In recent years, a significant increase of reports about suicidal cases due to intentional sodium nitrite intake has been described. In the forensic pathology context, the strategy to approach intoxication cases by sodium nitrite, without any preliminary information or hint, is not straightforward. Indeed, in a number of cases the lack of crime scene data and/or specific pathological signs makes difficult the identification of nitrite poisoning. selleck kinase inhibitor Moreover, the analytical determination of nitrite in blood is challenging, due to its rapid oxidization to nitrate by hemoglobin. Although several methods have been proposed for the clinical analysis of nitrate and/or nitrite in biological samples, none of these is specifically focused on the determination of these ions in cadaveric samples. Consequently, the diagnosis of nitrite fatal intoxication is still based on methemoglobin analysis. The present paper reports the optimization and validation of an analytical method of capillary ion analysis (CIA) with UV detectioa new tool for the direct and rapid determination of nitrite and nitrate in cases of forensic interest, and thus offers a diagnostic tool more sensitive and precise than the need methemoglobin analysis.Condom evidence has become in the past years a very relevant item of evidence in sexual assault or rape cases, being an objective help in the reconstruction of the activity. Traces recovered from a vaginal swab might help to identify whether a condom or other lubricants were used, and thereby possibly confirming or infirming allegations of the parties. However, the interpretation of condom traces can be challenging and requires a detailed understanding of various factors like condom lubricant chemical composition and occurrence on the market, transfer and persistence parameters and background. Herein, we aimed at improving our understanding of factors affecting the transfer variability of condom residues recovered from vaginal matrix. This work employed Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) to provide new data for a characterization of condom lubricants and their traces after a transfer in a vaginal matrix has occurred. Condom traces were recovered from volunteers and the traces characteristics were investigated and analyzed. The effects of donor (condom) and receiver (vaginal matrix) were firstly evaluated, as they are known factors, and these data that could be obtained in real caseworks. Using principal component analysis (PCA), this study highlighted that the effect of the donor was more important than the receiver effect. Vaginal matrix residues were not detected in transferred extracts. The discrimination pattern amongst the donor was found to be indistinguishable from the one obtained on reference material using ATR-FTIR (Attenuated Total Reflectance).Being able to identify the author of an anonymous or disputed document is an important task in forensic science. This can be treated as a form of pattern evidence based on writing style, but the subjective analysis of writing style may have all the well-known problems of other forms of subjective pattern evidence. In this paper, we demonstrate a computer program to address these issues. This program analyzes a pair of documents (a known document and a questioned document) to determine if they were written by the same author. More importantly, this paper also validates the accuracy of this program through a large-scale series of controlled experiments involving English language blogs. Across more than 32,000 different document pairs, the system achieved a measured accuracy of 77%. This paper concludes that this system not only addresses a key problem in forensic linguistics, but also provides the repeatability, reproducibility, and measured accuracy levels that are key to the advancement of forensic science.Microbial Whole-Cell Biosensors (MWCBs) have seen rapid development with the arrival of 21st century biological and technological capabilities. They consist of microbial species which produce, or limit the production of, a reporter protein in the presence of a target analyte. The quantifiable signal from the reporter protein can be used to determine the bioavailable levels of the target analyte in a variety of sample types at a significantly lower cost than most widely used and well-established analytical instrumentation. Furthermore, the versatile and robust nature of MWCBs shows great potential for their use in otherwise unavailable settings and environments. While MWCBs have been developed for use in biomedical, environmental, and agricultural monitoring, they still face various challenges before they can transition from the laboratory into industrialized settings like their enzyme-based counterparts. In this comprehensive and critical review, we describe the underlying working principles of MWCBs, highlight developments for their use in a variety of fields, detail challenges and current efforts to address them, and discuss exciting implementations of MWCBs helping redefine what is thought to be possible with this expeditiously evolving technology.
Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI), an extension of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), is a powerful tool for studying human brain. The purpose is to investigate differences between DKI and DTI by comparing parameters in same analysis methods with bipolar disorder (BD) patients.
In this study, we attained in 47 BD patients and 49 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls, complimented DTI and DKI scanning and got Fractional Anisotropy (FA), Mean Diffusion (MD) and Mean Kurtosis (MK). Voxel-wise statistical analysis was performed by the tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) analysis and atlas-based regional data analysis.
TBSS analysis showed more widespread regions and higher fidelity in DKI parameters than DTI parameters with the same p-value threshold, and DKI parameters showed significant alterations after Family-Wise Error correction. The DKI-FA value in the corpus callosum, bilateral cingulum (cingulate gyrus), bilateral superior corona radiata, left anterior corona radiata and left posterior corona radiata of BD patients was negatively correlated with the duration of illness.
