Mental Health Services on the NHS
The NHS has responded to the increase in mental health issues by providing services. This includes:
The Long Term Plan has made an unrepeatable commitment to increase investment in mental health services quicker than the NHS budget in general. This will include specialized work in suicide prevention.
Getting help
One in four people will suffer from mental illness at some time in their lives. The good news is that there are a variety of different ways to get help, and most people recover over time. However, how to get a mental health assessment uk is important to know what assistance is available, and who can offer it.
You can seek assistance from a variety places, including your doctor (primary care medical doctor) as well as your local health center or a community mental health team. These teams consist of nurses, occupational therapists, psychotherapists and speech and language therapists who work with the people who utilize the service. You may receive individual or group therapy based on the kind of help you require.
Your GP will typically request you to fill out an application form to send you a referral to a local mental health team. They will also ask you what type of assistance you require. You will be consulted by members of the mental team which includes psychologist, psychiatrist or social worker. In certain instances your evaluation and treatment will be carried out by a clinical nurse specialist. You can contact the NHS 111 helpline when you're in crisis. If you are already receiving mental health services, it is best to call your usual team first, unless outside of hours, or on a weekend or bank holiday.
The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health included plans to establish more multidisciplinary, community-based, place-based mental health teams with links to primary care networks. These teams will improve the quality of mental health care delivered to people experiencing a crisis, and offer support to patients within their communities and at home instead of in hospitals.
The plan also aims to make crisis services accessible by reducing wait times and allowing more beds. It would also introduce the mental transport vehicle and ensure that all ambulances are stocked with a mental liaison nurse in the control room to ensure that people experiencing a mental crisis are supported during emergency situations.
Treatment options
The NHS offers a variety of treatment options for mental health problems. GPs are usually able to treat less severe illnesses, however more serious issues will require an expert team. These teams work across both community and primary mental health services, as well as psychiatric hospitals. There are also safe spaces where you can get help for those who are in crisis.
Talking therapies for depression and anxiety are among the most popular kinds of treatment. Previously known as IAPT These programs have seen referrals increase each year since they were introduced in 2008. The NHS Long Term Plan commits to expanding these services to ensure that 1.9 million people can access them by 2023/2024.
Psychiatric medications are another crucial component of treatment. They can help alleviate symptoms by altering the way chemicals in your brain work. They can also help alleviate the side effects of other treatments. Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate medicine for you.
A wide range of talking therapy options are available including group therapy and individual therapy. Some of them are offered in person, whereas others can be done remotely. Some patients prefer face-to face treatment, but it's the choice of the patient. Mind is one of many charities that provide support groups and courses. The site is full of information that is reliable however, be aware of the fact that there are a lot of false or misleading claims on the internet concerning mental health issues.
While the NHS is working to improve its mental health services however, it is still struggling to keep up with demand. In the UK, there are 54 mental trusts. They receive the majority of funding for their services from clinical commissioning groups. They are typically located in a specific region however, they can also be commissioned to provide national services.
One of the main issues is the lack of resources to meet rising demand. There are concerns over the quality and availability of psychiatrists and nurses. The NHS is trying to improve the quality of care by introducing new ways of work and delivering more training. It is also introducing more efficient and safer methods to treat people in crisis, such as mobile crisis teams and secure spaces.
Helping you
Since the NHS launched 70 years ago there have been a lot of positive developments for people suffering from mental health issues. Treatment options have increased and social barriers are being broken down. But there is more to be done.
People who are in mental health issues should receive the help they require quickly and easily. That's why the NHS is putting in the effort to improve services for people who need these services. We will ensure that every acute hospital is without a mental health liaison in A&E departments and wards for inpatients by 2020/21. We will also ensure that 70% of these services will be in line with the "core 24" standard by 2023/24. We will work towards 100% coverage thereafter.
We will also expand community services, including talking therapy, in order to provide support for hundreds of thousands of individuals suffering from mental health issues regardless of whether they are common or severe. We will continue to work on our national Improving Access to Psychological Therapies program (IAPT) in order to ensure that more people suffering from mental health issues can be seen quicker by therapists who are qualified.
The NHS provides confidential, free helplines to those suffering from mental health issues. They include the Samaritans, Mind and Rethink. These helplines are run by volunteers who offer the opportunity to talk in a secure environment or provide advice and information about how to handle your mental health issues.
There are also local organisations that can provide help and advice to those who suffer from mental health issues. Self-help guides, coping methods and other activities are available. Many of these organizations also provide support groups in person for those who prefer this option.
The University's Open Door Team offers a drop-in counseling service for students who are feeling down or stressed. Nightline is a student counseling service that offers private listening assistance, information and support from experienced volunteers. Charities such as Mind and Rethink can provide many sources of information and assistance, both on the internet and in local groups. They offer a variety of courses and activities including mindfulness classes to art classes, which are useful for people with mental health issues.
Making a referral
Mental health services are under pressure and GPs are forced to make difficult decisions about which specialist services they should refer their patients to. The GP will consider the medical history of the patient and recommend them to services they believe will be able assist. They can refer a patient to an NHS trust, or an independent provider.
A mental health professional will assess the referral to determine if it's appropriate or not. If the specialist isn't happy with the referral, they'll call the GP to discuss their decision and explain the reasons. They can also ask the GP for more information or to modify the referral.
Referrals to the local Community Mental Health Team can be made through the NHS e-Referral Service. The system allows GPs and other healthcare professionals to refer patients to either a mental health assessment or directly to an appointment with an outpatient. Not all CMHTs provide both options, and the system is not able to be used for all kinds of mental health referrals.
A GP may also refer patients to a community mental health specialist service (CMT). They are typically run by a major local healthcare organisation or a hospital. CMTs can be a good alternative for those looking to see an experienced psychiatrist or psychologist but don't need inpatient treatment. They can also provide an early intervention service where a psychiatrist collaborates with a therapist to help a person overcome a crisis or increase their life quality.
One of the major challenges faced by a CMT is to ensure that all appropriate referrals are assigned within the proper time frame. One of the issues is that a large number of referrals are deemed urgent, even though they may not be. This can lead to delays and over-working for people who aren't in a crisis.
To address this issue, some CMHTs are trying to establish more consistent guidelines for what constitutes an urgent referral. This was achieved by using a standardised form which asks the referrer if they believe the situation is urgent. The form has a checkbox that the referrer has to check when the referral is urgent.
