Conclusions Depth strongly affected bacterial rather than archaeal and fungal communities. Metal(loid)s prevailed over physicochemical variables in shaping the bacterial community in the vadose zone-aquifer continuum. Significance and impact of the study Our study provides a new perspective on the structure of microbial communities from the vadose zone to the deep aquifers.Sports-related concussion is a serious health challenge, and females are at higher risk of sustaining a sports-related concussion compared to males. Although there are many studies that investigate outcomes following concussion, females remain an understudied population, despite representing a large proportion of the organized sports community. In this review, we provide a summary of studies that investigate sex-related differences in outcome following sports-related concussion. Moreover, we provide an introduction to the methods used to study sex-related differences after sports-related concussion, including common clinical and cognitive measures, neuroimaging techniques, as well as biomarkers. A literature search inclusive of articles published to March 2020 was performed using PubMed. The studies were reviewed and discussed with regard to the methods used. Findings from these studies remain mixed with regard to the effect of sex on clinical symptoms, concussion-related alterations in brain structure and function, and recovery trajectories. Nonetheless, there is initial evidence to suggest that sex-related differences following concussion are important to consider in efforts to develop objective biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of concussion. Additional studies on this topic are, however, clearly needed to improve our understanding of sex-related differences following concussion, as well as to understand their neurobiological underpinnings. Such studies will help pave the way toward more personalized clinical management and treatment of sports-related concussion. Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of a palatal splint on stability in multi-segment maxillary osteotomies. Setting and sample population Retrospective series of fifty-one adult patients, consecutively operated with bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) and three-piece maxillary osteotomies, divided according to the use of a palatal splint (Group 1, n = 30) or no palatal splint (Group 2, n = 21). Materials and methods Maxillary surgical casts (T1) and post-retention casts (T2), taken at least six months after discontinuation of orthodontic retention, were digitized (MicroScribe-3DX), measured and compared. Fifty-one landmarks were identified on the maxillary, transverse dimension changes and arch length were calculated. Selleck NS 105 Longitudinal changes in all measurements were assessed by t test. Results Post-surgical transverse instability in group 1 ranged from 0.3 ± 0.4 to -1.3 ± 0.2 mm and was statistically significantly smaller than in group 2 that ranged from -1.0 ± 0.3 to -2.5 ± 0.5 mm. Conclusions The use of a palatal splint after segmental Le Fort I maxillary osteotomy improved transverse stability in the posterior region. The post-surgical transverse instability occurred only between canine gingival points and thus suggesting no clinical relevance. The individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis by Vollgraff Heidweiller-Schreurs et al. (BJOG 2020) reaches important conclusions on the utility of cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) to predict adverse perinatal outcome that is at odds with several aggregate data meta-analyses, including one by the authors themselves (Vollgraff Heidweiller-Schreurs et al. Ultrasound Obstet Gynecol 2018;51313-22). What shall we take from this?Proteolytic cleavage of the cell adhesion molecule L1 (L1) in brain tissue and in cultured cerebellar neurons results in the generation and nuclear import of a 30 kDa fragment comprising most of L1's C-terminal, intracellular domain. In search of molecules that interact with this domain, we performed affinity chromatography with the recombinant intracellular L1 domain and a nuclear extract from mouse brains, and identified potential nuclear L1 binding partners involved in transcriptional regulation, RNA processing and transport, DNA repair, chromatin remodeling, and nucleocytoplasmic transport. By co-immunoprecipitation and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using recombinant proteins, we verified the direct interaction between L1 and the nuclear binding partners non-POU domain containing octamer-binding protein and splicing factor proline/glutamine-rich. The proximity ligation assay confirmed this close interaction in cultures of cerebellar granule cells. Our findings suggest that L1 fragments regulate multiple nuclear functions in the nervous system. We discuss possible physiological and pathological roles of these interactions in regulation of chromatin structure, gene expression, RNA processing, and DNA repair.Cortical networks are complex systems of a great many interconnected neurons that operate from collective dynamical states. To understand how cortical neural networks function, it is important to identify their common dynamical operating states from the probabilistic viewpoint. Probabilistic characteristics of these operating states often underlie network functions. Here, using multi-electrode data from three separate experiments, we identify and characterize a cortical operating state (the "probability polling" or "p-polling" state), common across mouse and monkey with different behaviors. If the interaction among neurons is weak, the p-polling state provides a quantitative understanding of how the high dimensional probability distribution of firing patterns can be obtained by the low-order maximum entropy formulation, effectively utilizing a low dimensional stimulus-coding structure. These results show evidence for generality of the p-polling state and in certain situations its advantage of providing a mathematical validation for the low-order maximum entropy principle as a coding strategy. What is known and objectives Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are novel antidiabetic agents that have advantages of weight loss and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. However, SGLT2i have various side effects. To understand their effectiveness, we analysed patients who had discontinued the use of dapagliflozin, an SGLT2i, 3 months after the initial prescription. We evaluated the discontinuation rate of dapagliflozin and the incidence rate of its side effects. Methods Patients who were initially prescribed dapagliflozin for blood sugar control from December 2014 to December 2016 were analysed. Data of patients in whom dapagliflozin administration was discontinued 90 days after initial prescription were collected separately, and the reasons were evaluated by a direct chart review. Results and discussion A total of 8.96% (149/1663) patients discontinued dapagliflozin or switched medications within 3 months. Dapagliflozin was discontinued in 24.8% (37/149) of cases due to unexpected causes such as increased blood sugar and weight gain.
