However, the role of genetic factors that influence the clinical features of MS remains unclear. We investigated the correlation between 21 single nucleotide polymorphisms within three genes (IL7R, LAG3, and CD40) and MS clinical characteristics in the Jordanian population. Blood samples and clinical phenotypic data were collected from 218 Arab Jordanian MS patients, vitamin D was measured, genomic DNA was extracted, and genotyping of the candidate genes' polymorphisms were analyzed using the Sequenom MassARRAY® system. The association of these single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with MS was performed using a Chi-square, Fisher exact test, and one-way ANOVA. We found a significant association between vitamin D deficiency and three SNPs of the IL7R gene, namely rs987107 (P-value = 0.047), rs3194051 (P-value = 0.03), and rs1494571 (P-value = 0.036), in addition to two SNPs of CD40, namely rs1883832 and rs6074022 (P-value = 0.049 for both). rs3194051 of the IL7R gene (P-value = 0.003) and rs1922452 of the LAG3 gene (P-value = 0.028) were strongly associated with comorbidity. The number of relapses before drug onset was found to be correlated with IL7R SNPs rs969128 (P-value = 0.04) and rs1494555 (P-value = 0.027), whereas the expanded disability status scale (EDSS) was associated with rs1494555 polymorphism of IL7R gene (P-value = 0.026). Current findings indicate important correlations between certain SNPs and the risk of various phenotypes of multiple sclerosis in the Jordanian community. Therefore, this will not only contribute to the understanding of MS, but will also assist with the development of personalized treatment procedures.An insect's ability to tolerate winter conditions is a critical determinant of its success. This is true for both native and invasive species, and especially so in harsh polar environments. The midge Eretmoptera murphyi (Diptera, Chironomidae) is invasive to maritime Antarctic Signy Island, and the ability of fourth instar larvae to tolerate freezing is hypothesized to allow the species to extend its range further south. However, no detailed assessment of stress tolerance in any other life stage has yet been conducted. Here, we report that, although larvae, pupae and adults all have supercooling points (SCPs) of around -5 °C, only the larvae are freeze-tolerant, and that cold-hardiness increases with larval maturity. Eggs are freeze-avoiding and have an SCP of around -17 °C. At -3.34 °C, the CTmin activity thresholds of adults are close to their SCP of -5 °C, and they are likely chill-susceptible. Larvae could not withstand the anoxic conditions of ice entrapment or submergence in water beyond 28 d. The data obtained here indicate that the cold-tolerance characteristics of this invasive midge would permit it to colonize areas further south, including much of the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.The exposure of adult children to inter-parental violence is an indirect form of victimization which has not been widely investigated in relation to its consequences in adulthood. The main goal of this study was to analyze predictors of dating violence based on an integrated model of intergenerational transmission of violence with the assessment of potential indirect effects of inter-parental violence exposure on dating violence through child-to-parent violence and sexism. A total of 847 college students participated in this study, ranging from 18 to 25 years of age. Inter-parental violence exposure plays a relevant role in dating violence, with indirect effects through child-to-parent violence and sexism. These results support social learning theory in explaining the intergenerational transmission of violence and indicate that further attention should be paid to children exposed to inter-parental violence. Intervention models to prevent the perpetration of dating violence should include the prevention of inter-parental violence exposure and child-to-parent violence.Low health literacy is an issue with high prevalence in the UK and internationally. It has a social gradient with higher prevalence in lower social groups and is linked with higher rates of long-term health conditions, lower self-rated health, and greater difficulty self-managing long-term health conditions. Improved medical services and practitioner awareness of a patient's health literacy can help to address these issues. An intervention was developed to improve General Practitioner and Practice Nurse health literacy skills and practice. A feasibility study was undertaken to examine and improve the elements of the intervention. Suggested improvements to the training included more information on health literacy and how the clinical alerts were generated, and more practical role playing including initiating discussions on health literacy with patients. It was suggested that the wording of the clinical alert be improved to emphasise its purpose in improving practitioner skills. The feasibility study improved the intervention, increasing its potential usefulness and acceptability in clinical practice. Future studies will explore the impact on clinical care through a pilot and a randomised controlled trial.Irrigation projects in sub-Saharan Africa are mostly unsustainable because of lack of maintenance by their users or government planners. By contrast, evidence shows that the smallholder farmers are developing and expanding the irrigated land, using their initiatives. Farmer-led irrigation, a revolutionary agricultural intensification approach, is already in progress with the magnitude to significantly transform the living standards of smallholder farmers. However, a rigorous assessment of its impact on household welfare to ascertain this is lacking. This paper bridges this gap by assessing factors influencing the adoption of this particular approach as well as its effects on the farmers' per capita net crop income. Our data set consists of 608 smallholder farmers in Southern Tanzania and used propensity score matching to estimate the effects of adoption on the per capita net crop income. Our results indicate that the uptake of farmer-led irrigation practices is influenced by drought experience, water user group membership, farmer organization membership, and government extension, as well as the sex of the household head.
