Menstrual blood loss (140.1 mL vs. 127.02 mL; P = 0.44) and mean fibroid volume reduction (47.5 cm3 vs. 36.0 cm3; P = 0.17) were similar between Black and White women at 12 months. Although not statistically significant, the intraoperative total blood loss and uterine blood loss was lower in Black women than White women, despite greater operative time (160 minutes vs. 137 minutes; P = 0.09). Conclusions These results are promising in providing an alternative uterine-sparing option for Black women and may help to provide a minimally invasive option that can address some of the racial inequities in care for Black women with UF.
Established breast cancer risk factors, such as hormone replacement therapy and reproductive history, are thought to act by increasing estrogen and progesterone (P4) activity.
We aimed to use
screening data to identify chemicals that increase the synthesis of estradiol (E2) or P4 and evaluate potential risks.
Using data from a high-throughput (HT)
steroidogenesis assay developed for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ToxCast program, we identified chemicals that increased estradiol (E2-up) or progesterone (P4-up) in human H295R adrenocortical carcinoma cells. We prioritized chemicals by their activity. We compiled
studies and assessments about carcinogenicity and reproductive/developmental (repro/dev) toxicity. We identified exposure sources and predicted intakes from the U.S. EPA's ExpoCast.
We found 296 chemicals increased E2 (182) or P4 (185), with 71 chemicals increasing both.
data often showed effects consistent with this mechanism. Of the E2- and P4-up chemicals, about 30r drugs have not been evaluated for carcinogenic potential and are priorities for study and exposure reduction. https//doi.org/10.1289/EHP8608.
The U.S. EPA's in vitro screening data identified several hundred chemicals that should be considered as potential risk factors for breast cancer because they increased E2 or P4 synthesis. Adenosine disodium triphosphate compound library chemical In vitro data is a helpful addition to current toxicity assessments, which are not sensitive to mammary gland effects. Relevant effects on the mammary gland are often not noticed or are dismissed, including for 2,4-dichlorophenol and cyfluthrin. Fifty-three active E2-up and 59 active P4-up chemicals that are in consumer products, food, pesticides, or drugs have not been evaluated for carcinogenic potential and are priorities for study and exposure reduction. https//doi.org/10.1289/EHP8608.Objectives To describe the study design and clinical characteristics of patients in the Sertraline Pediatric RegIstry for The Evaluation of Safety (SPRITES). Methods SPRITES is an open-label postmarketing study of development and safety outcomes in patients aged 6 to 16 years treated with sertraline (with or without psychotherapy) compared with psychotherapy alone for up to 3 years in the United States. Baseline data included demographics and psychiatric history. Primary outcomes included measures of cognitive and emotional development (Trails B, Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function [BRIEF]), physical development (height and weight), and pubertal status (Tanner Stage). Data were also collected on present/lifetime risk of suicide-related events using the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale. Results SPRITES enrolled 941 patients between the ages of 6 and 16 years. Patients' baseline mean age was 11.9 years (2.9), 57.2% were female, and 84.8% were white. Most patients (78.4%) had an anxiety disordelogical treatment (5.8% vs. 2.5%, p = 0.039). Conclusions Baseline data from this nonrandomized observational study suggest that patients prescribed sertraline are reflective of a more mentally ill study population compared with patients receiving psychotherapy. ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT01302080.The prevalence of Salmonella serovar 1,4,[5],12i- among diarrhea patients has increased considerably in many countries around the world, including China. However, the characterization of this serovar of human origin has been less reported from China. We characterized 76 isolates of Salmonella 1,4,[5],12i- gained from diarrhea patients from 2014 to 2018 in the Jiangsu Province of eastern China. These isolates fell into a single-sequence type (ST34) determined by multilocus sequence typing (MLST), and into 44 pulsed-field gel electrophoresis band patterns, with 1 pattern (JSSMM015) comprising 12 isolates (15.9%). By means of PCR-based assays, the seven prophage located virulence genes were detected in our Salmonella 1,4,[5],12i- isolates with a high rate of gipA, gtgB, sspH1, sspH2, sodC1, and gtgE (93.4-97.4%), and with a moderate rate of sopE (42.1%). In contrast, none of the five plasmid-borne virulence genes (spvC, pefA, mig5, rck, and srgA) was identified. We tested the isolates' susceptibility to 18 antib worldwide. Objective MicroRNA-424 (MiR-424) is proved to be a tumor suppressor against many malignancies, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Nevertheless, its role in diagnosing HCC remained poorly understood. The authors' research investigated diagnostic value of serum miR-424 in HCC. Materials and Methods Relative expression levels of serum miR-424 in HCC patients and healthy individuals were measured via quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. χ2 test was applied to analyze the correlation between miR-424 expression and clinical features of HCC cases. Diagnostic value was estimated via plotting a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results Serum miR-424 expression was obviously downregulated in HCC cases in comparison to healthy persons (p less then 0.001). miR-424 expression presented strong correlation with tumor node metastasis stage (p = 0.022), Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage (p less then 0.001), metastasis (p = 0.037), and vein invasion (p = 0.033). ROC curve analysis manifested an area under the curve of 0.768 with a sensitivity of 75.0% and a specificity of 72.4%, suggesting that serum miR-424 had high diagnostic value in HCC patients. Conclusions The data suggest that serum miR-424 may represent a biomarker in early detection of HCC.
