The passive behavior of a compliant biped walking model, subject to variations in its design, is investigated. A biped gait model is developed that allows for studying the effects of leg impedance, geometry, foot curvature, and inertial properties on the stable gait performed passively. A set of nondimensional parameters has been produced that fully defines the compass gait behavior, eliminating the dependence of our results on scale. Models emerging from parameter combinations were tested on their ability to perform stable passive walking on slope, and the characteristics of the gait performed in each case were recorded. Investigation of parameter ranges allowed us to draw relationships between various gait characteristics and specific, nondimensional parameter selections. By mapping the changes in system behavior under simple design variations, this work facilitates the selection of design parameters at an early stage of designing bionic walking equipment, including prostheses and exoskeletons.
The assumption that improved self-care in the setting of heart failure (HF) care necessarily translates into improvements in long-term mortality and/or hospitalization is not well established. We aimed to study the association between self-care and long-term mortality and other major adverse HF events (MAHFE).

We conducted an observational, prospective, cohort study of 1123 consecutive patients with chronic HF. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality. We used the European Heart Failure Self-care Behaviour Scale 9-item version (EHFSCBS-9) to measure global self-care (overall score) and three specific dimensions of self-care including autonomy-based adherence, consulting behaviour and provider-based adherence. After a mean follow-up of 3.3 years, all-cause death occurred in 487 patients (43%). In adjusted analysis, higher EHFScBS-9 scores (better self-care) at baseline were associated with lower risk of all-cause death [hazard ratio (HR) 0.993, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.988-0.997), P-value = 0.00 mortality (both, all-cause and CV), HF hospitalization, and the combinations of these endpoints in patients with chronic HF. Important dimensions of self-care such as autonomy-based adherence and consulting behaviour also determine the risk of all these outcomes in the long term.Rotator cuff (RC) tears cause pain and functional disability of the shoulder. Despite advances in suture anchors, there are still reports about the incidence of surgical-related injuries to RC mainly associated with sutures. The purpose of this study was to design and evaluate the mechanical behavior of sutureless implants to repair RC tears. We hypothesized that the implants present mechanical characteristics suitable for the surgical treatment of RC tears as suture anchors. Three different implants (T1, T2, T3) were designed and fabricated with titanium T1 has two rods and rectangular head; T2 has two rods with a small opening and enlarged rectangular head; and T3 has three rods and a circular head. The implants were fixed in rigid polyurethane foam blocks by a series of blows, and the applied mechanical loads along with the number of blows were quantified. Pullout tests using tapes fixed between the implant head and testing machine grip were conducted until implant failure. The maximum pullout strength and displacement of the implant relative to the rigid foam block were computed. Statistical significance was set at p  less then  0.05. Owing to its geometric configuration, implant T2 presented the best characteristics related to stability, strength, and ease of insertion. Implant T2 confirms our hypothesis that its mechanical behavior is compatible with that of suture anchors, which could lead to the reduction of RC repair failures and simplify the arthroscopic procedure.Cartilage defects are common in the knee joint of active athletes and remain a problem as a strong risk factor for osteoarthritis. We hypothesized that landing during sport activities, implication for subfailure ACL loading, would generate greater contact pressures (CP) at the lateral knee compartment. The purpose of this study is to investigate tibiofemoral cartilage CP of athletes during landing. Tibiofemoral cartilage contact pressures (TCCP) under clinically relevant anterior cruciate ligament subfailure external loadings were predicted using four dynamic explicit finite element (FE) models (2 males and 2 females) of the knee. Bipedal landing from a jump for five cases of varying magnitudes of external loadings (knee abduction moment, internal tibial torque, and anterior tibial shear) followed by an impact load were simulated. Lateral TCCP from meniscus (area under meniscus) and from femur (area under femur) increased by up to 94% and %30 respectively when external loads were incorporated with impact load in all the models compared to impact-only case. In addition, FE model predicted higher CP in lateral compartment by up to 37% (11.87 MPa versus 8.67 MPa) and 52% (20.19 MPa versus 13.29 MPa) for 90% and 50% percentile models, respectively. For the same percentile populations, CPs were higher by up to 25% and 82% in smaller size models than larger size models. We showed that subfailure ACL loadings obtained from previously conducted in vivo study led to high pressures on the tibiofemoral cartilage. In the IF group, food was withdrawn daily from 1700 to 0900 over 21 days of gestation, while the control group received food ad libitum. Both groups had free water access.
