The aim of this study is to assess whether pupillary modifications following ocular anticholinergic and cholinergic drugs can identify subjects with neurodegenerative diseases from early stages.
51 subjects were divided into 3 groups, according to different neurodegenerative diseases, and compared with a control group of 10 patients. Pupil diameter has been measured at different times after topical administration of tropicamide 0.01% in the right eye. Then, topical administration of pilocarpine 0.06% has been performed, followed by pupillary constriction measurement. Pupillary response rates were stratified according to acetylcholinesterase inhibitors intake.
Observed mydriasis and pupillary constriction was similar in all study groups at all evaluation times. Patients without acetylcholinesterase inhibitors intake presented greater mydriasis.
Although it was not possible to observe significant differences among groups in terms of pupillary response, the analysis of pupillary features may become an useful tool to detect efficacy of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors.

A 68-year-old female was admitted to the ER due to dysphagia and a cough. The patient had a medical history of TEF resulting from a tracheostomy and prolonged mechanical ventilation. Previous endoscopic treatment had failed, namely 3-attempts of closure with an over-the-scope clip (OTSC®). The patient refused surgery. After a multidisciplinary discussion (Gastroenterology, Pneumology, Surgery and Interventional-Cardiology), we decided to attempt Amplatzer-Occluder® placement. An 8mm Amplatzer-Occluder® was placed from the tracheal side, with sequential opening of the esophageal and tracheal strands (under endoscopic, bronchofibroscopic and fluoroscopic visualization). Nevertheless, migration of the device occurred 8-weeks later. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) was placed and the patient was referred to surgery. When there is extensive fibrosis that is not amendable to the application of clips, atrial septal defect occluder devices can be considered to manage TEF. Nevertheless, there is a need to develop strategies to minimize migration risk.
the present study aimed to describe the characteristics of articles that had the most citations in the field of digestive endoscopy.
articles included were obtained from the Web of Science database, which were selected and ranked according to the number of citations. The characteristics of the 100 most cited articles were then analyzed.
the number of citations of the top 100 of 303,063 eligible papers ranged from 370 to 2,866. The most cited paper was a study of colorectal cancer prevention using colonoscopic polypectomy. The most common topics discussed by the top 100 papers included colonoscopy (n = 33) and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (n = 23), with most of the papers focusing on diagnosis (n = 24) and treatment (n = 15).
by identifying the most influential publications, the present study could serve as a guide toward further development in the area of digestive endoscopy.

It is the first example where AIs serve as the [C,O] 2-atom synthon in organic synthesis. This work not only reveals a new role of isatin AIs in cycloaddition reaction but also provides an efficient access to unprecedented spiroheterocycle compounds.Glycosylation is one of the most important post-translational modifications of proteins and plays an essential role in spermatogenesis, maturation, extracellular quality control, capacitation, sperm-egg recognition, and final fertilization. Spermatozoa are synthesized in the testes inactively with a thick glycocalyx and passed through the epididymis for further modification by glycosylation, deglycosylation, and integration to reach maturation. Subsequently, sperm capacitation and further fertilization require redistribution of glycoconjugates and dramatic glycocalyx modification of the spermatozoa surface. Furthermore, glycoproteins and glycans in seminal plasma are functional in maintaining spermatozoa structure and stability. Therefore, aberrant glycosylation may cause alteration of semen function and even infertility. Currently, mass spectrometry-based technologies have allowed large-scale profiling of glycans and glycoproteins in human semen. Quantitative analysis of semen glycosylation has also indicated many involved glycoproteome issues in male infertility and the potential biomarkers for diagnosis of male infertility in clinical. This review summarizes the role of glycosylation during spermatozoa development, the large-scale profiling of glycome and glycoproteome in human semen, as well as the association of aberrant glycosylation with infertility.A monodentate directing group, 2-chlorotetrafluoroethylsulfinylmide (-NHSOCF2CF2Cl), for inert C(sp3)-H bond activation is reported. This directing group shows efficient ability in Pd(II)-catalyzed C(sp3)-H olefination. The desired olefination products undergo subsequent Michael addition and in situ expulsion of the auxiliary to provide the free NH γ-lactam products. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ei1.html reveal that the auxiliary group is crucial for C(sp3)-H activation.Sunlight, temperature, and microbial grazing are among the environmental factors promoting the inactivation of viral pathogens in surface waters. Globally, these factors vary across time and space. The persistence of viral pathogens, and ultimately their ecology and dispersion, hinges on their ability to withstand the environmental conditions encountered. To understand how virus populations evolve under changing environmental conditions, we experimentally adapted echovirus 11 (E11) to four climate regimes. #link# Specifically, we incubated E11 in lake water at 10 and 30 °C and in the presence and absence of sunlight. Temperature was the main driver of adaptation, resulting in an increased thermotolerance of the 30 °C adapted populations, whereas the 10 °C adapted strains were rapidly inactivated at higher temperatures. This finding is consistent with a source-sink model in which strains emerging in warm climates can persist in temperate regions, but not vice versa. A microbial risk assessment revealed that the enhanced thermotolerance increases the length of time in which there is an elevated probability of illness associated with swimming in contaminated water.
