BACKGROUND Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder. Evidence suggests that disturbance of the gastrointestinal microbiota may be implicated in FD. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the efficacy of prebiotics and probiotics for FD. METHODS MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register were searched (through September 2018). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that recruited adults with FD and that compared prebiotics, probiotics, or synbiotics with placebo or no therapy were eligible. Eligibility assessment and data extraction were performed by two independent researchers. Dichotomous symptom data were pooled to obtain a relative risk (RR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of remaining symptomatic after therapy. Continuous data were pooled using a standardized or weighted mean difference with a 95% CI. RESULTS The search strategy identified 1062 citations. Five RCTs were eligible for inclusion. The RR of FD symptoms improving with probiotics or probiotics vs placebo was 1.15 (95% CI 1.01-1.30). Probiotics and prebiotics had beneficial effects on symptom scores of FD. Data for synbiotics in the context of FD were sparse, and no definite conclusions could be drawn. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study belongs to the category of systematic reviews, not clinical trials. Therefore, it does not require ethical approval. The results of this study will be published in influential international academic journals related to this topic. CONCLUSION Probiotics and prebiotics seemed to be effective treatments for FD, although the individual species and strains that are the most beneficial remain unclear. Using only probiotics failed to improve the symptoms of FD. Further evidence is required before the role of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics in FD can be fully understood. We sought to investigate the effect of total triiodothyronine (TT3) reduction in the follow-up of patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN). A total of 121 patients were enrolled and classified into a low TT3 group or a normal group. Clinical indicators were compared between the groups, and changes in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), albumin (ALB), thyroid-stimulating hormone, serum creatinine, total protein, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) during follow-up were analysed. In the analysis by TT3 level, ALB was significantly lower in the low TT3 group (P  less then  .05), while TC, TG, LDL-C, fibrinogen, and renal pathological staging were significantly higher in the low TT3 group (P  less then  .05). Analysis of variance for repeated measurement during follow-up showed that there were no significant differences in eGFR and ALB between the groups. TC, TG, and LDL-C levels were significantly higher in the low TT3 group (P  less then  .05). Approximately 37% of patients with IMN showed a decrease in TT3, which was accompanied by significantly decreased ALB level, higher pathological stage, and increased serum lipid level compared with patients having a normal TT3 level. The management of TT3, and appropriate intervention, may therefore help to prevent the kidney damage progress in patients with IMN.Hemodynamic stability is one of the most critical aspects of adrenal surgery for pheochromocytoma. Few articles have evaluated the hemodynamic status of patients undergoing posterior retroperitoneal adrenalectomy (PRA) for pheochromocytoma. The aim of this study is to compare the intraoperative hemodynamic parameters between lateral transperitoneal adrenalectomy (TPA) and PRA in this groups of patients. This report describes a retrospective study of 53 pheochromocytoma patients who underwent endoscopic adrenalectomy via transperitoneal (22 patients) or posterior retroperitoneal (31 patients) approaches from January 2008 to March 2015. Data from these patients were compared to investigate the differences in hemodynamic parameters between the 2 approaches.Clinical parameters at presentation were similar between the 2 groups, except for tumor size, which was larger in the TPA group. The PRA group is associated with reduced operative time, blood loss, and length of hospital stay compared to TPA even after adjusting for the tumor size. There was greater BP fluctuations and higher maximum systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) within the TPA group compared to PRA during univariate analysis. This was however not significant after adjusting for tumor size. There was no difference in the intraoperative inotropic support requirement between the 2 groups.PRA is associated with stable intraoperative hemodynamic status, as well as favorable perioperative outcomes compared to TPA in patients with small pheochromocytomas.Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is currently the most commonly used method in clinical practice to measure body composition. However, the bioelectrical impedance analyzer is not designed according to different countries, races, and elderly populations. Because different races may have different body compositions, a prediction model for the elderly population in Taiwan should be developed to avoid population bias, thereby improving the accuracy of community evaluation surveys.Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used as a standard method for comparison, and impedance analysis was used for the development of a highly accurate predictive model that is suitable for assessing the body composition of elderly people. This study employed a cross-sectional design and recruited 438 elderly people who were undergoing health examinations at the health management center in the Tri-Service General Hospital as study subjects. Basic demographic variables and impedance analysis values were used in four predictive ople and identify people with sarcopenia in the community.BACKGROUND Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used to treat diabetic complications including diabetic retinopathy for many years. OBJECTIVES This review was performed to systematically assess the efficacy and safety of TCM for treating non- proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR). METHODS Retrieval from 7 electronic databases was conducted to determine eligible trials published until March 1, 2018. Randomized controlled trials of NPDR that comparing compound Chinese medicine containing the therapeutic method of activating blood and remove stasis versus controls were included for analysis. Primary outcomes were progression of retinopathy. Secondary outcomes included visual acuity, mean defect of visual field, micro-aneurysms, hemorrhage areas, exudates, capillary nonperfusion areas, hemorheological indicators, oscillatory potentials (Ops), glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), and adverse events. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed. see more Results expressing as risk ratios (RRs) or mean differences (MD) were analyzed with a fixed- or random- effect model.
