Stressors such as safety culture in organizations that increase the risk of burnout have been studied in nursing and inpatient care settings. However, investigations in the setting of preclinical emergency medical services (EMS) are still limited. The study aims at (1) investigating burnout in health care workers in preclinical EMS and their perceived safety culture, and (2) analyzing the association between the two.

Using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Emergency Medical Services - Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (EMS-SAQ), an online survey was conducted with non-medical health care workers in preclinical EMS. Descriptive analyses were performed using frequencies, mean values, percentages and the Pearson correlation coefficient. A logistic regression model was used to determine the relationship between safety culture and the risk of burnout.

A total of 1,101 questionnaires was considered for analysis. Most of the participants were male (86.2%) and younger than 40 years (73.2%). A high risk ohortage, this is especially relevant with regard to the challenges of patient safety and quality of outcomes in care.
This is the first large scale study investigating burnout among non-medical health care workers in preclinical EMS and their perceived safety culture in Germany as well as the association between the two. The results show the necessity to focus on perceived dimensions of safety culture in organizations, to develop measures reducing stress and improve job satisfaction and working conditions. In the context of increasing skills shortage, this is especially relevant with regard to the challenges of patient safety and quality of outcomes in care.
Palliative care is a particular challenge in rural regions with low population density. Every patient should have access to palliative care regardless of age, diagnosis, prognosis, place of residence and economic aspects. The aim was to identify problem areas in palliative care in rural regions and to find possible solutions from the perspective of health service providers.

A standardised written survey was conducted among providers of general and specialised palliative care in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In total, 489 service providers were sent a questionnaire. A random sample of general palliative care providers and all specialised palliative care providers in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were contacted. For the evaluation of the structure of palliative care and to identify problem areas, the German school grading system was used (1=very good, 6=insufficient). The results of the survey were descriptively analysed.

The response rate was 19% (n=93). Identified problems were thene functionalities.
The results indicate infrastructural, organisational and quality-related problems in providing palliative care. The provision of palliative care in rural areas could be strengthened through targeted training, outpatient consultation services, coordination units and the integration of telemedicine functionalities.

Using a descriptive qualitative design, all included plans of study courses, module handbooks and descriptions of the Master's degree programmes were analysed.

The Master's degree programmes were similar in their structural elements as well as in their content of education. They aim at enhancing competences related to the areas of health services research to identify health care needs and to develop, initiate, evaluate and critically assess innovative care strategies across disciplines.

Although the content is similar, the study programmes focus on specific aspects that allow students to choose a certain programme depending on their preferences. A next step can be the development of a core curriculum that takes into consideration further findings and the discourse of different stakeholders.
