Let's dig in further about our Digestive System
The Digestive system is a complex series of organs responsible for breaking down the food we eat into nutrients that our bodies require for energy, growth and repair.
The work begins when we chew food
-The teeth breaks down the food into tiny pieces for easier digestion then the salivary gland produces saliva to make it easier to swallow, it also contains enzymes like amylase that begins to breakdown of carbohydrates
After swallowing the food, it goes straight into the esophagus
The esophagus moves food down by the process of Peristalsis, This is a rhytmic wave like contraction of muscles that propels food down the esophagus towards the stomach
After the esophagus, The swallowed food or drink comes to the stomach
Stomach serves as a storage for the food while it's being broken down, it also churns down on the food with gastric juices
It is a mixture of Hydrochloric acid and what it does is to kill bacterias and activates the digestive enzymes,
Enzymes are like pepsin that breaks down proteins
After breaking down the food in the stomach it goes to the small intestines
The Small Intestines is the primary site of digestion and absorption
-It receives bile from the lives which is stored in the gallbladder which then helps digest fats
-Nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals are absorbed into the bloodstream through the walls of the small intestines
After going through the small intestines, It will now go to the Large Intestines
The large instestines absorbs most of the remaining water from the digested foods and converts remaining waste into solid stool. It also contains beneficial bacteria that help break down some substances and produce vitamins
Rectus is the final section of the large intestines which stores stool until it's ready for elimination
Lastly is the Anus, It is the opening in which the stool gets expelled from the body
The anus has two key sphincters
The Internal anal sphincter, This is involuntary or controlled by the autonomic nervous system and keeps the anus closed most of the time to prevent accidental leakage.
Next is External anal sphincter, This is voluntary or under conscious control, allowing you to decide when to expel waste.
Here are some accessory organs that also helps to the process of breakdown
Liver produces bile which helps digest fats.
Gallbladder stores and releases bile.
Pancreas produces enzymes that aid in digestion and hormones that regulte blood sugar
And that contains all the parts and fuction of Digestion, Always remember to eat properly. Thank and you and Goodbye! :)
