To describe the toxicology of suicide cases recorded in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, from 2017 to 2019.

The present descriptive, cross-sectional study examined all the medico-legal reports and police records related to suicide deaths in the state. Multiple correspondence analyses were performed along with independent logistic regression models having ethanol, anxiolytic and antidepressant drugs, illicit drugs, and non-medical substances as dependent variables.

Ethanol was investigated in 2 978 samples, with positive results in 28.5%. The odds of a positive ethanol finding were 0.5 time higher (95%CI 1.1; 2.2) for suicides occurring at night, 1.0 (95%CI 1.4; 2.9) time higher for suicides occurring on weekends, and 0.9 (95%CI 1.3; 2.7) time higher in individuals with a prior criminal record. Investigation of psychotropic drugs (2 900 samples) was positive in 30.4% samples. Anxiolytics were the most common medication detected, with 1.5 (95%CI 1.6; 4.1) time higher odds of occurrence in women and 0.8 time higher odds (95%CI 1.2; 2.7) for suicides occurring in the fall-winter. The odds of detecting illicit drugs (n = 338) were 4.1 times higher (95%CI 1.9; 14.4) in the regions of Pelotas (south of the state) vs. Passo Fundo (north), and 1.2 (95%CI 1.3; 3.6) time higher in cases with positive ethanol results, without significant difference between adolescents and adults.

Despite the lack of evidence on causality, the present results support a link between suicide and several psychoactive drugs. Medico-legal experts should be guided regarding the need to perform toxicological tests in all suicide cases.

To identify factors associated with chronic kidney disease of non-traditional causes among children in Guatemala.

A cross-sectional survey was conducted. The study population was all pediatric patients with stage 5 chronic kidney disease active in FUNDANIER's pediatric nephrology unit (
= 156). Simple random sampling led to a total of 100 participants. Data collection consisted of a questionnaire addressing individual and household characteristics, access and utilization of health care, and place of residence when the disease began. Chronic kidney disease etiology was obtained from medical records. Municipality-level secondary data were collected. Descriptive statistics were estimated. Logistic regression was used for bivariate and multivariate analysis.

The odds ratio (OR) for almost all variables approached 1. Notable exceptions in household characteristics were mother's education level up to primary school (OR 2.2727) and living in an urban setting when symptoms began (OR 0.4035). A comprehensive search and review of the legislation in effect as of March 2019, collected through existing Pan American Health Organization and World Health Organization monitoring tools, secondary sources, and surveying ministries of finance. The analysis focused on the type of products taxed, and the structure and base of these excise taxes.

Out of the 33 countries analyzed, 21 apply excise taxes on SSBs. Seven countries also apply excise taxes on bottled water and at least four include sugar-sweetened milk drinks. Ten of these excise taxes are ad valorem with some tax bases set early in the value chain, seven are amount-specific, and four have either a combined or mixed structure. Three countries apply excise taxes based on sugar concentration.

As of January 2020, there were 2,519 confirmed Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) cases with 866 deaths across 27 countries. Most of these cases (2,121) were reported in KSA. Since the initial identification of MERS, few studies have investigated the role of comorbidities that could potentially lead to mortality in cases of the infectious disease. This study aimed to examine the association between comorbidities and MERS mortality in KSA.

This is a retrospective descriptive study. We retrieved the data published by the World Health Organization (WHO) between January 2017 and November 2019, and analysed the association between comorbidities and mortality.

Limited care services available during the pandemic, social-distancing, increased unemployment and competing care needs within households (e.g. due to school closures) may have changed the prevalence and intensity of informal caregiving. Moreover, these changes may have increased the psychological strain experienced by caregivers. Focusing on Austria, this study aims to empirically analyse the following research questions how have the prevalence and intensity of informal care changed due to the pandemic? How has the psychological well-being of informal caregivers been affected? We use a pre- and post-onset of the pandemic research design based on a representative survey carried out in Austria in June 2020 (N = 2000) in combination with comparable 2015 data from the European Social Survey.
