The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in recent decades has led to innovation and new development opportunities in many industries. The application of AI technologies in the medical and healthcare sector offers significant potential benefit. In this paper, the integration of AI into healthcare research is introduced to encourage more medical and healthcare experts to research this promising cross-disciplinary area. After introducing the basic concepts that underlie AI, the two major schools of machine learning approaches, namely 'supervised learning' and 'unsupervised learning', are discussed. Next, two commonly used algorithms (artificial neural networks and decision trees) are discussed. The paper then focuses on three healthcare applications of AI technologies, including predicting postoperative mortality, quality of life in older adults, and risk of dementia. Finally, the challenges to integrating AI into healthcare research such as class imbalance, missing data, and data scarcity are discussed along with feasible approaches to resolving these challenges.In this article, technologies that have been widely adopted and used in the field of allied health education in recent years are identified and introduced. These technologies may be distinguished based on education content and approach into the following three categories online-offline digital education, which uses massive open online courses, CD-ROM, and similar learning tools; mobile learning, which uses mobile phones, tablets, and other devices to connect to the Internet of things; and digital simulation education, which uses virtual reality, virtual patient simulation, serious gaming, and gamification. Preliminary positive findings regarding the effectiveness of using the above technologies have been reported in the literature. Therefore, to better understand the impact of new technology, it is recommended that relevant medical/nursing educators should continue introducing practical courses to evaluate their impact on learning. However, funding limitations and the declining birthrate / population aging are two key threats to education that remain to be effectively addressed and overcome.Taiwan officially entered the era of negative population growth in 2020, with the number of births falling below the number of deaths. Taiwan society is facing the severe problems of low birthrate and aging population, which will exacerbate the social gap in medical resources. Fortunately, rapid progress in developing smart technologies (Button et al., 2014) should bring new opportunities for healthcare. Therefore, the focus of and approach to healthcare should be adjusted (While & Dewsbury, 2011). On the one hand, applying smart technology in medical / nursing staff education offers myriad opportunities for improvement (Car et al., 2019), including using virtual reality in training, using mobile technology tools in education, and using Internet of Things technology to assist medical/nursing staff in the clinical-care process. Moreover, smart education technology will play an important, auxiliary role in the healthcare field in terms of mobile applications, robot practice, simulation experience, digital medico support healthcare, key research and practical issues will be how to apply related innovations to promote medical education, combine clinical research, and effectively integrate smart technology into healthcare.
In nursing homes, residents with dementia frequently receive potentially inappropriate medications that are associated with an increased risk of adverse events. Despite known sex differences in clinical presentation and sociodemographic characteristics among persons with dementia, few studies have examined sex differences in patterns and predictors of potentially inappropriate medicationuse.
The objectives of this study were to examine sex differences in the patterns of antipsychotic and benzodiazepine use in the 180days following admission to a nursing home, estimate clinical and sociodemographic predictors of antipsychotic and benzodiazepine use in male and female residents, and explore the effects of modification by sex on the predictors of using these drug therapies.
We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 35,169 adults aged 66years and older with dementia who were newly admitted to nursing homes in Ontario, Canada between 2011 and 2014. Health administrative databases were linked to detailed c in this vulnerable population.
Males and females with dementia differed in their exposure to antipsychotics and benzodiazepines at nursing home admission and their patterns of use following admission. A greater understanding of factors driving sex differences in potentially inappropriate medication use may help tailor interventions to reduce exposure in this vulnerable population.As being a rapidly developing area, the production of nondairy-based functional beverages continues to accelerate considerably. In the present study, the probiotification of a mixture of the juices of Jerusalem artichoke, pineapple, pumpkin, spinach, and cucumber has been utilized for the development of probiotic fruit-vegetable juice. Lactic acid fermentation was comparatively performed by Lactobacillus acidophilus DSM13241, Lacticaseibacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei ATCC 55544, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus ATCC53103, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum DSMZ 20174, and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 at 37 °C for 24 h. Selleck BC-2059 Following, the fermented products were kept at 8 °C for 45 days, and viability of the strains were tested during the storage period, which refers 15th, 30th, and 45th days. During fermentation, the number of viable probiotic cells increased up to 9.42 log CFU/mL. Consequently, at the end of storage, all strains exhibited an acceptable amount of viability along with L. rhamnosus ATCC 53103 with the highest value reaching 9.30 log CFU/mL. The beverage was successfully scaled up in a bioreactor followed by a sensory evaluation. Statistical analysis revealed that there is a significant difference (p less then 0.05) on how much the product was enjoyed between all tested samples with an average score of 3.8 out of 7.0. Thus, flavor and consumer acceptability of the beverage was improved with the addition of 30% of apple juice. The results affirm that the proposed novel fermented mixture of Jerusalem artichoke, pineapple, pumpkin, spinach, and cucumber stands as a promising functional product to be placed in the beverage market.
