Worsening lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are a frequent adverse event following proton beam therapy (PBT) for localized prostate cancer. We investigated the differences in worsening LUTS among patients who received PBT at different times of day.
Among 173 patients who underwent PBT for prostate cancer, 168 patients (median age 68.5 years) completed international prostate symptom score (IPSS) questionnaires and were included. Changes in the IPSS from baseline to the end of PBT were assessed by multiple linear regression analysis for age, National Comprehensive Cancer Network risk classification, androgen deprivation therapy, fractional PBT dose, clinical target volume, severity of IPSS, diabetes, LUTS medication use before PBT, anti-coagulant therapy and radiation time of day (morning (0830-1030), around noon (1031-1430), and late afternoon (1431-1630)).
IPSS total score and IPSS-Quality of Life (QoL) score (12 patients were excluded due to missing IPSS-QoL score) increased from eight to 14.9 (
< 0.0001) and from two to four (
< 0.0001), respectively. Time of day (morning) was the only determinant for worsening LUTS (β = -0.24,
< 0.01), voiding subscore (β = -0.22,
< 0.05) and IPSS-QoL (β = -0.27,
< 0.005), and was a determinant in item four (urgency) (β = -0.28,
< 0.005) with age (β = 0.19,
< 0.05).
Morning PBT for localized prostate cancer significantly ameliorated worsening LUTS and improved QoL compared with treatment around noon or late afternoon. Chronoradiation therapy for localized prostate cancer may be effective and further research to elucidate the underlying mechanism is warranted.49 samples of propolis from different regions in China were collected and analyzed for their chemical compositions, contents of total flavonoids (TFC), total phenolic acid (TPC) and antioxidant activity. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis identified 15 common components, including key marker compounds pinocembrin, 3-O-acetylpinobanksin, galangin, chrysin, benzyl p-coumarate, pinobanksin and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE). Cluster analysis (CA) and correlation coefficients (CC) analysis showed that these propolis could be divided into three distinct groups. Principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple linear regression analysis (MLRA) revealed that the contents of isoferulic acid, caffeic acid, CAPE, 3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid, chrysin and apigenin are closely related to the antioxidant properties of propolis. In addition, eight peak areas decreased after reacting with 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals, indicating that these compounds have antioxidant activity. The results indicate that the grouping and spectrum-effect relationship of Chinese propolis are related to their chemical compositions, and several compounds may serve as a better marker for the antioxidant activity of Chinese propolis than TFC and TPC. The findings may help to develop better methods to evaluate the quality of propolis from different geographic origins.The genus Haematobosca Bezzi, 1907 (Diptera Muscidae) contains haematophagous flies of veterinary importance. A new fly species of this genus was recognised from northern Thailand based on morphological characters and described as Haematobosca aberrans Pont, Duvallet & Changbunjong, 2020. In the present study, the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene was used to confirm the morphological identification of H. aberrans. In addition, landmark-based geometric morphometrics was used to determine sexual dimorphism. The molecular analysis was conducted with 10 COI sequences. The results showed that all sequences were 100% identical. The sequence was not highly similar to reference sequences from GenBank and did not match any identified species from Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD). Phylogenetic analysis clearly differentiated this species from other species within the subfamily Stomoxyinae. For geometric morphometric analysis, a total of 16 wing pictures were analysed using the landmark-based approach. The results showed significant differences in wing shape between males and females, with a cross-validated classification score of 100%. The allometric analysis showed that wing shape has no correlation with size. Therefore, the COI gene is effective in species identification of H. aberrans, and geometric morphometrics is also effective in determining sexual dimorphism.Soils on the world's highest volcanoes in the Atacama region represent some of the harshest ecosystems yet discovered on Earth. The dominant taxon in these soils, the extremophilic yeast Naganishia sp., increased in relative sequence abundance and colony-aterrestrial environments as well.The aim of this study was to explore knowledge, practice of risk and guidelines of the novel corona virus disease (COVID-19) infection among the eye care practitioners and the potential associated factors. A cross-sectional self-administered online survey was distributed via emails and social media networks between 2nd and 18th May 2020 corresponding to the week of the lockdown in Nigeria to eye care practitioners (ECPs). Data for 823 respondents were analyzed. Knowledge and risk practice were categorized as binary outcome and univariate and multivariate linear regression were used to examine the associated factors. The mean score for COVID-19-related knowledge of public health guidelines was high and varied across the ECPs. Ophthalmic Nurses, Ophthalmologists and Optometrists showed higher COVID-19-related knowledge than other ECPs (p less then 0.001), particularly those working in the private sector. More than 50% of ECPs stated they provided essential services during the COVID-19 lockdown via physical consultation, particularly the Ophthalmologists.
