In addition to revealing a novel mechanism for the importin-mediated regulation of a cortical protein, we also show how importin-binding positively regulates protein function.Objective This study aimed to survey periodontal status of Vietnamese patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and investigates the association between periodontitis and RA in these patients.Materials and methods We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study on 150 RA patients and another 150 patients with osteoarthritis (OA). RA was evaluated using the DAS28 disease activity score based on C-reactive protein levels (DAS28-CRP), disease activity classification, and serum levels of RA biomarkers. Periodontal status was determined using periodontal indices.Results The proportion of periodontitis cases in the RA group was significantly higher than the OA group (67 and 28%, respectively). The rate of severe periodontitis observed in the RA group was also significantly higher than that in the OA group (22.7 and 8%, respectively). RA patients with periodontitis had higher DAS28-CRP scores, disease activity levels, ACPA positivity and higher serum levels of CRP and ACPAs. Periodontitis is associated with an increased risk for RA (odds ratio [OR] 5.14, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.14 - 8.41) and with higher disease activity classification (OR 2.7, 95% CI 1.14 - 6.42).Conclusions Vietnamese RA patients often presented with a more serious periodontal condition than OA patients. We observed an association between periodontal disease (PD) status and clinic symptoms and biochemical/immunological characteristics of RA.Introduction The placenta is infrequently examined in developing countries. This study examined the role of placental pathology in perinatal deaths at Chulalongkorn University Hospital, Bangkok. Methods Included were singleton intrauterine deaths after gestational week 20 and live-born infants up to 1 week old, over a 15-year period. Placental lesions were classified as inflammatory-immune, maternal stromal-vascular, fetal stromal-vascular, umbilical cord complications and other. Results 208 such cases had the placenta available. A placental cause of death was found in 96 (46%), non-placental causes in 28% and the cause of death was unknown in 26%. Of those 96 placentas, 44% were categorized as inflammatory-immune, 30% maternal stromal-vascular, 13% fetal stromal-vascular, 7% umbilical cord complications and 6% other. Conclusions Placental causes of death were less common than in many Western studies, but inflammatory-immune processes more common. These differences may relate to how cases were accrued, and/or local socioeconomic factors, and warrant further study.Recent outbreak of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic around the world is associated with 'severe acute respiratory syndrome' (SARS-CoV2) in humans. SARS-CoV2 is an enveloped virus and E proteins present in them are reported to form ion channels, which is mainly associated with pathogenesis. Thus, there is always a quest to inhibit these ion channels, which in turn may help in controlling diseases caused by SARS-CoV2 in humans. Considering this, in the present study, authors employed computational approaches for studying the structure as well as function of the human 'SARS-CoV2 E' protein as well as its interaction with various phytochemicals. Result obtained revealed that α-helix and loops present in this protein experience random movement under optimal condition, which in turn modulate ion channel activity; thereby aiding the pathogenesis caused via SARS-CoV2 in human and other vertebrates. However, after binding with Belachinal, Macaflavanone E, and Vibsanol B, the random motion of the human 'SARS-CoV2 E' protein gets reduced, this, in turn, inhibits the function of the 'SARS-CoV2 E' protein. It is pertinent to note that two amino acids, namely VAL25 and PHE26, play a key role while interacting with these three phytochemicals. Sarma.Atherosclerosis is a systemic inflammatory disease typified by the development of lipid-rich atheroma (plaques), the rupture of which are a major cause of myocardial infarction and stroke. Anatomical evaluation of the plaque considering only the degree of luminal stenosis overlooks features associated with vulnerable plaques, such as high-risk morphological features or pathophysiology, and hence risks missing vulnerable or ruptured non-stenotic plaques. Consequently, there has been interest in identifying these markers of vulnerability using either MRI for morphology, or positron emission tomography (PET) for physiological processes involved in atherogenesis. The advent of hybrid PET/MRI scanners offers the potential to combine the strengths of PET and MRI to allow comprehensive assessment of the atherosclerotic plaque. This review will discuss the principles and technical aspects of hybrid PET/MRI assessment of atherosclerosis, and consider how combining the complementary modalities of PET and MRI has already furthered our understanding of atherogenesis, advanced drug development, and how it may hold potential for clinical application.
