ct Himalayan red muntjac (M. aureus) within the red muntjac group from Northwestern India that should be managed as an Evolutionary Significant Unit (ESU). We recommend a reassessment of the conservation status of red muntjacs for effective conservation and management.
Viruses cause significant economic losses to shrimp aquaculture worldwide. In severe cases, they can lead to 100% mortality within a matter of days, hence the aquaculture industry requires antiviral strategies to minimize economic impacts. Currently, a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)-based platform has been proven effective at a laboratory scale. The bottleneck for its industrialization is the lack of low-cost, efficient and practical delivery approaches. In an effort to bridge the gap between laboratory and farm applications, virus-like particles (VLP) have been used as nanocarriers of dsRNA. However, the implementation of this approach still suffers from high costs and a lengthy procedure, co-expression of subunits of VLP or capsid proteins (CPs) and dsRNA can be the solution for the problem. CP and dsRNA are traditionally expressed in two different E. coli hosts protease-deficient and RNase III-deficient strains. To condense the manufacturing of dsRNA-containing VLP, this study constructed a novel E. coli strain that is able to co-express viral capsid proteins and dsRNA in the same E. coli cell.
A novel bacterial strain DualX-B15(DE3) was engineered to be both protease- and RNase III-deficiency via P1 phage transduction. The results revealed that it could simultaneously express recombinant proteins and dsRNA.
Co-expression of viral capsid proteins and dsRNA in the same cell has been shown to be feasible. Not only could this platform serve as a basis for future cost-effective and streamlined production of shrimp antiviral therapeutics, it may be applicable for other applications that requires co-expression of recombinant proteins and dsRNA.

MetS is a cluster of conditions characterized by insulin resistance, hypertension, obesity, and cardiovascular-related risk factors. Various aspects, such as modern lifestyle (diet, sedentary behavior), aging and genes attribute to increasing the morbidity of MetS. Telaglenastat While external interventions, prescribed drugs and natural materials play an indispensable role in the management of MetS. Intake of plant-based bioactive compounds and peptide-based drug delivery systems emerge as safe and effective pharmacological approaches to treat MetS complications. Natural biomaterials are able to decrease the adverse effects of drugs and enhance treatment efficiency. In this thematic issue, we explored the beneficial effects of various phytochemicals, marine drugs and cellpenetrating peptides (CPPs)-mediated drug delivery system in the management of MetS and associated disorders. The usage of CPPs in combination with other therapeutic agents like nanoparticles and peptides is a novel and efficient approach to conquer the components in MetS.Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a dermatological condition characterized by ruptured hair follicles inducing a localized, but massive chronic inflammatory response. Analysis of 104 HS lesions in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues identified the most common histologic features found associated with HS were migrating epithelial sheets, acute and chronic inflammation, perivascular chronic inflammation in regions adjacent to active lesions, and granulation tissue. Additionally, using a modified Masson's trichrome stain principally for collagen, Verhoeff van Gieson elastic stain, and CD34 immunohistochemistry assay for endothelium, lesional areas in the dermis with chronic inflammation exhibited a significant decrease in collagen and elastin, and an increase in neovascularization.
Healthcare professionals have been treating patients with COVID-19 since the pandemic started in early 2020 while also trying to limit disease spread among their coworkers and communities. This study aimed to identify and follow potentially infected healthcare workers in one hospital in order to develop an epidemiological baseline for COVID-19 infection and spread rates in this population.
This prospective study was conducted between 1 April and 30 June 2020 at a single Belgian hospital. Healthcare workers with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 were included. Participants underwent testing for SARS-CoV-2 infection by nasopharyngeal (NP) swab and analysis of blood samples for antibody response at different timepoints (day 0, 7, 14 and day 30 or 60). Patient exposures, symptoms, and disease progression were collected.
Of a total of 150 healthcare workers with symptoms compatible with SARS-CoV-2 infection, 31% (47) tested positive for the virus by NP swab. Of the 47 participants with positive NP swabs, 66% also had positive IgG serology. Of the 99 participants with negative NP swabs who underwent blood sample collection, 5% had positive IgG serology results. Of the 29 participants who presented with at least 3 major symptoms, 15 (52%) had positive NP swabs and 14 (48%) had positive serology.
This study demonstrates that evidence of symptoms, even when major, is a poor predictor for SARS-CoV-2 positivity in health care workers and raises the question of the best way to efficiently screen this population especially during the upcoming flu period.
