Metal pollution in the Bohai Sea in China has posed a potential risk on marine organisms. In this work, crabs (Portunus trituberculatus) were sampled from four sites, namely a reference (site 3934) and three metal-polluted (sites 6151, 6351, and 3562) sites, located in the Bohai Sea. Metal concentrations in crab gill tissues were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Cu, Zn, and Cd in crab samples from S3562 presented the highest concentrations. Particularly, Cu concentration exceeded the marine biological quality standard II. Cd contents in crab samples from all metal-polluted sites exceeded the marine biological quality standard I. Nuclear magnetic resonance-based metabolomics indicated metal pollution-induced immune stresses in crab samples from all metal-polluted sites. Metal pollution in S6151 and S6351 disturbed energy metabolism through differential pathways. For crab samples from S3562, the metabolic profile suggested that metal pollution mainly induced osmotic stress.This study presents the first report on the concentration of trace elements (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) in the blood and egg fractions of green turtles from Rocas Atoll, a pristine nesting site in NE Brazil. The highest concentrations of all elements were in the blood or shell samples. In order, iron, Zn, Cu, Al and As presented the highest concentrations in all tissues. The nonessential trace elements were below the limit of detection for more than 50% of the yolk (Al, Cd and Pb) and albumen samples (Al, As, Ba, Cd and Pb). This study will serve as a baseline reference for future monitoring of the ecotoxicology of breeding green turtles in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean.Eleven organophosphate esters (OPEs) in air and seawater were investigated from the Northwestern Pacific to the Arctic Ocean. The concentration of Σ11OPEs in air and seawater ranged from 231.56 to 1884.25 pg/m3 and from 8.47 to 143.45 ng/L, respectively. Halogenated OPEs dominated in both two media. Triapine The slight decreasing trend was observed for OPEs in gaseous air, no obvious trend for particle-bound OPEs and in seawater. The net air-seawater exchange flux ranged from -792.68 to 590.29 pg/m2/day. The dry deposition flux ranged from 13.64 to 94.17 ng/m2/day with high value observed at the Bering Strait (64.70 ng/m2/day). The relationship between temperature and OPEs particle-bound fractions suggests that temperature might be a driving factor of OPEs long-range atmospheric transport (LRAT). This research highlighted that OPEs are subject to LRAT from the Asian continent to the northwestern Pacific and Arctic Oceans and demonstrated the "sink" in polar regions of OPEs atmospheric transportation.We examined the relative importance of spatial processes (dispersal-related) and environmental processes (environmental selection-related) in community structure for macrobenthos (including juveniles and adults) and meroplanktonic larvae in the subtidal areas of Daya Bay, China. We found that both macrobenthos and meroplanktonic larvae showed similar spatial patterns, both following the distance-decay relationship. The results of variation partitioning analysis (VPA) showed the roles of both spatial and environmental factors in governing the assembly of both communities, although both explained only a small (slightly larger for spatial factor) fraction of the community variation. We also found that macrobenthos were more affected by spatial processes than meroplanktonic larvae. In addition, we highlight that the mechanisms determining community structure change according to the spatial extent considered.We investigated two sediment cores to understand whether a tsunami in Onagawa Bay, Japan caused environmental changes. The value of δ13C ranged from -21.9‰ to -24.3‰ and of δ15N ranged from 5.1 to 5.9‰. We conclude that the source of the sediment in the present study area was mainly oceanic and not terrestrial. The chlorophyll concentration ranged from 1.8 to 4.0 μg/g ww, and did not vary greatly between surface and bottom layers. We inferred that all layers were deposited after the tsunami. The major phytoplankton taxa in sediments were diatoms from DNA sequencing. The presence of harmful dinoflagellates was minor. The concentrations of several heavy metals decreased slightly after the tsunami. We inferred that heavy metals in sediments were diluted by the tsunami disturbance. The land in Onagawa suffered serious damage, but disturbance of the seabed was much less evident.Religiosity has been positively linked with multiple measures of academic success, but it is unclear whether the "effect" of religiosity on academic outcomes is causal or spurious. One source of heterogeneity that may contribute to a child's level of religiosity and his/her academic success is family background. This paper is the first to use sibling differences to estimate the associations between religiosity on short and long-term academic success. Our analysis yields two main results. First, more religious adolescents earned higher GPAs in high school, even after including family fixed effects. Second, because they earned higher GPAs in high school, more religious adolescents completed more years of education 14 years after their religiosity was measured. Our findings suggest that adolescents' religious commitments influence their schooling in both the short and long term and should be more actively included and theorized as important drivers of educational and economic stratification.The transition into motherhood is often associated with a reduction in women's labor force participation, reinforcing gender employment hierarchies. Our study compares women's employment status and paid work time prior to and following birth among immigrants and native-borns in Australia. We also consider how these outcomes differ by generation status and racial and ethnic background. Australia provides a valuable context to understand these outcomes given its skilled migration policy, racial and ethnic diversity, limited childcare and family leave policies, and high rates of part-time work among mothers. We examine longitudinal data from the Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) for women from 2001 to 2016. We find that migrant women show lower employment levels and commensurate work hours than native-borns prior to childbirth. After childbirth, migrant mothers maintain lower employment levels, but higher work hours than native-born mothers. Overall, we find that relative to native-borns, migrant women typically experience a smaller reduction in employment and work hours following childbirth, but some of this is likely due to their lower starting position prior to childbirth.
