Phytochemical investigation afforded 19 compounds, including alkaloids, coumarins, flavonoid glycosides, a cinnamic acid derivative and a long-chain alkane. These compounds were tested against a panel of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains, i.e., ATCC 25923, SA-1199B, XU212, MRSA-274819 and EMRSA-15. The MIC values of the active compounds, chalepin (9), chalepensin (10), rutamarin (11), rutin 3'-methyl ether (14), rutin 7,4'-dimethyl ether (15), 6-hydroxy-rutin 3',7-dimethyl ether (16) and arborinine (18) were in the range of 32-128 µg/mL against the tested MRSA strains. Compounds 10 and 16 were the most active compounds from R. chalepensis, and were active against four out of six tested MRSA strains, and in silico studies were performed on these compounds. The anti-MRSA activity of compound 16 was comparable to that of the positive control norfloxacin (MICs 32 vs 16 μg/mL, respectively) against the MRSA strain XU212, which is a Kuwaiti hospital isolate that possesses the TetK tetracycline efflux pump. This is the first report on the anti-MRSA property of compounds isolated from R. chalepensis and relevant in silico studies on the most active compounds.A superhydrophobic material was prepared by a simple and easily accessed sol-gel method using epoxy resin (E-51) and γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH-550) as the precursors, aqueous ammonia (NH4OH) as the catalyst and hydrogenated silicone oil (PMHS) as the hydrophobic modifier, and then pelleting the final product. The morphologies, surface chemical properties and thermal stability of the superhydrophobic bulk materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier infrared spectrometry and thermal analyzer. The hydrophobic properties and repairability of the as-prepared materials were also studied. The results showed that the prepared epoxy resin-hydrogenated silicone oil bulk materials were composed of tightly bound nanoparticles with a size of 50-100 nm in diameter. The material showed excellent superhydrophobic properties with a surface contact angle of 152°. The material also had good thermal resistance with a heat-resistant temperature of 300 °C and showed good repairability. The epoxy resin-hydrogenated silicone oil bulk superhydrophobic material exhibited excellent performance and showed wide application prospects.We present the sequencing and comparative analysis of 17 mitochondrial genomes of Nearctic and Neotropical amphipods of the genus Hyalella, most from the Andean Altiplano. The mitogenomes obtained comprised the usual 37 gene-set of the metazoan mitochondrial genome showing a gene rearrangement (a reverse transposition and a reversal) between the North and South American Hyalella mitogenomes. Hyalella mitochondrial genomes show the typical AT-richness and strong nucleotide bias among codon sites and strands of pancrustaceans. Protein-coding sequences are biased towards AT-rich codons, with a preference for leucine and serine amino acids. Numerous base changes (539) were found in tRNA stems, with 103 classified as fully compensatory, 253 hemi-compensatory and the remaining base mismatches and indels. Most compensatory Watson-Crick switches were AU -> GC linked in the same haplotype, whereas most hemi-compensatory changes resulted in wobble GU and a few AC pairs. These results suggest a pairing fitness increase in tRNAs after crossing low fitness valleys. Branch-site level models detected positive selection for several amino acid positions in up to eight mitochondrial genes, with atp6 and nad5 as the genes displaying more sites under selection.The structure, magnetic properties, optical properties and adhesion efficiency of CoFeBY films were studied. Co40Fe40B10Y10 alloy was sputtered onto Si (100) with a thickness of 10-50 nm, and then annealed at room temperature, 100 °C, 200 °C and 300 °C for 1 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the CoFeBY films deposited at room temperature are amorphous. Annealing at 100 °C gave the films enough thermal energy to change the structure from amorphous to crystalline. After annealing, the CoFeBY thin film showed a body-centered cubic (BCC) CoFeB (110) characteristic peak at 44°. However, the low-frequency alternative-current magnetic susceptibility (χac) and saturation magnetization (MS) increased with the increase of thickness. CoFeBY thin films had the highest χac and MS after annealing at 300 °C compared to that at other temperatures. After annealing at 300 °C, the surface energy of CoFeBY film is the maximum at 50 nm. Higher surface energy indicated stronger adhesion.
