Although the main role of LH is for reproductive function (e.g., ovulation), there are LH receptors present in several normal tissues including the thyroid and adrenal glands, gastrointestinal tract, cranial cruciate ligament and round ligament, and lymphocytes. In addition, there are LH receptors present in several neoplastic tissues (e.g., lymphoma, hemangiosarcoma, mastocytoma, transitional cell carcinoma, and osteosarcoma). The role of LH receptors in non-reproductive normal and neoplastic tissues is not known but may stimulate nitric oxide release and induce cell division. The precise etiology of the increased incidence of several non-reproductive long-term health complications following spaying and neutering is not known but may be related to LH receptor activation in these non-reproductive target tissues. How these effects may be mediated is described in this review.Estrogen (E2) is a major risk factor for the initiation and progression of malignancy in estrogen receptor (ER) positive breast cancers, whereas sirtuin 3 (Sirt3), a major mitochondrial NAD+-dependent deacetylase, has the inhibitory effect on the tumorigenic properties of ER positive MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Since it is unclear if this effect is mediated through the estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) signaling pathway, in this study, we aimed to determine if the tumor-suppressive function of Sirt3 in MCF-7 cells interferes with their response to E2. Although we found that Sirt3 improves the antioxidative response and mitochondrial fitness of the MCF-7 cells, it also increases DNA damage along with p53, AIF, and ERα expression. Moreover, Sirt3 desensitizes cells to the proliferative effect of E2, affects p53 by disruption of the ERα-p53 interaction, and decreases proliferation, colony formation, and migration of the cells. Our observations indicate that these tumor-suppressive effects of Sirt3 could be reversed by E2 treatment only to a limited extent which is not sufficient to recover the tumorigenic properties of the MCF-7 cells. This study provides new and interesting insights with respect to the functional role of Sirt3 in the E2-dependent breast cancers.In the current context, there is a growing interest in reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to promote ecological agriculture. The use of biochar and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) is an environmentally friendly alternative that can improve soil conditions and increase ecosystem productivity. However, the effects of biochar and PGPR amendments on forest plantations are not well known. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of biochar and PGPR applications on soil nutrients and bacterial community. To achieve this goal, we applied amendments of (i) biochar at 20 t hm-2, (ii) PGPR at 5 × 1010 CFU mL-1, and (iii) biochar at 20 t hm-2 + PGPR at 5 × 1010 CFU mL-1 in a eucalyptus seedling plantation in Guangxi, China. Three months after applying the amendments, we collected six soil samples from each treatment and from control plots. From each soil sample, we analyzed several physicochemical properties (pH, electrical conductivity, total N, inorganic N, NO3--N, NH4+-N, total P, total K, and soil water content), and we determined the bacterial community composition by sequencing the ribosomal 16S rRNA. Results indicated that co-application of biochar and PGPR amendments significantly decreased concentrations of soil total P and NH4+-N, whereas they increased NO3-N, total K, and soil water content. Biochar and PGPR treatments increased the richness and diversity of soil bacteria and the relative abundance of specific bacterial taxa such as Actinobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, and Cyanobacteria. We also found that soil physicochemical properties had no significant influence on the soil composition of bacterial phyla, but soil NH4+-N was significantly related to the soil community composition of dominant bacterial genus. Thus, our findings suggest that biochar and PGPR amendments could be useful to maintain soil sustainability in eucalyptus plantations.The optimization of mesa etch for a quasi-vertical gallium nitride (GaN) Schottky barrier diode (SBD) by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching was comprehensively investigated in this work, including selection of the etching mask, ICP power, radio frequency (RF) power, ratio of mixed gas, flow rate, and chamber pressure, etc. In particular, the microtrench at the bottom corner of the mesa sidewall was eliminated by a combination of ICP dry etching and tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) wet treatment. Finally, a highly anisotropic profile of the mesa sidewall was realized by using the optimized etch recipe, and a quasi-vertical GaN SBD was demonstrated, achieving a low reverse current density of 10-8 A/cm2 at -10 V.During human pregnancy, iron requirements gradually increase, leading to higher amounts of erythropoietin (EPO) and reticulocytes, and changes in erythrocyte size and density. Women with pregestational obesity experience "obesity hypoferremia" during pregnancy, which alters iron homeostasis. In this study we aimed to describe the relationship between EPO and iron nutrition status during nonanemic pregnancy, and to explore whether obesity and inflammation influence erythropoiesis and red cell indices. We conducted a secondary analysis of a cohort followed throughout pregnancy. Participants were nonanemic women assigned to two study groups based on pregestational body mass index (pgBMI) adequate weight (AW, n = 53) or obesity (Ob, n = 40). All received a multivitamin supplement. At gestational ages (GA) 13, 21, 28 and 34, we measured hemoglobin and red cell indices with an ACT-5DIFF hematology counter, and reticulocyte percentage by manual cell counting. EPO, interleukin (IL-6) and markers of iron status, i.e., hepcidin, serum transferrin receptor (sTfr) and ferritin, were measured by ELISA.
