In this study, we report a surfactant-mediated synthesis of ferrites (MFe2O4 M = Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) using the co-precipitation-oxidation method. The band gap calculated from UV-Visible diffuse reflectance spectra were found in the range of 1.11-1.81 eV. These ferrite nanocatalysts were studied for the photocatalytic degradation of multiple organic dyes in a 32 W UV-C/H2O2 system. All the four ferrites showed an excellent dye degradation rate in the range of 2.065-2.417 min-1 at neutral pH. In the optimized condition, NiF was found to degrade 89%, 92%, 93%, and 78% of methylene blue, methyl orange, bromo green, and methyl red, respectively within 1 min of UV-irradiation. A 40% TOC removal was recorded after 5 min of degradation reaction, which increased to 60% after 50 min. Mechanism elucidated by scavenger studies and fluorescence spectroscopy revealed that •OH and holes were the primary reactive radicals responsible for the degradation process. Ferrite photocatalysts showed an insignificant performance loss in seven consecutive cycles. The photocatalyst was found efficient in the presence of a high concentration of salts. Thus, it was concluded that these photocatalysts are highly suitable for the remediation of dye-contaminated wastewater.Acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation is a major indicator of intensive care unit (ICU) admissions in cirrhotic patients and is an independent risk factor for ICU mortality. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the outcome and mortality risk factors in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) who required prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) between 2006 and 2013 from two databases Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) and a hospital database. The hospital database yielded 58 LC patients (mean age 65.3 years; men 65.5%). The in-hospital mortality was significantly higher than in patients without LC. The mortality was higher in patients with LC (19.5%) than those without LC (18.12%), though not statistically significant (p = 0.0622). Based on the hospital database, risk factor analysis revealed that patients who died had significant higher MELD score than the survivors (18.9 vs 13.7, p = 0.036) and patients with MELD score of >23 had higher risk of mortality than patients with MELD score of ≤23 (adjusted OR9.26, 95% CI 1.96-43.8). In conclusion, the in-hospital mortality of patients with high MELD scores who required PMV was high. MELD scores may be useful predictors of mortality in these patients.Thyroid nodules are initially handled by fine needle aspiration (FNA). However, the stance of thyroid core needle biopsy (CNB) still is a challenge. This study aimed to compare the diagnostic performances and conclusive rates of FNA and CNB for the diagnosis of thyroid nodules and to define effective indications of CNB. This retrospective study enrolled 1,060 consecutive thyroid nodules in 1,037 patients who underwent FNA from January 2008 to May 2008, and 462 consecutive nodules in 453 patients who underwent CNB from January 2014 to December 2015 at our institution. Ultrasound (US) features were classified according to the American College of Radiology Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (ACR TI-RADS) and Korean TIRADS (K-TIRADS). We compared diagnostic performances and conclusive rates between FNA and CNB groups. Propensity score matching was conducted to match FNA patients with CNB patients. After matching, the diagnostic performances for selecting surgical candidates and predicting malignancy were comparable between the two biopsy groups. Based on US findings, conclusive results were obtained significantly more in CNB than in FNA when thyroid nodules were classified as ACR TI-RADS or K-TIRADS category 4 and measured larger than 2 cm. Diagnostic performances between FNA and CNB were comparable. Superiority of CNB to FNA was found for thyroid nodules larger than 2 cm and classified as ACR TI-RADS or K-TIRADS category 4.Land-use intensification on arable land is expanding and posing a threat to biodiversity and ecosystem services worldwide. We develop methods to link funding for avian breeding habitat conservation and management at landscape scales to equilibrium abundance of a migratory species at the continental scale. We apply this novel approach to a harvested bird valued by birders and hunters in North America, the northern pintail duck (Anas acuta), a species well below its population goal. Based on empirical observations from 2007-2016, habitat conservation investments for waterfowl cost $313 M and affected less then 2% of the pintail's primary breeding area in the Prairie Pothole Region of Canada. Realistic scenarios for harvest and habitat conservation costing an estimated $588 M (2016 USD) led to predicted pintail population sizes less then 3 M when assuming average parameter values. Accounting for parameter uncertainty, converting 70-100% of these croplands to idle grassland (cost $35.7B-50B) is required to achieve the continental population goal of 4 M individuals under the current harvest policy. Using our work as a starting point, we propose continued development of modeling approaches that link conservation funding, habitat delivery, and population response to better integrate conservation efforts and harvest management of economically important migratory species.Enamel is secreted by ameloblasts derived from tooth epithelial stem cells (SCs). Humans cannot repair or regenerate enamel, due to early loss of tooth epithelial SCs. Contrarily in the mouse incisors, epithelial SCs are maintained throughout life and endlessly generate ameloblasts, and thus enamel. Here we isolated Sox2-GFP+ tooth epithelial SCs which generated highly cellular spheres following a novel in vitro strategy. This system enabled analysis of SC regulation by various signaling molecules, and supported the stimulatory and inhibitory roles of Shh and Bmp, respectively; providing better insight into the heterogeneity of the SCs. Further, we generated a novel mouse reporter, Enamelin-tdTomato for identification of ameloblasts in live tissues and cells, and used it to demonstrate presence of ameloblasts in the new 3D co-culture system of dental SCs. Collectively, our results provide means of generating 3D tooth epithelium from adult SCs which can be utilized toward future generation of enamel.
