Defensive Aftereffect of Sundakai (Solanum torvum) Seeds Proteins (SP) Towards Oxidative Membrane layer Damage inside Individual Erythrocytes.
As a result, the initial resistance was reduced further by the formation of shrinking passivation layers cured at higher temperatures, and reduced to 0.45 times when the curing temperature was 120 °C. The cyclic tensile and washing tests confirmed a 0.48 and a 0.011 times reduction of resistance change rate after the 100th elongation cycle (10% in elongation rate) and the 10th washing cycle, respectively, by comparing the samples with and without shrinking passivation layers cured at 120 °C.We have read with interest the recent paper by Posovszky and Roesler et al [1] that reports, based on the doctoral thesis by Dr. Roesler [2] [...].Cell phones, smartphones, and tablets are extensively used in social and professional life, so they are frequently exposed to bacteria. The main goal of the present work was to isolate and characterize Staphylococci strains from students' cell phone mobiles. Subsequently, 24 Staphylococci strains were tested against a wide range of antibiotics, for the distribution of some virulence-related genes and their ability to form biofilm. Staphylococcus spp. were cultured from all studied devices on chromogenic medium and identified using the matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI), time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) technique (MALDI-TOF-MS). The results obtained showed that S. aureus was the dominant species (19 strains, 79.1%), followed by S. warneri (3 strains, 12.5%), and S. haemolyticus (2 strains, 8.3%). Isolated strains showed high percentages of hydrolytic enzymes production, resistance to many tested antibiotics, and 37.5% expressed the mecA gene. The tested strains were highly adhesive to polystyrene and glass and expressed implicated icaA (62.5%) and icaD (66.6%) genes. All Staphylococcus spp. strains tested were found to possess proteases and the α-hemolysin gene. Our results highlighted the importance of mobile phones as a great source of Staphylococcus spp., and these species were found to be resistant to many antibiotics with multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) index ranging from (0.444) to (0.812). Most of the studied strains are able to form biofilm and expressed many virulence genes. Phylogenetic analysis based on the phenotypic and genetic characters highlighted the phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity of the S. aureus population studied. Further analyses are needed to elucidate the human health risks associated with the identified Staphylococci strains. Background Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common bacterial infections among kidney transplant (KTX) recipients. The purpose of this study was to analyze antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in four most common pathogens responsible for UTIs in KTX recipients and determine risk factors (RF) for resistance in the same group. Methods Analyzed antibiograms were based on urine samples positive for bacterial growth of 105 colony-forming units (CFU)/mL obtained from hospitalized adult KTX recipients presenting with UTI symptoms upon admission to the center in years 2011-2018. Results In total, 783 antibiograms were analyzed for Klebsiella pneumoniae (258 samples, 33.0%), Escherichia coli (212, 27.0%), Enterococcus faecalis (128, 24.0%), and Enterococcus faecium (125, 16.0%). The decrease in susceptibility of E. coli to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (62.9% vs. 40.0%) and ciprofloxacin (100% to 40.0%) was observed. Susceptibility to gentamicin increased from 33.3% to 92.9% in E. faecium. Susceptibility to tigecycroorganisms as etiology and susceptibility may vary between institutions and over time.(1) Background This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Condom Use Self-Efficacy Scale among Colombian youth. WP1130 (2) Method A total of 2873 men and women between 18 and 26 years old (M = 21.45, SD = 2.26) took part in this study. All participants answered a socio-demographic survey, the Condom Use Self-Efficacy Scale, the UCLA Multidimensional Condom Attitudes Scale, The Condom Use Errors and Problems Scale, and the Sexual Assertiveness Scale. Sampling was web-based, and the survey was distributed via Facebook. (3) Results The Condom Use Self-Efficacy Scale demonstrated adequate reliability (ordinal α ranged = 0.76 to 0.92). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis suggested a four-factor structure with an explained variance of 69%. This dimensionality was also invariant across gender. Moreover, positive attitudes toward condom use were significantly associated with appropriation and assertiveness. Two dimensions (appropriation and partner disapproval) showed significant gender differences. (4) Conclusions The Spanish-Colombian version of the Condom Use Self-Efficacy Scale is a psychometrically adequate instrument to measure perceived condom use self-efficacy. This scale can be used in both research and professional settings to measure self-efficacy at using condoms in young people. The development and progression of osteoarthritis (OA) is associated with macrophage-mediated inflammation that generates a broad spectrum of cytokines and reactive oxygen species (ROS). This study investigates the effects of mid-MW hyaluronic acid (HA) in combination with a lactose-modified chitosan (CTL), on pro-inflammatory molecules and metalloproteinases (MMPs) expression, using an in vitro model of macrophage-mediated inflammation. Methods To assess chondrocyte response to HA and CTL in the presence of macrophage derived inflammatory mediators, cells were exposed to the conditioned medium (CM) of U937 activated monocytes and changes in cell viability, pro-inflammatory mediators and MMPs expression or ROS generation were analysed. Results CTL induced changes in chondrocyte viability that are reduced by the presence of HA. The CM of activated U937 monocytes (macrophages) significantly increased gene expression of pro-inflammatory molecules and MMPs and intracellular ROS generation in human chondrocyte cultures. HA, CTL and their combinations counteracted the oxidative damage and restored gene transcription for IL-1β, TNF-α, Gal-1, MMP-3 and MMP-13 to near baseline values. Conclusions This study suggests that HA-CTL mixture attenuated macrophage-induced inflammation, inhibited MMPs expression and exhibited anti-oxidative effects. This evidence provides an initial step toward the development of an early stage OA therapeutic treatment.
