The method developed in this study provided a novel strategy to enhance the accuracy of diagnosis and early detection of PD.The clinical and biological heterogeneity of head and neck cancer (HNC) is paralleled by a plethora of different symptoms that affect the patient's quality of life. These symptoms include, for instance, pain, fatigue, nutritional issues, airways obstruction, voice alterations and psychological distress. In addition, patients with HNC are prone to a high risk of infection, and may also suffer from acute complications, such as hypercalcemia, spine compression by bone metastasis or bleeding. Prolonging survival is also an inherent expectation for all patients. Addressing the above needs is crucial in all patients with HNC, and especially in those with recurrent and/or metastatic (RM) disease. However, research on how to address patients' needs in RM-HNC remains scarce. This paper defines patients' needs for RM HNC and presents an Expert Opinion on how to address them, proposing also some lines of research.We investigated whether a sudden rise in prediction error widens an individual's focus of attention by increasing ocular fixations on cues that otherwise tend to be ignored. To this end, we used a discrimination learning task including cues that were either relevant or irrelevant for predicting the outcomes. Half of participants experienced contingency reversal once they had learned to predict the outcomes (reversal group, n = 30). The other half experienced the same contingencies throughout the task (control group, n = 30). As participants' prediction accuracy increased, they showed a decrease in the number of fixations directed to the irrelevant cues. Following contingency reversal, participants in the reversal group showed a drop in accuracy, indicating a rise in prediction error, and fixated on the irrelevant cues more often than participants in the control group. We discuss the results in the context of attentional theories of associative learning.

We used human erythrocytes infected with P. falciparum and experimental cerebral malaria (ECM) animal model to assess the potential antimalarial effect of eugenol, a component of clove bud essential oil.
Plasmodium falciparum cultures treated with increasing concentrations of eugenol reduced parasitemia in a dose-dependent manner, with IC
of 532.42±29.55μM. This effect seems to be irreversible and maintained even in the presence of high parasitemia. The prominent effect of eugenol was detected in the evolution from schizont to ring forms, inducing important morphological changes, indicating a disruption in the development of the erythrocytic cycle. Aberrant structural modification was observed by electron microscopy, showing the separation of the two nuclear membrane leaflets as well as other subcellular membranes, such as from the digestive vacuole. Importantly, in vivo studies using ECM revealed a reduction in blood parasitemia and cerebral edema when mice were treated for 6 consecutive days upon infection.
These data suggest a potential effect of eugenol against Plasmodium sp. with an impact on cerebral malaria.

Our results provide a rational basis for the use of eugenol in therapeutic strategies to the treatment of malaria.Overexpression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), which is linked to multidrug resistance (MDR), is one of the underlying obstacles to the success of chemotherapy as it reduces the efficacy of anticancer drugs and the side effects of these increase as a result of any increased dose to achieve the therapeutic effect. To identify agents with P-gp inhibitory properties, ethanol extracts from 80 plants were screened for their ability to increase intracellular doxorubicin-associated fluorescence, and the extract of Ligaria cuneifolia was found to be the most effective. Its bioassay-guided isolation yielded the pentacyclic triterpene betulin as active agent. This efficiently inhibited P-gp mediated efflux, as demonstrated by the enhancement of the intracellular accumulation of doxorubicin and rhodamine 123 from 1.56 μM in the P-gp overexpressing MDR leukemia cell, Lucena 1. Betulin was also able to render Lucena 1 sensitive to Dox from 0.39 μM. The docking studies revealed that betulin tightly binds to a key region of the TMDs, with a binding mode overlapping one main site of doxorubicin and, more interestingly, emulating the same contacts as tariquidar, as revealed by the per-residue energetic analysis from molecular dynamics simulations. MTT assay using peripheral blood mononuclear cells and hemolysis assay showed that betulin is devoid of toxicity. These findings provide important evidence that betulin may be a safe and promising entity to be further investigated to develop agents able to overcome P-gp-mediated MDR, resulting in a more effective and less toxic chemotherapy.In 2017, JECFA requested reproductive and developmental toxicity studies to finalize an acceptable daily intake for solvent rosemary extracts. Rosemary extract was provided to rats at dietary concentrations of 0 (control), 2100, 3600, or 5000 mg/kg, for 14 days before mating, during mating, and thereafter (throughout gestation and up to Lactation Day 13 for females) until necropsy. General toxicity (clinical signs, body weight, food consumption) and reproductive/developmental outcomes (fertility and mating performance, estrous cycles, anogenital distance, thyroid hormones, reproductive organ weights, thyroid histopathology) were assessed. There were no signs of general toxicity and no effects on reproduction; thus, the highest concentration tested (equivalent to mean daily intakes of 316 or 401 mg/kg bw/day [149 or 189 mg/kg bw/day carnosol and carnosic acid] for males and females, respectively) was established as the no-observed-adverse-effect level for general and reproductive toxicity.
