Lower baseline sCNTN1 concentrations were associated with long-term disability progression during natalizumab treatment, making it a possible blood-based prognostic biomarker for RRMS.The current study evaluated ozone levels through passive samplers installed in 4 different points in a medium-sized city (Rio Grande, Brazil) with naturally low NO2 levels during a week of COVID-19 lockdown. Additionally, we evaluated the consequences of this response with regard to human health risk assessment and reduction of hospital admissions and ozone-related deaths. The reduction in ozone levels, one month after the implementation of containment measures, varied between 26 and 64% (average of 44%), in the different studied sites. The reduction of human mobility during the pandemic reduced the levels of ozone in Rio Grande city and consequently will bring benefits to health services in the municipality. This unexpected reduction in O3 levels must be related to the low 'natural' levels of NO2 in the city, which make the contribution of other precursors important for the fluctuation of O3 levels.Natural products have been studied to reveal new therapies against human dysfunctions since they present several medicinal properties. Caffeine, theobromine and (+)-catechin are remarkable natural agents in the class of methylxanthines and flavonoids. These bioactive molecules have several biological activities, for instance, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor capacity. In this sense, studies focusing on these molecules have been performed to discover new treatments against diseases, such as cancer. Cancer is a serious public health problem worldwide responsible for more than 70% of all deaths globally. Industrialized products associated with a sedentary lifestyle and a diet low in antioxidants are related to neoplasms development. Unfortunately, many types of cancers are extremely aggressive and untreatable since, in many cases, they are resistant to chemotherapy. Therefore, revealing new strategies to block cancer growth is one of the biggest challenges to science. In this context, despite the known anticancer actions of caffeine, theobromine and (+)-catechin, it is still essential to elucidate the causal antitumor mechanism of these molecules by analyzing the dysfunctional cancer pathways associated with the hallmarks of cancer. Hence, this review aims to describe the anticancer activity of caffeine, theobromine, and (+)-catechin against the different hallmarks and enabling characteristics of cancer.Upon the growing concern over a massive infodemic and politicization of health issues during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study investigated how individuals' use of partisan media and Trump briefings, along with other information sources, predicts risk preventive behaviors. Drawing on the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM), our survey analysis (n= 1,106) revealed that those obtaining COVID-19 information from conservative media and Trump briefings were less likely to believe that COVID-19 is a serious threat (perceived threat) and that recommended preventive behaviors are effective and feasible (perceived efficacy). These beliefs, in turn, resulted in their decreased intentions to adopt risk preventative behaviors. In contrast, those who got COVID-19 information from liberal media, health organizations' briefings, and traditional media reported heightened threat and efficacy perception, which, in turn, led to their willingness to take risk preventive actions.Community mentors can play a unique and critical role in developing and supporting graduate and health professional student learning in underresourced community-based settings. These mentors can benefit from extra preparation for a potentially unfamiliar role as teachers about complex social and structural challenges faced by the populations with which they work. Encouraging mentors to recognize and share their valuable expertise while developing their teaching skills can (1) improve mentors' abilities to work effectively with graduate-level and health science students from multiple disciplines, (2) bolster student learning about important historical social and structural determinants of participants' health, and (3) help students understand the broader context within which organizations serving vulnerable populations operate. As such, in one full-time, community-engaged, interdisciplinary practicum program, Bridging the Gaps-Pittsburgh, part of the multiinstitutional Bridging the Gaps Network, a half-day mentor workshop has been required for two decades for new community mentors to develop their capacity to be community-based teachers of largely graduate-level health science students. Additionally, program staff aim to support mentors and connect them to faculty and community resources in a variety of ways. Our model supports the argument that applied learning by health professional students in community settings can be significantly enhanced through building and supporting the capacity of community mentors to act as recognized teachers in areas of community expertise.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment on the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS, preplanned primary outcome), another fatigue measure, sleep quality, somnolence, pain, disability, and quality of life in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea (OSAH).
In a randomized, double-blind trial (NCT01746342), MS patients with fatigue, poor subjective sleep quality, and OSAH (apnea-hypopnea index of ⩾ 15 events per hour/sleep), but without severe OSAH (apnea-hypopnea index > 30, and 4% oxygen desaturation index > 15 events/hour or severe somnolence), were randomized to fixed CPAP or sham CPAP for 6 months. Outcome assessments were performed at 3 and 6 months.
Of 49 randomized patients, 34 completed the protocol. Among completers, FSS did not improve with CPAP compared to sham at 6 months. Selleck GSK2245840 FSS tended to improve (
= 0.09), and sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale) improved significantly (
= 0.03) at 3 months with CPAP compared to sham, but there were no other improvements with CPAP at either study evaluation.
