There is considerable interest in the trace element selenium as a possible cancer chemopreventive dietary component, but supplementation trials have not indicated a clear benefit. Selenium is a critical component of selenium-containing proteins, or selenoproteins. Members of this protein family contain selenium in the form of selenocysteine. Selenocysteine is encoded by an in-frame UGA codon recognized as a selenocysteine codon by a regulatory element, the selenocysteine insertion sequence (SECIS), in the 3'-untranslated region of selenoprotein mRNAs. Epidemiological studies have implicated several selenoprotein genes in cancer risk or outcome based on associations between allelic variations and disease risk or mortality. These polymorphisms can be found in or near the SECIS or in the selenoprotein coding sequence. These variations both function to control protein synthesis and impact the efficiency of protein synthesis in response to the levels of available selenium. Thus, an individual's genetic makeup and nutritional intake of selenium may interact to predispose them to acquiring cancer or affect cancer progression to lethality.Light-activated liposomes permit site and time-specific drug delivery to ocular and systemic targets. We combined a light activation technology based on indocyanine green with a hyaluronic acid (HA) coating by synthesizing HA-lipid conjugates. HA is an endogenous vitreal polysaccharide and a potential targeting moiety to cluster of differentiation 44 (CD44)-expressing cells. Light-activated drug release from 100 nm HA-coated liposomes was functional in buffer, plasma, and vitreous samples. The HA-coating improved stability in plasma compared to polyethylene glycol (PEG)-coated liposomes. Liposomal protein coronas on HA- and PEG-coated liposomes after dynamic exposure to undiluted human plasma and porcine vitreous samples were hydrophilic and negatively charged, thicker in plasma (~5 nm hard, ~10 nm soft coronas) than in vitreous (~2 nm hard, ~3 nm soft coronas) samples. Their compositions were dependent on liposome formulation and surface charge in plasma but not in vitreous samples. Compared to the PEG coating, the HA-coated liposomes bound more proteins in vitreous samples and enriched proteins related to collagen interactions, possibly explaining their slightly reduced vitreal mobility. The properties of the most abundant proteins did not correlate with liposome size or charge, but included proteins with surfactant and immune system functions in plasma and vitreous samples. The HA-coated light-activated liposomes are a functional and promising alternative for intravenous and ocular drug delivery. The present study aimed at measuring the levels of legacy and emerging contaminants in fillet samples from four demersal fish caught in two fishing sites from Southern Norway, in order to assess possible implications for food safety. check details Levels of organochlorine compounds (OCs), organophosphate pesticides (OPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybromodiphenyl ethers (PBDE), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in fillet from Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), European plaice (Pleuronectes platessa), lemon sole (Microstomus kitt), and European flounder (Platichthys flesus) specimens. A negligible contamination by all the investigated chemicals was noted in both the fishing sites, as very low levels of OCs, PCBs, and PFASs were noted in a limited number of individuals for each species. Considering the levels of contaminants measured in fillets of the four demersal fish species, negligible risk for human health for Norwegian consumers can be supposed.High-specific-surface-area MgF2 was prepared by microwave-assisted solvothermal synthesis. The influences of the solvent and the magnesium precursors, and the calcination atmospheres, on the nanoparticle sizes and specific surface areas, estimated by X-Ray Powder Diffraction, N2 sorption and TEM analyses, were investigated. Nanocrystallized (~7 nm) magnesium partially hydroxylated fluorides (MgF2-x(OH)x) with significant specific surface areas between 290 and 330 m2∙g-1 were obtained. After activation under gaseous HF, MgF2-x(OH)x catalysts underwent a large decrease of both their surface area and their hydroxide, rates as shown by their 19F and 1H solid-state NMR spectra. Expect for MgF2 prepared from the acetate precursor, an activity of 30-32 mmol/h∙g was obtained which was about 40% higher compared with that of MgF2 prepared using Trifluoroacetate method (21.6 mmol/h∙g).Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) has been demanded for the assessment of appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) in clinical and epidemiological settings. This study aimed to validate BIA equations for predicting ASM in the standing and supine positions; externally to cross-validate the new and published and built-in BIA equations for group and individual predictive accuracy; and to assess the overall agreement between the measured and predicted ASM index as sarcopenia diagnosis. In total, 199 healthy older adults completed the measurements of multifrequency BIA (InBody770 and InBodyS10) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Multiple regression analysis was used to validate the new multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (MF-BIA) prediction equations. Each MF-BIA equation in the standing and supine position developed in the entire group included height2/resistance, sex, and reactance as predictors (R2 = 92.7% and 92.8%, SEE = 1.02 kg and 1.01 kg ASM for the standing and supine MF-BIA). The new MF-BIA equations had a specificity positive predictive value and negative predictive value of 85% or more except for a sensitivity of about 60.0%. The new standing and supine MF-BIA prediction equation are useful for epidemiological and field settings as well as a clinical diagnosis of sarcopenia. Future research is needed to improve the sensitivity of diagnosis of sarcopenia using MF-BIA.We used low-temperature reactions to synthesize different-sized CdSe quantum dots (QDs) capped with fatty-acid and phosphine ligands. From the correlation of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of the synthesized QDs, we observed size-dependent shape anisotropy. In addition, the recorded XRD patterns revealed mixed crystal facets with zinc blende and wurtzite structures in small-sized QDs. Furthermore, from differential absorption (DA) spectra, we extracted the electronic transition energies for different-sized QDs, which were found to be similar to the calculated values of the quantum size levels associated with band mixing of CdSe QDs with a moderate bandgap. We found that the excitonic absorption peaks are increasingly "hidden" with decreasing QD size because of the crystal structure and crystalline quality. The results show good agreement with the obtained diffraction patterns and the estimation errors obtained from the DA spectra.
