Functional communication training (FCT; Carr & Durand, 1985) is a common function-based treatment in which an alternative form of communication is taught to reduce problem behavior. FCT has been shown to result in substantial reductions of a variety of topographically and functionally different types of problem behavior in children and adults (efficacy). The extent to which these reductions maintain in relevant contexts and result in meaningful changes in the lives of those impacted (effectiveness) is the focus of this paper. This review evaluates the degree to which FCT has been established as an evidence-based practice in psychology (EBPP) according to the definition set out by the American Psychological Association's 2005 Presidential Task Force on Evidence-Based Practice. Our review finds overwhelming evidence in support of FCT as an efficacious treatment but highlights significant limitations in support of its effectiveness. In order to also be recognized as an EBPP, future research on FCT will need to focus more closely on issues related to home, school, and community application, feasibility, consumer satisfaction, and more general and global changes for the individual.Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and predictiveness curves are graphical tools to study the discriminative and predictive power of a continuous-valued marker in a binary outcome. In this paper, a copula-based construction of the joint density of the marker and the outcome is developed for plotting and analyzing both curves. The methodology only requires a copula function, the marginal distribution of the marker, and the prevalence rate for the model to be characterized. The adoption of the Gaussian copula and the customization of the margin for the marker are proposed for such characterization. The computation of both curves is numerically more feasible than methods that attempt to obtain one curve in terms of the other. Estimation is carried out using maximum likelihood and resampling-based methods. Randomized quantile residuals from each conditional distribution are employed for both assessing the adequacy of the model and identifying outliers. The performance of the estimators of both curves and their underlying quantities is evaluated in simulation studies that assume different dependence structures and sample sizes. The methods are illustrated with an analysis of the level of progesterone receptor gene expression for the diagnosis and prediction of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer.
This study aimed to examine the characteristics of psychiatrists and the hospital settings in relation to the first-time diagnoses of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) and depict medical utilization and the detection rate before diagnosis of patients with AN and BN.

We extracted data of individuals with AN or BN, as defined by the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification, from a national health insurance database. Individuals with AN (n = 1,893) or BN (n = 10,542) who were first-time diagnosed by psychiatrists from 2002 to 2013 were included. Individuals with schizophrenia were selected as control groups that were matched with the incident AN and BN cases for sex, age stratum, and year of diagnosis.

AN was more likely to be diagnosed by female psychiatrists. Patients with AN were more frequently diagnosed in medical centers while patients with BN were mostly diagnosed in primary care clinics. Nearly all patients with AN and BN had sought treatment for physical problems but less than half had sought help for mental health problems in the year preceding the diagnosis. Individuals with AN, BN, and schizophrenia were all under-detected by nonpsychiatric medical professionals. Notably, BN was least likely to be recognized by both psychiatrists and other medical professionals.

Our findings underscore the importance of educational programs that are designed to improve the detection and management of eating disorders by medical professionals in Taiwan. Advanced educational programs that target differential diagnosis and the tailored management of different eating disorders should be highlighted among psychiatrists.

There are over 15 types of systemic amyloidosis, each caused by a different precursor protein which promotes amyloid formation and tissue deposition. Amyloidosis can be acquired or hereditary and can affect various organs, including the heart, kidneys, liver, nerves, gastrointestinal tract, lungs, muscles, skin and soft tissues. Symptoms are usually insidious and nonspecific resulting in diagnostic delay. The field of amyloidosis has seen significant improvements over the past decade in diagnostic accuracy, prognosis prediction and management. The advent of mass spectrometry-based shotgun proteomics has revolutionized amyloid typing and has led to the discovery of new amyloid types. Accurate typing of the precursor protein is of paramount importance as the type dictates a specific management approach. In this article, we review each type of systemic amyloidosis to provide the practitioner with practical tools to improve diagnosis and management of these rare disorders.Deriving valid confidence intervals for complex estimators is a challenging task in practice. Estimators of dynamic weighted survival modeling (DWSurv), a method to estimate an optimal dynamic treatment regime of censored outcomes, are asymptotically normal and consistent for their target parameters when at least a subset of the nuisance models is correctly specified. However, their behavior in finite samples and the impact of model misspecification on inferences remain unclear. buy LDC7559 In addition, the estimators' nonregularity may negatively affect the inferences under some specific data generating mechanisms. Our objective was to compare five methods, two asymptotic variance formulas (adjusting or not for the estimation of nuisance parameters) to three bootstrap approaches, to construct confidence intervals for the DWSurv parameters in finite samples. Via simulations, we considered practical scenarios, for example, when some nuisance models are misspecified or when nonregularity is problematic. We also compared the five methods in an application about the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
