a single timepoint and are therefore often not representative of the tumors' biology or the biological alterations during and after treatment. Similarly, liquid biopsies give an overall picture of the tumors' secreted factors but completely lack any spatial resolution. Radiomics has the potential to give complete three-dimensional information about the tumor. We conducted a comprehensive literature search to assess the correlation of radiomics to tumor biology and treatment outcome in HNSCC and to assess current limitations of the radiomic biomarkers. In total, 25 studies that explored the ability of radiomics to predict tumor biology and phenotype in HNSCC and 28 studies that explored radiomics to predict post-treatment events were identified. Out of these 53 studies, only three failed to show a significant correlation. The major technical challenges are currently artifacts due to metal implants, non-standardized contrast injection, and delineation uncertainties. All studies to date were retrospective and none of the above-mentioned radiomics signatures have been validated in an independent cohort using an independent software implementation, which shows that transferability due to the numerous technical challenges is currently a major limitation. However, radiomics is a very young field and these studies hopefully pave the way for clinical implementation of radiomics for HNSCC in the future.Background and purpose Most of the previous studies evaluating lung volume of pectus excavatum (PE) patients were based on spirometric measurements. We aimed to calculate lung volume of patients with PE and compare them with lung volume of patients without chest wall deformity using CT volumetry. Methods After institutional review board approval, preoperative chest CT of PE patients who underwent minimal invasive procedure between January 2012 and February 2018, were evaluated retrospectively. As a control group, age and sex matched patients who underwent chest CT scan in the same period were enrolled. Total, right and left lung volumes were calculated using an automated software. Haller indexes were measured for both groups. Lung volumes and Haller indexes compared between the two groups. We also compared left and right lung volumes in both groups. We evaluated whether there is a correlation across the Haller index and total lung volume. Results Total, right and left lung volumes were not statistically different between the two groups. While left lung volumes were significantly smaller in PE group (p = 0.041), there was no significant difference between the left and right lung volume in the control group (p = 0.12). Haller index and total lung volume showed no significant correlation between patients with the same age and gender (p = 0.14, R = -0.3). Conclusions PE deformity does not reduce lung volume when compared to age and sex matched control group. Quantitative CT volumetric evaluation of lung gives valuable data about lung volume.Purpose The correlation between right hepatic vein (RHV) diameter and inferior RHV (IRHV) incidence and that between IRHV incidence and other clinical features remain unclear. We investigated factors correlated with IRHV incidence as well as provide a simple and reliable method for predicting IRHV presence preoperatively. Methods We obtained computed tomography (CT) imaging data of 1980 patients from the Department of Radiology, Qingdao Municipal Hospital, from July 1, 2016, to July 1, 2017. We excluded patients with heart disease, inferior vena cava (IVC) disease, history of liver surgery or trauma, space-occupying lesions in the liver, and other diseases, which can cause hepatic hemodynamic changes. CT images of patients were three-dimensionally reconstructed. We measured RHV and IRHV diameter as well as the angle between the RHV and the IVC. Results Data on 299 patients were included in this study; the incidence of IRHV was 34.44%. Sex, age, and the angle between the RHV and IVC did not correlate with IRHV incidence. RHV diameter negatively correlated with IRHV incidence (P 8.86 mm, but is present with RHV diameter less then 8.86 mm. This suggests that measuring only RHV diameter can predict the presence of an IRHV when IRHV-related hepatectomy and IRHV preserved living donor liver transplantation are needed.Streptococcus pneumoniae is a Gram-positive human pathogen that causes millions of infections worldwide with an increasing occurrence of antibiotic resistance. The substrate specificity of PiuBCDA is not fully established. Herein, we report the backbone 1H, 13C and 15N resonance assignments of the 31 kDa soluble, extracellular domain of the substrate binding protein PiuA in the apo form and in complex with Ga(III) and the catechol siderophore-mimic 4-LICAM. These studies provide valuable information for further functional studies of interactions with other proteins, metals, and small molecules.
