The role of serum lipids in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD) remains unclear, and the results of previous reports remain conflicting. We aimed to conduct this systematic review and meta-analysis to identify the potential relationships of blood lipids and the pathogenesis of PD.
PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases were searched from inception to March 31, 2020, to identify potential studies with case-control or cohort study design on the relationship of serum lipids and PD. Stata 15.1 software was used for data syntheses after extraction of relevant data.
A total of 12 studies with 1506 PD patients and 7330 healthy controls were included. There were no significant differences in the TC (SMD=-0.08, 95% CI [-0.45, 0.33]), LDL-C (SMD=-0.12, 95% CI [-0.46, 0.18]), and TG (SMD=-0.05, 95% CI [-0.18, 0.06]) among PD patients and healthy controls. There was significant difference (SMD=-0.32, 95% CI [-0.42, -0.25]) in the TG level among PD patients and healthy controls. Subgroup analysis by Asian and non-Asian countries indicated that geographical location was not the source of heterogeneity. And no significant publication bias was found (all P>.05).
TG serum levels are significantly lower in PD patients, more studies are needed to further elucidate role of lipid in the PD development.

The enteric nervous system degenerates gradually with age, and α-synuclein (α-syn) is a suitable marker of enteric nervous system degeneration, which is intimately related with endoplasmic reticulum stress and unfolded protein response (UPR
). Saponins from Panax japonicus (SPJ) have obvious protective effects on neurons in several degenerative disease models. Here, the study was designed to investigate whether SPJ could reverse the neuron degeneration through regulating the UPR
in the colon myenteric plexus of aging rats.
Aging rats had been treated with SPJ for 6 months since they were aged 18 months. Then, the colon samples were collected and neuron morphology in the myenteric plexus was observed. Immunohistochemistry staining was used to detect the expressions of NeuN, α-syn, GRP78 and three different UPR
branches. Double immunofluorescence was used to determine the co-localization of α-syn and NeuN, GRP78 and NeuN.
Neurons degenerated in the colon myenteric plexus of aging rats, but co-localization of α-syn and NeuN increased. In addition, both the expressions of GRP78 and three UPR
branch signaling pathway proteins decreased in the colon myenteric plexus of aging rats. Treatment of SPJ almost alleviated the above effects in aging rats, except for ATF6.
SPJ could reverse the neuron loss caused by accumulation of α-syn in the myenteric plexus of colon in aging rats, which is potentially associated with increased GRP78 and most URP
changes. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2021; 21 85-93.

Among them, attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is present in almost one out of every four subjects with SUD and is associated with higher severity, more frequent polysubstance dependence and increased risk for other mental health problems in SUD patients. Despite studies suggesting a genetic basis in the co-occurrence of these two conditions, the genetic factors involved in the joint development of both disorders and the mechanisms mediating these causal relationships are still unknown. In this study, we tested whether the genetic liability to five SUD-related phenotypes share a common background in the general population and clinically diagnosed ADHD individuals from an in-house sample of 989 subjects and further explored the genetic overlap and the causal relationship between ADHD and SUD using pre-existing GWAS datasets. Our results confirm a common genetic background between ADHD and SUD and support the current literature on the causal effect of the liability to ADHD on the risk for SUD. We added novel findings on the effect of the liability of lifetime cannabis use on ADHD and found evidence of shared genetic background underlying SUD in general population and in ADHD, at least for lifetime cannabis use, alcohol dependence and smoking initiation. These findings are in agreement with the high comorbidity observed between ADHD and SUD and highlight the need to control for substance use in ADHD and to screen for ADHD comorbidity in all SUD patients to provide optimal clinical interventions.
Adolescent mental health is a significant health care issue. Friends play an important role in the lives of adolescents with mental health concerns and help to improve outcomes related to depression and suicide. However, little is known about the experiences of adolescents who help their friends with these concerns.
A phenomenological research design involving unstructured interviews was used to answer the question what is the lived experience of adolescents who provide support to friends with anxiety, depression, or who express suicidal ideation?" Participants for this study were aged 16-17 and included both males (n = 2) and females (n = 3).
Participants described their experience as "Kids Helping Kids" which is defined by the following themes Being Fearful, Maintaining Vigilance, Seeking Knowledge, Keeping Secrets, Involving Others, Setting Boundaries, and Feeling Honored.
Helping a friend with mental health concerns can be challenging yet rewarding. Nurses should be aware of this role that some adolescents undertake and include the friends of adolescents with mental health concerns as part of plans of care.
