=to grow plants you need seeds, soil, light, warmth and water. the settlers were like the seeds planted in ireland on the fertile land. so with the right conditions they would have more families meaning the settler population would increase. this meant ireland could not be used as a base by england's enemies as the settlers would outnumber them.

=england's enemies were spain and france (and ireland). they were catholic while england was protestant.
=a country wants to control another one for wealth, power, religion, revenge, politics (culture) and defence.

+the ulster chiefs were defeated at kinsale (1601) and they surrendered (1603)

-in parts of ireland the irish were still rebellious.
-not enough settlers had arrived.
-outside of the pale the irish were still in control.
-the religious division between irish catholic and protestant settlers remained with the catholic irish in the majority.

1541= henry king of ireland as being king sounds better and more powerful than lord.+
1553-1558= mary tudor's first plantation so they can spread protestism.+
1586= elizabeth's second plantation so they can try spread it again.+
1598= english defeat at yellow ford meaning ireland have a better chance of getting control back.-
1601= irish defeat at kindle so irish have lost their chance of getting control.+
1603= irish surrendered meaning english won the battle.+
