Two hundred and fourteen patients diagnosed with Crohn's disease (CD) and 192 with ulcerative colitis (UC) aged from 3 to 18 years, were recruited in seven centres of similar latitude. The seasons were defined as winter (December-February), spring (March-May), summer (June-August), autumn (September-November). The year was also divided depending on insolation threshold (3.0 kWh/m2/day). Patients diagnosed with IBD when the isolation was >3 kWh/m2/day had poorer nutritional status than those diagnosed while insolation was below threshold (lower standardised BMI at diagnosis (-0.81 ([-1.34]-[-0.03]) vs. -0.52 ([-1.15]-0.15); p = 0.0320) and worst flare (-0.93 ([-1.37]-[-0.05]) vs. -0.66 ([-1.23]-0.17); p = 0.0344), with the need for more frequent biological treatment (45.5% vs. 32.7%, p = 0.0100). Patients diagnosed in winter were significantly younger at diagnosis (11.4 vs. 13.0; padj = 0.0180) and first immunosuppressive treatment (11.3 vs. 13.3; padj = 0.0109) than those diagnosed in other seasons. CD patients diagnosed in months with higher insolation spent more days in hospital than those diagnosed in months with lower insolation [4.6 (1.8-11.8) vs. 2.9 (1.3-6.2); p = 0.0482]. CD patients diagnosed in summer had significantly more concomitant diseases. In patients with CD, the occurrence of the worst flare was more frequent in autumn. Furthermore, the season of birth was associated with Pediatric Crohn's Disease Activity Index at worst flare and earlier surgery. In conclusion, several clinical parameters are associated with insolation, the season of diagnosis and season of birth in the clinical course of Crohn's disease.Oxidative stress plays a key role in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke. Coenzyme Q10 has a multi-targeting effect and may protect the brain against ischemic damage. The aim of our study was to evaluate the neuroprotective potential of ubiquinol by its intravenous administration. The study was performed on rats; a stroke was modeled by occlusion of the middle cerebral artery. On days 1 and 4 after ischemia, the neurological deficit and volume of the brain lesion were determined by MRI and TTC staining. Intravenous administration of coenzyme Q10 led to a decrease in rat mortality rate, improvement in neurological status, and decrease in the brain necrosis area in acute and delayed period after cerebral ischemia. A single intravenous administration of ubiquinol led to a limitation of the size of the brain damage for at least four days after ischemia. Thus, intravenous administration of coenzyme Q10 has a persistent neuroprotective potential. This finding suggests a possible therapeutic role of ubiquinol in acute ischemic conditions.Slot-die coatings are advantageous when used for coating large-area flexible devices; in particular, the coating width can be controlled and simultaneous multi-layer coatings can be processed. To date, the effects of ink widening and the coating gap on the coating thickness have only been considered in a few studies. To this end, we developed two mathematical models to accurately estimate the coating width and thickness that consider these two effects. We used root mean square deviation (RMSD) to experimentally verify the developed method. When the coating gap was increased, the coating width increased and the coating thickness decreased. Experimental results showed that the estimated performances of the coating width and thickness models were as high as 98.46% and 95.8%, respectively. We think that the developed models can be useful for determining the coating conditions according to the ink properties to coat a functional layer with user-defined widths and thicknesses in both lab- and industrial-scale roll-to-roll slot-die coating processes.We aimed to develop a novel technology capable of rapidly selecting mutant plant cell lines. Salt resistance was chosen as a rapid selection trait that is easily applicable to protoplast-derived cell colonies. Mesophyll protoplasts were cultured in a medium supplemented with 0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, and 300 mM NaCl. At NaCl concentrations ≥ 100 mM, cell colony formation was strongly inhibited after 4 weeks of culture. Tobacco protoplasts irradiated with 0, 50, 100, 200, and 400 Gy were then cultured to investigate the effects of radiation intensity on cell division. The optimal radiation intensity was 50 Gy. To develop salt-resistant tobacco mutant plants, protoplasts irradiated with 50 Gy were cultured in a medium containing 100 mM NaCl. The efficiency of cell colony formation from these protoplasts was approximately 0.002%. A salt-resistant mutant callus was selected and proliferated in the same medium and then transferred to a shoot inducing medium for adventitious shoot formation. The obtained shoots were then cultured in a medium supplemented with 200 mM NaCl and developed into normal plantlets. This rapid selection technology for generating salt-resistant tobacco mutants will be useful for the development of crop varieties resistant to environmental stresses.We studied how aging affects the ability of Drosophila melanogaster to tolerate various types of stress factors. Data were obtained on the resistance of D. melanogaster to oxidative and genotoxic (separately paraquat, Fe3+, Cu2+, and Zn2+ ions), proteotoxic (hyperthermia, Cd2+ ions), and osmotic (NaCl) stresses, starvation, and infection with the pathological Beauveria bassiana fungus at different ages. In all cases, we observed a strong negative correlation between age and stress tolerance. The largest change in the age-dependent decline in survival occurred under oxidative and osmotic stress. In most experiments, we observed that young Drosophila females have higher stress resistance than males. We checked whether it is possible to accurately assess the biological age of D. melanogaster based on an assessment of stress tolerance. We have proposed a new approach for assessing a biological age of D. WNK-IN-11 inhibitor melanogaster using a two-parameter survival curve model. For the model, we used an algorithm that evaluated the quality of age prediction for different age and gender groups.
