The debate for and against making e-cigarettes available to smokers is largely empirical. We do not know the long-term health effects of vaping and we do not know how smokers will respond to e-cigarettes over time. In addition to these empirical uncertainties, however, there are difficult moral issues to consider. One such issue is that many smokers in some sense choose to smoke and that we arguably have some reason to respect this choice. Though smoking is addictive and though many start young, it does not seem impossible to plan for and implement cessation. I propose that liberal opposition to strict tobacco control based on respect for choice is mitigated when e-cigarettes are available, since they are such a close substitute. Making e-cigarettes available to smokers might therefore not only enable switching in practice, but may make tougher tobacco control more justified. Another moral issue is that making e-cigarettes widely available might induce many people to vape, who would otherwise have neither vaped nor smoked. If this is so, the price of using e-cigarettes to accelerate smoking cessation may be a long-term vaping epidemic. Since vaping is less harmful than smoking, both individuals and society will have less reason to end this epidemic. It may therefore endure longer than the smoking epidemic would otherwise have done. This raises questions around the weighing of reduced harm to current smokers against increased harm to future vapers.Plants can be simultaneously exposed to multiple stresses. The interplay of abiotic and biotic stresses may result in synergistic or antagonistic effects on plant development and health. Temporary drought stress can stimulate plant immunity; however, the molecular mechanism of drought-induced immunity is largely unknown. In this study, we demonstrate that cysteine protease RD21A is required for drought-induced immunity. Temporarily drought-treated wild type Arabidopsis plants become more sensitive to bacterial pathogen associated molecular pattern (PAMP), flg22, for triggering the stomatal closure, which results in increased resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (Pst-DC3000). Knocking out rd21a inhibits the flg22-triggered stomatal closure and compromises the drought-induced immunity. Ubiquitin E3 ligase SINAT4 interacts with RD21A and promotes its degradation in vivo. The overexpression of SINAT4 also consistently compromised the drought-induced immunity to Pst-DC3000. A bacterial type III effector AvrRxo1 interacts with both SINAT4 and RD21A, enhancing SINAT4 activity, promoting the degradation of RD21A in vivo. Therefore, RD21A could be a positive regulator of drought-induced immunity, which can be targeted by pathogen virulence effectors during pathogenesis.This case report described the diagnosis and treatment of a patient with ectopic bone injury due to high pressure electric shock. A 24-years-old male patient suffered from burns that covered 50% of total body surface area, including on limbs and torso, after coming into contact with 10 Kv high-voltage electricity. A repeated Meek micrografting technique (MEEK) was applied for wound healing; skin grafts were cut into micrografts and expanded at a ratio of 14 to cover large areas after burn trauma. After the injury, right elbow redness, fever, pains, and joint movement disorder were reported by the patient, which might be attributed to excessive exercises and acute scarring. However, these symptoms were not treated immediately. Six months after the injury, his right elbow joint showed 90° locking and a restricted 5° movement capacity. X-ray examination revealed a new bone formation at the inner tibia shin. In addition, 3D CT showed the formation of right tibia, the ruler bone, and the skull of the humming bridge. Under general anesthesia, the right elbow joint was released, the medial collateral ligament was repaired, and the hinge external fixator was fixed. Herein, we developed a novel ultrathin bismuthene-based sensing platform for microRNA (miRNA)-specific detection that even discriminates single-base mismatches. The detection limit can reach 60 pM. Excitingly, with the fluorescence quenching mechanism of bismuthene, ground state weakly fluorescent charge transfer is determined via femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. This finding provides a proof-of-concept platform to (i) fundamentally explore the quenching mechanism of bismuthene and (ii) sensitively detect miRNA molecules for early cancer.Several studies have investigated the use of invasive and non-invasive stimulation methods to enhance nerve regeneration, and varying degrees of effectiveness have been reported. However, due to the use of different parameters in these studies, a fair comparison between the effectiveness of invasive and non-invasive stimulation methods is not possible. The present study compared the effectiveness of invasive and non-invasive stimulation using similar parameters. Eighteen Sprague Dawley rats were classified into three groups the iES group stimulated with fully implantable device, the tES group stimulated with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), and the injury group (no stimulation). The iES and tES groups received stimulation for 6 weeks starting immediately after the injury. Motor function was evaluated using the sciatic functional index (SFI) every week. The SFI values increased over time in all groups; faster and superior functional recovery was observed in the iES group than in the tES group.
