Results indicate that emotional eating partially mediates the relationship between perceived stress and dietary quality. The total effect of perceived stress scores on dietary quality scores was -0.24 (p = .006); the direct effect of perceived stress scores on dietary quality scores (controlling for emotional eating scores) was -0.16 (p = .107), and the mediating (indirect) effect of emotional eating was -0.09 (p = .001). The proportion of mediation was 0.36 (36%) (p = .008). This study identifies an important mechanism of obesogenic behavior and can be used to inform future obesity prevention and intervention strategies tailored for the Hispanic/Latino adolescent population.Antioxidants with high efficacy and low toxicity have the potential to treat cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury (CIRI). Dienone monocarbonyl curcumin analogs (DMCA) capable of overcoming the instability and pharmacokinetic defects of curcumin possess notable antioxidant activity but are found to be significantly toxic. In this study, a novel skeleton of the monoenone monocarbonyl curcumin analogue sAc possessing reduced toxicity and improved stability was designed on the basis of the DMCA skeleton. Moreover, 32 sAc analogs were obtained by applying a green, simple, and economical synthetic method. Multiple sAc analogs with an antioxidant protective effect in PC12 cells were screened using an H2O2-induced oxidative stress damage model, and quantitative evaluation of structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model with regression coefficient of R2 = 0.918921 was built through random forest algorithm (RF). Among these compounds, the optimally active compound sAc15 elicited a potent protective effect on cell growth of PC12 cells by effectively eliminating ROS generation in response to oxidative stress injury by activating the Nrf2/HO-1 antioxidant signaling pathway. In addition, sAc15 exhibited good protection against CIRI in the mice middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model. In this paper, we provide a novel class of antioxidants and a potential compound for stroke treatment.A library of Sox-pyrrolizidines was rapidly prepared by microwave-assisted, one-pot, three-component, 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylides from l-proline and isatin, with various β-nitrostyrenes. Nitro-Sox compounds, 4b, 4d and 4e inhibit HEWL amyloid fibril formation by ThT studies with percentages of fluorescence intensity of 55.4, 42.9 and 40.3%, respectively. Further studies with MTT assay, Raman spectroscopy, TEM and molecular docking supported these promising candidates for activity against amyloid misfolding, a phenomenon leading to Alzheimer's disease pathology. The enzymes, catechol O-methyltransferase (COMT) and monoamine oxidase (MAO) are important drug targets, and inhibitors of these enzymes are established therapy for symptomatic Parkinson's disease (PD). COMT inhibitors enhance the bioavailability of levodopa to the brain, and therefore are combined with levodopa for the treatment of motor fluctuations in PD. Inhibitors of the MAO-B isoform, in turn, are used as monotherapy or in conjunction with levodopa in PD, and function by reducing the central degradation of dopamine. It has been reported that 1-tetralone and 1-indanone derivatives are potent and specific inhibitors of MAO-B, while compounds containing the nitrocatechol moiety (e.g. tolcapone and entacapone) are often potent COMT inhibitors. The present study attempted to discover compounds that exhibit dual COMT and MAO-B inhibition by synthesizing series of 1-tetralone, 1-indanone and related derivatives substituted with the nitrocatechol moiety. These compounds are structurally related to series of nitrocatechol derivatives of chalcone that have recently been investigated as potential dual COMT/MAO inhibitors. The results show that 4-chromanone derivative (7) is the most promising dual inhibitor with IC50 values of 0.57 and 7.26 μM for COMT and MAO-B, respectively, followed by 1-tetralone derivative (4d) with IC50 values of 0.42 and 7.83 μM for COMT and MAO-B, respectively. Based on their potent inhibition of COMT, it may be concluded that nitrocatechol compounds investigated in this study are appropriate for peripheral COMT inhibition, which represents an important strategy in the treatment of PD.A good understanding of the nutrient cycle under a regional development strategy is crucial for nutrient management decision-making. Quantitatively assessment of nutrient flow under the regional coordinated development strategy in mainland China can provide scientific reference for achieving global high-quality coordinated economic and agricultural development. In this study, the characteristics of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) flows of agricultural systems in mainland China from 1998 to 2030 were quantified using nutrient flows in food chain environment and resource (NUFER) model. The results revealed that national N and P surplus intensity were 50.3 and 18.6 kg·hm-2 in 2018, respectively, and there is still space for soil nutrient retention. The national input and output of N and P showed a continuous upward trend over the last two decades. Chemical fertilizer application and livestock rearing are the key points for nutrient management in China's agricultural systems. Under the regional development strategy, considerable geographical variation in N and P surplus intensity was observed across the country. From 1998 to 2013, the regional distribution of N and P surplus intensity was in accordance with regional economic characteristics. Areas with higher N and P surplus intensities were mainly in the eastern and central regions. From 2014 to 2018, equal emphasis on ecology and economy in the Yangtze River Economic Belt allowed development without aggravating the deterioration of the N and P surplus in the region. find more Over the next 10 years, our simulation predicts that future nutrient footprints tend to decrease, and coordinated governance of regional development and agricultural environment protection are the key to regional sustainable development. The management of digestate from food waste (DFW) has become a big challenge for anaerobic digestion (AD) plants. It is crucial to understand the characteristics of DFW for its beneficial utilization. This study investigated the long-term characteristics of DFW from an industrial-scale AD plant in China for 16 months. The result showed that the characteristics of the DFW were relatively stable. The DFW contained considerable amounts of organic matter (23-40% of lignin and 12-26% of protein) and abundant nutrients (N, P, and K), with high concentrations of metals (e.g., 55.17 mg g-1 and 15.55 mg g-1 of Ca and Fe) and sulfur (1.40%) on a dry basis. Based on the results, pyrolysis and composting were evaluated as optional conversion ways of DFW. The pyrolysis temperature range of 500 °C to 600 °C was recommended for producing biochar. In this temperature range, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of the produced biochar is over 120 m2 g-1. The composting offered the best potential for recovering the nutrients from DFW, but the high ammonia gas content (6970 ppm) should be paid attention to during composting.
