However, BPs may negatively affect osteoblasts, impairing peri-implant bone formation. The goal of this study was to assess the effects BPs have on surface-mediated osteogenesis of osteoblasts. MG63 cells were cultured on 15-mm grade 2 titanium disks smooth, hydrophobic-microrough, or hydrophilic-microrough (Institut Straumann AG, Basel, Switzerland). Tissue culture polystyrene (TCPS) was used as a control. At confluence, cells were treated with 0, 10-8 , 10-7 , and 10-6 M of alendronate, zoledronate, or ibandronate for 24 hr. Sprague Dawley rats were also treated with 1 μg/kg/day ibandronate or phosphate-buffered saline control for 5 weeks. Calvarial osteoblasts (rat osteoblasts [rOBs]) were isolated, characterized, and cultured on surfaces. Osteogenic markers in the media were quantified using ELISAs. BP treatment reduced osteocalcin, osteoprotegerin, osteopontin, bone morphogenetic protein-2, prostaglandin E2 , transforming growth factor β1, interleukin 10, and vascular endothelial growth factor in MG63 cells. The effect was more robust on rough surfaces, and higher concentrations of BPs stunted production to TCPS/PT levels. Ibandronate conditioned rOBs produced less osteogenic markers similar to direct BP treatment. These results suggest that BP exposure jeopardizes the pro-osteogenic response osteoblasts have to microstructured surfaces. Their effects persist in vivo and negatively condition osteoblast response in vitro. Clinically, BPs could compromise osseointegration. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.BACKGROUND We examined the association of patient factors, gynecologic diagnoses, and hospital characteristics with utilization of the robotic approach for benign hysterectomy. METHODS We performed cross-sectional study of women (n = 725 050) undergoing hysterectomies in the 2012 to 2014 National Inpatient Sample. RESULTS A total of 725 050 women underwent inpatient hysterectomy for benign indications 70345 (10%) were performed robotically. Dinaciclib Women were more likely to receive robotic hysterectomy at teaching hospitals (RR 1.60 [95% CI 1.54-1.66]) after adjustment for other patient factors, gynecologic diagnoses, and hospital characteristics. They were more likely to undergo robotic hysterectomy at large (RR 1.34 [95% CI 1.29-1.39]) and for-profit hospitals (RR 1.16 [95% CI 1.11-1.22]). Women were less likely to undergo robotic hysterectomy if they were rural (RR 0.68 [95% CI 0.64-0.72]), African-American (RR 0.78 [95% CI 0.74-0.82]), or publicly insured or uninsured (RR 0.55 [95% CI 0.53-0.57]) women. However, its application is greatly hampered by hydrophobicity, toxicity and nonspecific delivery to the targeting tissue and that causes accumulation in the liver and kidney. In order to overcome these limitations, we prepared IR808-PEG-FA from IR808, amino-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (NH2 -PEG-NH2 , denoted as PEG) and folate (FA). PEG, an accepted hydrophilic medicinal agent, was introduced to improve hydrophobicity, and FA was used to increase targeting ability of the conjugate. The obtained product provides a good water solubility and stronger light intensity in near infrared (NIR)-imaging, and CCK-8 test demonstrated which had no appreciable toxicity. In addition, the cell uptake results indicated that IR808-PEG-FA was specifically targeted to positive tumors cells with folate receptor (FR) compared with IR808, and thus it may be used as a novel diagnostic agent or imaging-guided agent for cancer treatment. The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is spreading fast and is affecting the clinical workers at much higher risk than the general population. Little is known about COVID-19 effect on pregnant women; however, the emerging evidence suggests they may be at high risk of asymptomatic disease. In light of projected shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), there is an aggressive attempt at conservation. In obstetrics, the guidelines on PPE use are controversial and differ among hospitals, globally, as well as nationally. The centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) recommend using N95 respirators, which are respirators that offer a higher level of protection instead of a facemask for when performing or present for an aerosol-generating procedures (AGP). However, the second stage of labor is not considered an AGP. The second stage of labor can last up to 4 hours. During that time, labor and delivery personnel is in close contact to patients, who are exerting extreme effort during and frequently blow out their breath, cough, shout, and vomit, all of which put the health care team at risk, considering that COVID-19 transmission occurs through aerosol generated by coughing and sneezing. The CDC and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) do not provide clarification on the use of N95 during the second stage. We recommend that labor and delivery personnel have the utmost caution and be granted the protection they need to protect themselves and other patients. This includes providing labor and delivery personnel full PPE including N95 for the second stage of labor. This is critical to ensure the adequate protection for health care workers and to prevent spread to other health care workers and patients.
