In parallel to the laboratory experiments, the microplastics were exposed to real weathering conditions for three-months in a building rooftop located in the city of Porto (Portugal). By analysing the (virgin and aged) microplastic samples periodically through ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and estimating the Carbonyl Index, it was possible to sketch the aging degree evolution through time and identify the most aggressive agents for each polymer regarding the changes in their chemical structure. SEM and XRD measurements allowed to complement the ATR-FTIR results, giving a more complete picture of the effects of each treatment on each polymer and suggesting that ATR-FTIR measurements are not sufficient to correctly evaluate the aging degree of microplastics. The changes observed in the microplastic particles studied support the theory that microplastics in the environment undergo aging and change their characteristics through time, potentially affecting their behavior and intensifying their impacts.

) has been associated with adverse respiratory outcomes in children, few studies have examined PM
constituents with respiratory diseases in children in China.
To investigate the associations of short-term exposure to PM
and its constituents with pediatric emergency room visits (ERVs) for respiratory diseases in Shanghai, China.
We collected daily concentrations of PM
and its constituents in urban Shanghai from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2018. Daily pediatric ERVs for four major respiratory diseases, including upper respiratory tract infection, bronchitis, pneumonia, and asthma, were obtained from 66 hospitals in Shanghai during the same period. Associations of exposure to daily PM
and constituents with respiratory ERVs were estimated using the over-dispersed generalized additive models.
Short-term exposure to PM
and its constituents were associated with increased pediatric ERVs for respiratory diseases. Specifically, an interquartile range increase in the 3-day average PM
level (31μg/m
) was associated with 1.86% (95%CI 0.52, 3.22), 1.53% (95%CI 0.01, 3.08), 1.90% (95%CI 0.30, 3.52), and 2.67% (95%CI 0.70, 4.68) increase of upper respiratory tract infection, bronchitis, pneumonia, and asthma ERVs, respectively. As for PM
constituents, we found organic carbon, ammonium, nitrate, selenium, and zinc were associated with higher risk of respiratory ERVs in the single constituent and the constituent-PM
models.

Using data from the Understanding Society COVID-19 survey, the current study examined the mental health of 18-25-year-olds during the pandemic. Current mental health was measured at six time points using the 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), a validated measure for mental distress. The analytic sample included 880 young adults (292 = males; 588 = females). The trajectory of mental health was modeled from April to November 2020, using demographic information and health behaviors (physical activity, alcohol consumption, and smoking cigarettes) as covariates. Growth curve modeling indicated that alcohol consumption, smoking, being female, having a lower income, and having a pre-existing mental health condition were risk factors for worse mental health during the pandemic. For females, their mental health was lowest in April but gradually improved until September, when it began to decline again. Males, in contrast, had a relatively stable trajectory of mental health across the pandemic. These findings can help inform targeted interventions for at risk groups to minimize the adverse impact of the pandemic on young adults' mental health.Disadvantaged populations have an increased risk of suicide and suicide attempts because of the Covid-19 pandemic. To date, few studies focused on people living in detention, who have a high burden of mental health problems and are exposed to severe control measures. Our study investigated whether there was an increase in suicide attempts in prison. Data were collected in the largest Swiss pre-trial prison (Champ-Dollon) for the pre-pandemic and the pandemic periods. We identified a statistically significant 57%-increase of suicide attempts. Mitigation measures, access to mental health care, and access to vaccination are needed to protect this vulnerable population.A relationship between rumination and suicidal ideation is well-evidenced. A role for thought suppression has also been suggested but under-explored. The present study assessed the relative contribution of rumination and a range of thought control strategies in the understanding of suicidal ideation, within the theoretical framework of the self-regulatory executive function (S-REF) model (Wells & Matthews, 2015). Twenty-four participants who had experienced suicidal ideation in the last two months completed trait-level measures of metacognitive beliefs and momentary sampling measures of thought control strategy use, rumination and suicidal ideation over six days. Maladaptive thought control strategy use (worry and punishment), alongside rumination, predicted suicidal ideation. learn more Adaptive strategies (distraction, social control and reappraisal) emerged as negative predictors. Metacognitive beliefs about the need to control thoughts predicted the use of punishment- but not worry-based thought control strategies. Thought control strategy use is as important in the development of suicidal ideation as rumination.
