Ecological assessment was performed in different thermal springs located in the Ethiopian Rift Valley area Gergedi, Sodere, Halaba, and Gara. We assessed the habitat conditions, physicochemical characteristics, and macroinvertebrate composition at 12 sampling sites in four thermal spring systems. The physicochemical properties of the water samples varied among the sampling stations. Temperature ranged from 38.5 to 90°C among the 12 sites. Dissolved oxygen, which is essential to aquatic ecosystem normal functioning, was not detected at three sampling sites. An average of 109 macroinvertebrates were identified in three sampling campaigns. Relatively higher macroinvertebrate abundance 94 (86.2%) was registered in Gergedi than any other thermal spring sites. The macroinvertebrate abundance was 9 (8.3%) and 6 (5.5%) for the Gara and Sodere thermal springs. No macroinvertebrate communities were observed in all sites of Halaba thermal spring. From all macroinvertebrate groups, 82 (75.2%) were dipterans, 20 (18.4%) Oligochaeta, 5 (4.6%) Gastropoda, and the rest Hemipterans and Coleopterans, which comprises 2 (1.8%) individuals. Chironomidae was the dominant invertebrate taxa at all sites, and when the water temperature exceeds 42°C, it becomes the only taxon in the thermal springs. Macroinvertebrates were absent in thermal springs where the water temperature is 52°C or higher. Other diversity measures were not sensitive enough to discriminate sampling sites regardless of physicochemical variabilities except the richness and abundance. Water temperature, chloride, pH, and phosphate were identified as major determinants of macroinvertebrate richness in the Ethiopian Rift Valley region.Large yellow croaker is an important marine culture species in China. Recently, the large yellow croaker industry is threatened by various disease problems, especially for the white spot disease, which is caused by parasite Cryptocaryon irritans. In the current study, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for C. irritans resistance in two large yellow croaker populations (n = 264 and n = 480, respectively). We identified 15 QTL with explained genetic variance ranging from 1 to 8% in the two populations. One QTL on chromosome 23 was shared by the two populations, and three QTL had been reported in the previous study. We identified a lot of biological pathways associated with C. irritans resistance, such as hormone transport, response to bacterium, apoptotic process, acute inflammatory response to antigenic stimulus, and NF-kappa B signaling pathway. The genes casp8 and traf6 involved in regulatory network for apoptosis and inflammation were identified to be candidate genes for C. irritans resistance. Our results showed the complex polygenic architecture of resistance of large yellow croaker against C. irritans. These results would be helpful for the researches of the molecular mechanism of C. check details irritans resistance and genome-assisted breeding of large yellow croaker.Nanoscience is a multifaceted field which encompasses metal nanoparticles (MNPs) having novel and size-related optical properties significantly different from the bulk level as well as at the atomic level. Amongst noble MNPs, the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have unique properties for metal interaction. Presently, there have been expedite reports which are taken under the review in virtue of sensing the mercury ions in aqueous media. Mercury dissemination in various forms contaminates the ecosystem. Globally mercury is ranked as the most toxic element and an urgent threat to humans since it causes major health issues. Employing MNPs, especially AgNPs for the detection of mercury ions is the economic, handy and apt method in contrast to time-consuming methods that use expensive instrumentations. The review highlights a study of colorimetric and fluorimetric detection of the level of Hg (II) ions in aqueous media selectively with high sensitivity in different courses of conditions using AgNPs synthesized by various approaches. Graphical abstract.Cysteine (Cys) is an essential amino acid in organism, which is transformed from methionine in vivo and participates in protein synthesis and cell redox process. Therefore, the detection of Cys is of great significance. In this work, a novel fluorescent probe, (E)-3-(2-chloroquinolin-3-yl)-1-(pyren-3-yl) prop-2-en-1-one (PAQ) was designed and synthesized to specifically detect Cys. The response mechanism of the reaction between PAQ and Cys was due to the addition reaction of Cys to α,β-unsaturated ketone of PAQ. Interestingly, the addition of Cys induced significant fluorescence intensity enhancement at 462 nm. PAQ exhibited favorable sensing properties towards Cys such as the low limit of detection (0.27 μM) and fast response speed (2 min). In addition, PAQ displayed high selectivity and anti-interference ability toward Cys among various analytes. Notably, PAQ has been successfully used to image exogenous and endogenous Cys in HeLa cells.A new xanthene dye, namely ImX, has been facilely prepared by reaction of 4-(1H-Imidazol-1-yl)benzaldehyde with N, N-diethyl-3-aminophenol in concentrated propionic acid, and then treated by p-chloranil. ImX presents the maximum absorption and emission band centered at 562 nm and 583 nm in water, respectively. Fluorescent spectra investigations demonstrate that ImX shows viscosity-selective fluorescent response and emission enhancement when the solvent viscosity increases from 1.1 cp. (water) to 1248 cp. (98 % glycerol). In addition, this viscosity-selective fluorescence response covers a wide pH range from 2.5 to 10.0. More significantly, ImX demonstrates low cytotoxicity and can be employed as tracer for the detection of Monensin-triggered viscosity enhancement by cell imaging. The 1,3,6,8-pyrenetetrasulfonic acid tetrasodium salt (PTSA) is a pyrene derivative with high fluorescence characteristics and is widely used in fluorescence tracer. This study aims at investigating a simple and fast fluorescence detection method for determining the concentration of ferric ion by using PTSA, which the principle is that the fluorescence quenching of PTSA by ferric ions. Theoretical and experimental methods were adopted to deeply analyze its detection performance and characteristics. The fluorescence quenching phenomena under different pH conditions and the effect of the different interfering metal ions on PTSA/Fe3+ system was studied. The results showed that the PTSA was quite promising for the fluorescence detection of trace ferric ions, and the limit of detection is 9 μg/L. This study is envisioned to provide inspirational insights on trace detection of iron ions, opening new routes for water monitoring use fluorescence properties.
