The analysis of products of conception (POC) is clinically important to establish the cause of early pregnancy loss. Data from such analyses can lead to specific interventions in subsequent natural or assisted conceptions. The techniques available to examine the chromosomal composition of POC have limitations and can give misleading results when maternal cell contamination (MCC) is overlooked. The aim of this study was to develop a protocol for MCC assessment and to formulate POC material handling, testing, and reporting recommendations. Using array comparative genomic hybridization, we tested 86 POC samples, of which 47 sample pairs (DNA extracted from the POC sample and maternal DNA) were assessed for the presence of MCC. MCC was evaluated using an approach we developed, which exploited the genotyping of 14 STR, AMEL, and SRY loci. POC samples showing the clear presence of villi (63.9%) did not contain any signs of the maternal genome and can therefore be reliably tested using conventional methods. The proportion of 46,XX karyotype in the unselected sample batch was 0.39, which fell to 0.23 in visually good samples and was 0.27 in samples having no signs of contamination upon MCC testing. MCC assessment can rescue visually poor samples from being discarded or wrongly genotyped. We demonstrate here that classification based on visual POC material evaluation and MCC testing leads to predictable and reliable POC genetic testing outcomes. Our formulated recommendations covering POC material collection, transportation, primary and secondary processing, as well as the array of pertinent considerations discussed here, can be implemented by laboratories to improve their POC genetic testing practices. We anticipate our protocol for MCC assessment and recommendations will help reduce the misconception regarding the etiology of miscarried fetuses and foster informed decision-making by clinicians and patients dealing with early pregnancy loss.
To investigate factors associated with the stigmatization of people of Asian descent during COVID-19 in the United States and factors that can mitigate or prevent stigmatization.
A national sample survey of adults (
= 842) was conducted online between May 11 and May 19, 2020. Outcome variables were two dimensions of stigmatization, responsibility and persons as risk. Metabolism inhibitor Hierarchical regression analyses were performed.
Racial prejudice, maladaptive coping, and biased media use each explained stigmatization. Racial prejudice, comprising stereotypical beliefs and emotion toward Asian Americans, was a stronger predictor of stigmatization than maladaptive coping or biased media use. Fear concerning the ongoing COVID-19 situation and the use of social media and partisan cable TV also predicted stigmatization. Low self-efficacy in dealing with COVID-19, when associated with high estimated harm of COVID-19, increased stigmatization. High perceived institutional efficacy in the handling of COVID-19 increased stigmatization when linked to high estimated harm of COVID-19. On the other hand, high perceived collective efficacy in coping with COVID-19 was associated with low stigmatization. More indirect contacts with Asians via the media predicted less stigmatization.
Efforts to reduce stigmatization should address racial stereotypes and emotions, maladaptive coping, and biased media use by providing education and resources to the public. Fostering collective efficacy and media-based contacts with Asian Americans can facilitate these efforts.

Fostering collective efficacy and media-based contacts with Asian Americans can facilitate these efforts.Biofilm production, hitherto an uncharacterized feature among circulating Pasteurella multocida strains, was studied along with the antibiotic susceptibility pattern. On the basis of biofilm formation ability, all the strains were categorized into four groups under six different culture conditions strong biofilm-forming (22%), moderate (19%), weak (51%), and non-adherent (7%). Strains from serogroups A and B formed significant biofilms in at least one culture condition whereas strains from serogroup D were unable to form biofilms. All strains were found to be susceptible to tetracycline. In addition, the correlation between diverse factors (host, capsule type, clinical condition and the tadD gene) as well as antimicrobial susceptibility in biofilm production were analyzed by Joint distribution models, and showed that enrofloxacin and azithromycin resistant strains were positively correlated with strong biofilm production.

, a Romanised alphabetic system, to facilitate literacy development. This research investigates how Mandarin phonological awareness (PA) develops, and how it interacts with Pinyin in school-aged Mandarin-speaking children in China.
In Beijing, 182 students in grades two through four (ages ranged between 91 and 135 months) were tested for PA (syllable manipulation and onset-rime oddity tasks) and Pinyin knowledge (Pinyin symbol naming and syllable reading tasks). ANOVAs were used to examine their developmental trajectories. Partial correlations and linear regressions were used to examine the relationships between PA and Pinyin knowledge.
Syllable awareness has already reached the ceiling level by grade two, while onset-rime awareness is still developing across grades. The ability to name Pinyin symbols decreases over time, while the ability to read syllables written in Pinyin stays invariant across grades. PA and Pinyin knowledge are significantly correlated, and the results of linear regression indicated that the relationship between PA and Pinyin syllable reading is bi-directional.
This study suggests that Mandarin PA development shows features characteristic of a non-alphabetic language with Pinyin knowledge playing a crucial role. Implications for theory and practice of Mandarin-speaking children's literacy development are discussed.
