Hi, my name is Phoebe Ann Moses. Some people call me Annie Mosey. I'm a famous markswoman/shooter.
I was born on August 13th, 1860, in Drake County Ohio.
I'm the sixth out of the nine children my mother Susan Wise gave birth to; & the fifth out of seven that survived.
My dad Jacob Mosey always took me out into the forest hunting when I was young.
He died when I was five, due to overexposure in a blizzard.
We were so poor mom had to sold the farm and I started trapping and hunting animals in the forest at the age of eight to keep my family fed. She married Daniel Brumbaugh later on but he died later on too.
I was sent to my foster parents whom I call the "wolves," they worked me as a slave and abused me physically & mentally. I escaped from them twice and reunited with mom at the age of 15 in a new farm where I continued to hunt to feed my family.
I sold anything we didn't eat into the market for some extra money, and soon people started requesting for my kills.
I entered a live pigeon shooting match against Frank Butler in 1881, although I won that match, he won my heart.
We married a year later and started touring around the world as "Butler & Oakley". I was called Mrs. Frank Butler, but my stage name was Annie Oakley. We joined the show "Buffalo Bill's Wild West" in 1885. I met the Indian tribe chief Sitting Bull, he was so impressed by my shooting skills he unofficially adopted me & granted me the name "little sure shot," because I was only 5 ft tall.
In Europe, I performed for Queen Victoria of the UK, King Umberto I of Italy, President Marie François Sadi Carnot of France/other crowned heads of state, and knocked the ashes of the cigarette held in the Germany's King's mouth.
I was not accepted into any wars even though I requested, my idea of women learning firearms was a joke to Americans, even though I taught 15000 women how to defend themselves with a gun throughout the country. I was badly injured on a train accident with my husband and died on November 3rd, 1926. My husband stopped eating and died 16 days later. Our ashes were placed in Ohio.
I grew up as a tomboy; as I always said, "I'm not afraid to love a man, I ain't afraid to shoot him either. I aim to misbehave. For me sitting still is harder than any kind of work."
