In this section, you will be introduced to common graphics types. You will explore the use of graphics, and learn about graphic file formats and other terms related to the creation and display of graphical images.

Teaching Points

Discuss common types of graphics, such as clip art, logos, web graphics, backgrounds and digital photos.
Discuss how graphics are used as a method of entertainment and communication, such as product packaging, magazine and book illustrations, and art.
Point out that graphics help add visual interest, grab attention and evoke emotions.
Ask the students what they think the phrase “A picture is worth a thousand words” means. Do they believe it is a true statement?
Introduce the students to common graphics software, such as Adobe Photoshop, CorelDRAW and Pixlr.
Explain that graphics software applications vary in price, usage, and platforms supported.
Almost all graphics software applications include a large variety of tools and brushes that are digitally tailored to represent traditional artistic styles such as those produced with oils, acrylics, watercolors, charcoal and pen.
Some applications, such as Adobe Photoshop, are geared toward professional users, while others, such as Pixlr (a free browser-based photo editing application) are geared toward students and casual users.
