Among the 1,838 eyes, SVI was noted in 10%, and 2.5% had corneal complications at presentation. The presence of corneal scarring (P < .00001; OR 3.00), corneal ulceration (P < .00001; OR 12.96), low Schirmer values (P= .0084; OR 0.93), cataract (P= .0036; OR 2.4), glaucoma (P= .04; OR 4.09), and age at diagnosis (P= .005; OR 1.02) were independent risk factors for developing SVI. The risk factors for corneal complications were presence of scleritis (P < .0001; OR 8.9) and a diagnosis of secondary SS (P= .009; OR 2.94).

GAPDH undergoes glycation of positively charged residues in diabetic patient's tissues and therefore may change interaction with partners. The influence of GAPDH glycation on interaction with two important partners, α-synuclein and RNA, has been investigated in silico using molecular dynamics simulations and in vitro using surface plasmon resonance measurements. Since positively charged groove including substrate- and NAD+-binding sites is proposed as potential binding site for α-synuclein and RNA, GAPDH was glycated on residues in grooves and randomly distributed over the whole surface. Lysine residues were replaced with negatively charged carboxymethyl lysine as a widespread advanced glycation end product. As results, GAPDH glycation suppressed the interaction with α-synuclein and RNA. Although the modified GAPDH residues participated in binding with α-synuclein, no stable binding site with both glycated forms was observed. Glycation along the whole GAPDH surface completely suppressed interaction with RNA, whereas the alternative possible RNA binding site was identified in case of groove glycation. The findings were supported by direct measurement of the binding affinity. To investigate the clinical outcomes of elephant trunk stent fenestration in patients with acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD).

From January 2009 to December 2019, 271 ATAAD patients were treated in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University. Patients underwent deep hypothermia circulatory arrest with bilateral antegrade cerebral perfusion with total arch replacement and elephant trunk stent fenestration. Patient characteristics, perioperative findings, and follow-up results were analyzed retrospectively.

The average in-hospital mortality rate was 4.1%, the cardiopulmonary bypass time was 160.8 ± 60.4 min, the cross-clamp time was 91.1 ± 24.5 min, and the circulatory arrest time was 22.8 ± 5.5 min. The rate of reoperation for bleeding was 1.5%, and the pericardial mediastinal drainage volume was 312.0 ± 159.2 mL 24 hours after surgery. Follow-up data were available for 95.4% of patients. In two patients, endoleaks developed three years after surgery. The postoperative survival rate was 93.0% at one year, 89.3% at five years, and 81.7% at ten years.

Elephant trunk stent fenestration can simplify reconstruction of the left subclavian artery in ATAAD patients and reduce surgical difficulty. As the early postoperative outcomes and long-term results were satisfactory in our sample, this technique should be promoted for some acute type A aortic dissections.

However, in Iraq, morphological studies showed that P. papatasi is a predominant sand fly species and hypothesised to transmit CL causing Leishmania species including L. major and L. tropica. Few studies have found Leishmania species in sand flies in mixed pools of samples in this country. Accurate identification of sand flies as vectors of Leishmania species is required in Iraq. The current study aims to identify sand fly species, using both morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses, in a region where CL tends to be endemic. Furthermore, molecular phylogenetic analysis has also used to confirm Leishmania species in the sand fly samples collected in 11 villages between Diyala and Sulaymaniyah Provinces. For the first time, we have found L. major in three individual sand flies, one engorged (with fresh blood meal) and two non-engorged (without visible fresh blood meal) P.
